Ben Corscifine

NAME: Ben Corscifine [kɔɝ-sɪ-fain]
FACTION: Formerly: The Jedi Order, The Galactic Republic
Currently: Soul-searching
RANK: Padawan
SPECIES: Human
AGE: 20
SEX: Male
HEIGHT: 5’8” (Almost!); Roughly 172cm
WEIGHT: 145 lbs; Roughly 66 kg
EYES: Light Brown
HAIR: Brown
SKIN: White, but not pale. Ben is prone to tan well, given the correct conditions.
FORCE SENSITIVE: Yes

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES (Required: 2 Weaknesses Minimum) :
+ Highly intelligent, logical, and practical. Ben is in possession of a highly functioning mind (for a human, at least)
+ Intuitive ability to read opponents in lightsaber combat. Most of his skill with a saber comes from his physical ability and wit, not his use of The Force.
+ Attractive and well spoken.
+ Fiercely independent
+ One of Ben’s obsessions is with physical fitness, which has pushed him to cultivate an impressive physique. He is very strong (for his size).
- Tendency to overthink. This weakens his sensitivity to—and ability to trust—The Force. This also makes meditation quite difficult.
- Ben has obsessive tendencies. Whether it be attachment to routine, to close friends and companions, or to ideas, Ben has trouble letting go of anything.
- Ben has a weakness for women. Lust is a major issue for him in his relationship with his Jedi training and The Light Side of the Force.
- Definitely not meant to be a pilot.
+/- Ben has a self-confidence that is nearly unshakeable. He fully believes himself to be capable of nearly anything—this is sometimes a gift, but often a curse. The significant exception to this rule is his height, which is an insecurity of his which borders on pathological. Ben sees this as his one imperfection—of which he actually has several.

APPEARANCE:

(Play-by: Zac Efron)

Upon meeting him, most would tend to notice the Ben is a very handsome young man. He has striking features, is well-groomed, and has cultivated an admirable physique. Most noticeable are his penetrating eyes, which strongly suggest a warmth and depth of spirit to most beholders almost immediately. He has strong, thick brows and strong cheekbones.

If you asked Ben to describe himself, however, he would start with the word “short.” At just a hair below 5’8”, Ben is not particularly short for a Human, but he is certainly below average for a male of his species. No one notices Ben’s height more than himself, but his puffing posture betrays his constant desire to appear larger than he is.

Ben’s hair is light brown, but it is prone to looking dirty blonde when in the sun for long periods of time. Ben keeps his hair at a medium length and tends to cut it when it gets too thick on the sides and back. He prefers to have some length on top, which he generally combs up and back (both to keep it out of his face, and to give him a little more height).

Ben has wide shoulders that taper to a much narrower waist, with lean, but noticeably muscular arms and legs. This physique often makes Ben appear taller when viewed from a distance. It isn’t until a person is right next to him that he or she notices that Ben is of below average height.

Ben dresses in simple Jedi Robes, but takes any opportunity to choose attire that shows off his body. His pride manifests itself in small ways, from a slightly more slender robe to a slightly higher-heeled boot. Like most Jedi, Ben keeps his lightsaber—a single-bladed weapon with a green color crystal—on a belt beneath his outer robes.

BIOGRAPHY:

What's Past is Prologue
Ben was born to middle-class armor merchants on Coruscant. His parents are not Force Sensitive—or, if they are, they never cultivated their sensitivity. Ben grew up a very spunky child with a knack for leadership. He was known in his district for the number of “clubs” he would start with his peers. Ben, of course, always played the part of Supreme Chancellor. By the age of 10, Ben had gained a deal of notoriety for his silver tongue and confidence. A shrewd teacher of Ben’s recognized that his abilities may not be simply natural, and suggested that a Jedi friend of his observe the child. It did not take long for this Jedi to recognize Ben as Force Sensitive, and he immediately approached Ben’s parents with the prospect of Ben’s training to become a Jedi.

At first, Ben’s mother and father were reluctant to have their child taken from them to one of the several academies in the galaxy, but the Jedi Master was persuasive. With apprehension, Ben’s parents agreed to allow the Jedi to approach Ben with this information. When told of his gift, Ben was not entirely surprised. He had sensed The Force within him for many years, but had not before had the ability to name the sensation. In the end, it was Ben’s enthusiasm to become a Jedi Knight that sealed the deal with his parents. To this day, Ben does not understand his absolute apathy at leaving his parents, although he often looks on it objectively with a sense of shame.

At the Academy, Ben was placed with several Younglings who had been in training from a much younger age. This did not unnerve Ben. Instead, he took pleasure in being bigger than the other Younglings. He quickly took to his old habits and attempted to assert leadership in his classes, despite his inferior skills. Ben’s Masters took note of this, and were quick to admonish Ben for his pride.

“Pride is a path to the Dark Side,” they all would scold.

Broken holorecords, created for weaker boys, Ben would answer in his mind, unaware that his Masters could hear his thoughts—they were loud and rash enough.

Despite being a problem student, Ben excelled in his studies, being a very quick learner. He soon caught up with many of his peers in dueling and combat tactics, and continued—although careful to be surreptitious—to consider himself special. As Ben grew older, however, his weak foundation began to show in his classes. Ben had a great deal of trouble meditating, he could not feel The Force with the ease and articulation of his peers, and he had developed damning habits of pride and attachment.

As his class of trainees grew older, Ben began to struggle. Some of his peers were becoming the private Padawans of Lothal Masters—some had even become full Jedi Knights themselves—while Ben remained a general student. Ben blamed the Masters, the Code, The Force. It was not until he reached the age of 18 that one of his Masters called a meeting with him to address the issue.

The Master told Ben privately that he would never become a Jedi Knight unless he confronted the problems of which he was in denial. On that day, Ben pleaded with his Master to assign him individually to a Jedi Master, so that he may attempt to ameliorate his failings.

“The Force is strong with you, Corscifine, but you have both feet planted firmly on the path to the Dark Side. No Master can change what happens inside your own mind. The changes you seek must come from within, or they will not come at all.”

With the Jedi Master's warning echoing often in his mind, Ben resolved to seek the Light Side with more ardent devotion and to eschew his arrogance and impatience. On his 18th birthday, Ben accepted that his relationship to The Force was just beginning.

Act I: A Problem Padawan
Ben was placed under the apprenticeship of Corvus Raaf, Grandmaster of the Jedi Order at the time. Under Corvus and several other Order Masters, Ben trained rigorously and acquired skill in Forms I, III, and V lightsaber combat. He also managed to learn skills of telekinesis and meditation, improving in his understanding of the Force through the kind guidance of Master Raaf. Ben also managed to aid in the affairs of the Republic, assisting in the effort to reclaim Manaan from separatists after the Red Dawn crisis by helping further research in the depths of the watery planet.

On a mission to Ilum, Ben and a fellow padawan, Quinn Colson, faced a near death experience when they were separated from the group by a collapse in the ground beneath their feet. After fighting their way through the caves, Ben had acquired both a lightsaber crystal--the most important step in his goal of forging a personal weapon--and a fondness for Quinn. However, Ben immediately began to doubt his romantic feelings for the young woman, guilty at the thought of breaking a vow he had made to avoid attachment.

While unconscious from the fall on Ilum, Ben had a vision of the One Sith invasion of Coruscant, in which he witnessed a robed Sith entering his childhood home with murderous intent. After that moment, he began to consider a plan to return to Coruscant and discover the fate of his parents, with whom he had had no contact since becoming a Jedi. He enlisted Justice Shipping, a smuggling company, to aid him in an attempt to sneak onto the One Sith capital planet. It was through this business endeavor that Ben came to know Jessica Justice, a smuggler and mercenary with with and charm. Ben was immediately infatuated, and their business meeting on Chazwa quickly grew flirtatious. After leaving, Ben was assured both that Jessica was the woman for the Coruscant job and a person with whom he hoped to spend more time.

While with The Order, Ben became close with a Bith named Dune Rhur. He and Dune practiced together often, whether sparring or working on Force powers, and--though they were very different--managed to support one another well in their training and on missions. Together, they helped to defend Lothal from the Darksiders of the First Order, and to aid the Republic in securing a Jedi Temple on the planet of Yutan. Over time, their working relationship grew into a bond of deep friendship. On their final mission together as padawans, they traveled to Nar Shaadda in response to Sith presence in the system, where they worked together in a battle against Sith Knight Ballen-Ist.

Just as Ben was growing comfortable in this position, everything changed. Corvus mysteriously disappeared from the Jedi Order, and Dune was Knighted at nearly the same time. Feeling both sadness and envy growing in him, Ben worried about the future of his training. He finally constructed his lightsaber, tying a cord around the hilt to remind him always of his master--whom he was certain that he loved like an older sister.

Ben could tell that there was Darkness stirring in him, and every moment that he spent in the underground Temple on Lothal exacerbated the passions that were clouding his mind. It did not help either that both the Order and the Republic were in a state of turmoil at the loss of Corvus and the extended aftermath of Red Dawn. With the counsel of his dear friend, Knight Rhur, Ben made the decision to leave Lothal, the Order, and the Republic in a sort of self-imposed exile, to continue his training while exorcising his personal demons.

Of course, he promised to return one day, and to always seek the Light.
