    • Son of Winter: Born among the snowy peaks of Vandor, Beric is one with the cold. Lower temperatures do not affect him as they do regular humans, and Beric his able to further increase his tolerance with the help of the Force.
    • Frostburn: Beric is a skilled user of the Force, able to use it to augment his physical abilities, as well as healing himself in dire situations. Additionally, Beric is skilled with the ‘Alter Environment’ ability of the force to a high degree, along with other more standard force skills such as telekinesis.
    • Swordsman of Ice: Beric has trained in melee combat since he was old enough to be able to walk and hold a stick. Beric is able to use Form I, Shii-Cho, adeptly, is proficient at Soresu, and is very skilled in Makashi.

    • Half-Epicanthix: Beric’s mother was Epicanthix, meaning that Beric has the inherited traits of having powerful mental shields against the force.

    • Wrath of the Sun: Beric is adjusted to a cold environment, meaning abnormally hot environments will be extra intolerable for Beric. Beric is able to circumvent this somewhat with the use of Alter Environment.
    • Melting Ice: When extremely provoked or face with a grave injustice, Beric’s diplomatic personality can become clouded with righteous rage. When he descends into this state, his powers in the Force become uncontrollable and instinctive; the most obvious is the lowering of temperature as Beric subconsciously uses alter environment on his surroundings.
    • Inexperienced: While Beric has devoted much of his life to studying in the library of Vandor, up until recently he has never traveled off-world, and has no experience with many of the vastly diverse cultures and planets that the galaxy has to offer.

  • Second-Born

Although most don’t know it or pretend to have forgotten about it, Beric was not born as the heir to Frosthall. Born to Jormund Layne, Lord of Frosthall and his wife Eva Zambrano, a Cayremr of the powerful House Zambrano of Panatha. Beric’s birth was that of a miracle; his mother had been previously declared unbarren, and a paramour had been entrusted with the birth of his older brother and heir to Frosthall, Beris Layne. However, Jorumnd’s paramour was actually his childhood love, Ana, and Beris had been born out of love, not out of duty. While Beris’s true origins had been kept from the court, Jormund and Eva’s relationship had been torn, and there was little romance between the two.

Beric’s mother, Eva, had loved Beris as if he was her own child, teaching him court etiquette and preparing him to sit on his father’s throne. Eva even took it upon herself to send Beris to train and live among her own people on Panatha, spending his time there under the tutelage of an old friend. Yet while he was gone, Jormund and Eva’s love began to rekindle with the evidence of his unfaithfulness away. One thing led to another, and Beric’s birth was announced to Frosthall and Vandor as a miracle.

Beric was born, but unlike his older brother, Jormund had resolved to actually have a hand in his son’s upbringing. Beric spent his days with his father, learning of his duty to Frosthall and the people of Vandor. Beric was taught to be compassionate for those less fortunate than him, to care and protect the people of Vandor during its harsh winters. Jormund never assumed that Beric would inherit the throne, but he knew that Beric would be a faithful and capable lieutenant to his older brother, once his time came.

Little did either of them know that Eva was plotting on her own. Born as a lesser member of House Zambrano, Eva had seen her marriage to the ruling house of Vandor as a way to climb politically; but her dreams of ascension had been shattered when a child not of her own blood had been declared heir of Frosthall. But she was not some cowardly washerwoman, to sit and take the fate that had been given to her, so she had concocted her own plan.

Eva had taken control of the raising up of Beris, installing a warrior’s heart and hunger for the bloodshed that was so unlike a member of House Layne. She had purposefully sent him to Panatha to rekindle her relationship with Jormund and conceive a child of her own blood. Orchestrating a series of skirmished between Frosthall and the neighboring Valley Court, she whispered of glory and bloodshed into Beris’s ear, sending out Beris on a raid that was meant to end Valley Court’s military power.

Eva had helped her son plan out the death of the Knight-Captain of Frosthall’s forces, impassioning him to use it to seize Frosthall’s forces and win the glory he deserved. Filled with a lust for war, Eva did not need to do anymore and watched in hidden content as Beris descended onto Valley Court in a rage, massacring its inhabitants and sowing its soil with salt. Beris promised that nothing would ever grow in Valley Court again, and he brought back the head of the Lord of Valley Court as a token of his promise.

Yet, Eva whispered, Beris was not a true Layne yet; not until he wielded the ancestral force-blade of the House, Frostbyte. And so, by Eva’s secret encouragement, Beris demanded that he be given Frostbyte in front of the presence of the full court, minus his little brother, Beric. Jormund relented and gifted the blade to his triumphant son, barely hiding his contempt for the unmerciful beast that his heir had become. And when Beris drew the blade and it rejected him in front of all of Frosthall, Jormund had no reason not to exile the man who had been his heir.

Beris was thrown off-world, to never be spoken of again. Valley Court lay in ruins, and the event forever afterward became known as the Tragedy of Valley Court. And Beric, the second son of Jormund, was raised as the new heir to Frosthall.

    The Lord

With a son of her own blood in place, Eva watched as Beric was instructed by his father in the ways of the force, learning how to construct and wield a lightsaber and control the elements with his mysterious powers. As Beric entered adulthood, both Jormund and Eva had significantly aged, and Beric was bestowed with the title of Castellan of Frosthall, taking on many of the duties to prepare him for his eventual Lordship.

Beric grew up knowing little of his brother, only that he had been the person behind the Tragedy of Valley Court. In time, thoughts of his brother -- a person he had had little to no interaction with, a person who had shown no interest in the little, second-born boy -- faded from his mind as Beric prepared to become Lord of Frosthall.

Surprisingly, his mother was the first to pass. Both Beric and his Father mourned Eva’s death, entombing her in Frosthall with other members of House Layne. But only several months later, Jormund passed as well, and Beric ascended to become the new Lord of Frosthall. Beric strived to make peace with his neighbors, uniting the sparse population of Vandor in harmony to work together against the blizzards and winds of Vandor.

Yet Beric did not feel complete as just Lord of Frosthall. He felt the Force calling him, calling him to something, some sort of purpose. And so, he followed the Force’s callings and ventured into the outer Confederacy, to discover the Knights Obsidian, joining their ranks to become a Knight and serve the Confederacy just as he served Vandor. Yet Beric still felt the call of the Force, and so resolved that he would wait and see where the Force led him.

And wherever it did, he would be prepared for it.

    • Millu Lee Millu Lee : Meeting by chance on Vandor’s snowy slopes, Beric rescued Millu after her ship crashed and took her in, discovering her force sensitivity through more unconventional means. After introducing her into the Knights Obsidian, he took her on as his apprentice.
    • Vynter Vynter : Beric’s older brother, Vynter was originally Beris Layne before his exile from Vandor. Beric was never close with his older brother; he was born while Vynter was spending time off-world training, and was only a child when mysteriously Vynter was exiled from Frosthall. His father and mother never talked about their estranged son, and now Beric is unaware of his brother’s whereabouts.
    • House Zambrano: Beric is a Ninuivr, or Nephew, in the powerful House Zambrano through his mother's blood. Although this relation exists, Beric holds little power in the house, and it is likely that most do not even know of his existence or relation to the House of Sith Emperors.
