PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Helium-3/Deuterium Fusion: Fed by two separate tanks of these fuels, Bia uses an electric discharge to induce helium-3 and deuterium gases into a plasma state that then begins fusion to produce a high energy proton and alpha particle that continually propagates to provide consistent nuclear fusion power. Most kinetic and thermal energy from this fusion process is converted into electricity by a magnetohydrodynamic generator.
  • Inner Magnetic Coils: Using several interlocked rings of Ultrachrome allows it to fulfill mutliple functions within the Bia. The spinning of these charged rings allows it to generate a magnetic containment field to help contain the plasma for the fusion process, while it can absorb some of the residual heat and feed this heat to a miniature turbine to produce act as a secondary power source with enough of a delay between the two processes that it can jumpstart the main fusion reaction if that is abruptly stopped (as in an EMP attack) by transferring that power to the electric discharge device. This is not an instantaneous restart, and may require anywhere from several seconds to several minutes depending on the situation and the extent of the power.
  • Built-in Farraday Cage: Bia's frame of Mirrsteel and laminasteel act as a farraday cage, providing a measure of protection to the reactor from outside electrical interference such as EMP attacks.
  • Manual Restart: If the turbine does not restart the generator, the user can pull a ripcord to ignite a friction spark near the turbine. As the helium and deuterium turn into gas when the generator is disabled and diffuses across the internals, this spark ignites the gases, which in turn restarts the turbine, which in turn can restart the rest of the generator process. It typically takes a minute or two from pulling the ripcord to having the generator back and fully functioning. Pulling the ripcord while the generator is working in its normal mode does nothing, as the gases then are in the form of plasma and contained outside of the turbine area by electromagnetic containment.
  • Automatic Power Regulation: Bia has a small micro-processor which controls how much fuel is pumped into the chamber based on power consumption from outside devices.
  • Safety Measures: Bia has several safety measures built into to it to prevent health concerns to its users, starting with its sturdy construction. Aside from its sturdy case, Ardanium gives the Bia increased durability in the off-chance that it does somehow produce irradiation, such as by using impure fuel. Bia normally should not produce any radiation at all
  • Multiple sizes: The Bia series design can be scaled into different sizes, with small versions being the typical size of a portable computer, medium sizes being the size of a typical backpack, and larger sizes being the size of a large chest.
STRENGTHS
  • Ion/EMP Resistant: Bia provides consistent power even if hit by EMP attacks, due in part to its Farraday cage protection and the secondary jumpstart modes using delayed mechanical means of energy production to restart the reaction.
WEAKNESSES
  • Heat Signature: Bia produces a pretty high heat signature due to the particulars of its reaction that is easily discernible on most sensors, which isn't necessarily true of other fusion generators, some which are cold-ionization fusion reactors which do not produce noticeable amounts of heat.
DESCRIPTION
The Bia series of portable fusion generators is joint project between Lucerne Labs and Lucerne Personal Defense to develop a small, portable power source that could serve as a small powerplant for droids, power armors, crew-served weapons like E-Webs, and other relatively small and mobile devices. Like many generators its size, the Bia uses nuclear fusion to produce its energy. Unlike many of them though, a priority was placed in making the generator quick to restart on its own, due to a particular concern that an ion or EMP weapon could easily disable the generator in combat. The result for was a turn away from traditional cold-ionization fusion generators, which while very efficient, were also more susceptible to those effects. Instead, the Lucerne conglomerate turned to an older, lesser used reaction of the fusion of Helium-3 and Deuterium plasma. Largely fallen out of favor due to the larger amounts of heat it produces, this same heat is utilized by the Bia series to form a secondary energy path to automatically restart the generator if it is hit and overwhelmed by an ion or EMP attack. Aside from making military equipment more resilient against EMP and Ion attacks, the Bia's technology also makes it useful for consistently supplying power to devices on worlds with irregular electromagnetic fields or frequent ion storms, such as Jabiim.
