BARUUNGAT

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create another town on Monastery
  • Image Credit: Dmitry Zaviyalov // Artstation (x)
  • Canon: N/A
  • Links: N/A
SETTING INFORMATION
  • City Name: Baruungat
  • Classification: Town
  • Location: Monastery
  • Affiliation: Confederacy of Independent Systems
  • Demographics: 34% Seoularians, 11% Selonian, 11% Arkanian, 10% Atrisians, 9% Kiffar, 6% Echani, 6% Twi'lek,5% Mirialan, 5% Miraluka, 3% Other
  • Wealth: Medium - Baruungat's economy is largely based on agriculture, wool, dairy products, and grain are the town's main export. Second to this the town exports stone to the west to towns such as Leonasa and Vitalii, and ice to the towns east that are exposed to desert-like climates. Ice is also given to the Confederacy which is in turn exported to places like Tatooine. Meat from the herd animals is kept largely for the locals, with a small portion being dried and cured for export to Geonosis and Ryloth. The Confederacy keeps most of the credits with Baruungat receiving the rest.
  • Stability: Medium - Security and law enforcement are primarily handled by the local guards, soldiers from the Confederacy step in to assist when called for. With the town's wealth rooted between agriculture and industry monetary concerns are not high for the denizens. As of late, the installation of a speeder port has increased stability now that the town is more accessible to the healers from the Scared Lotus.
  • Description: Nestled at the base of the Seven Guardians Range, Baruungat is the first sight of civilization for many who descend from its peaks. For others, it's merely another town along the rustic landscape of Naharyar region. Outlying tents from the nomadic tribes who come and go with their herds. Beautifully carved stone buildings, painted in warm reds, and yellows. The sounds of beasts carrying their burdens in and out of the town, while children play about the stone paved streets. The smell of the food cart as it roams the streets selling its goods from house to house, and a tea house that sits facing the main plaza offering its best and warmest. Many people here have snow-burnt faces, a Selonian wearing a blue vest offers its latest catch from a nearby hatchery. A small band in the plaza plays a unique melodic tune. Life is simple here, it's quiet and it offers a much-needed rest for the road weary.
POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Speeder Port - Connects Baruungat and the Naharyar region as a whole to the rest of Monastery. No shuttle port exists as of now, as many within Naharyar are still unsure of outsiders. The Confederacy's local representative Viceroy Tellu is working to try and encourage the region's leaders that the access would be quite beneficial. Thus far, such propositions of change are falling on deaf ears.
  • The Ice Works - The main site for those wishing to work in the ice 'mines.' Iceworks hires seasonally more than necessary to haul as much ice as possible out of the frozen peaks of the Seven Guardians and other ice work haul spots. Outside of the main season, the ice works will keep only the best from the season and have very few veterans from previous seasons.
  • Watchtowers - Found along the walls the watchtowers often are part of the patrol routes for the guards. Almost always the towers are lit making it a little bit easier to navigate back to Baruungat in the dark. Lights closer to the mountains are typically bigger and brighter as to help anyone coming down from the mountain make their way back safely.
  • Granary / Warehouse - Found within the town, used to store grain, foodstuffs and animal products throughout the year. These are also typically guarded and access to them are restricted to farmers and vendors, along with their helpers.
  • Prefect / Firewatch - Dotted around the town, used to help keep the peace and ensure fire safety throughout the small town.
  • Thranta Ranch - Behind the town off to the east, a local rancher breeds and raises thranta. The thranta are then sold to other towns along the mountain base, the thranta are used for travel and are quickly becoming more and more common. [The Thranta were brought by some of the Jedi who imported them from both Bespin and Alderaan].
  • The Frozen Wing Inn - One of two taverns in the town, has two floors the first floor serves food and drink. The second floor has a few rooms which are often rented out to travelers.
  • Whisperwind Fields - Where several cabbage farms are located they sit close to the road near the nomadic tribes, they're often tended to by tribes people who arrive in time for the growing and harvesting season. Keeping a portion of the yields as payment for their work.
  • Crescent Hill Farms - Where several barley and millet fields are located the farms are irrigated from the local stream. The farms are also tended by the nomadic tribes and are also overseen by the locals. Nomadic tribes also gain part of the farm's yield as payment for their work.
  • Snowheart Orchards - Where the pear and persimmons are grown, close to the mountainside and are worked by the locals. Excess harvest is given to the nomadic tribes in exchange for their service to the farms and fields of the area.
  • Emmarq Plains - One of four grassland areas reserved for herding animals and the nomadic tribes. The other three are the Okonora Steppe between the Orchards and the Iceworks, Ingerlita Plains which sits facing the Thranta Ranch adjacent to Whisperwind Fields, and Long-tailed Pastures which surrounds Crescent Hill Farms just before you reach the speeder port.
  • Grettawa Moon Hatchery - Recently built, the Grettawa Moon Hatchery supplies the locals with a source of sustainable fish thanks to recent trading with Maurius. A result of the speeder port that was built by the Confederacy, in return Maurius now gains a new source of food stuffs to help diversify their diet.
  • Brightwood Tavern - The second tavern in Baruungat, it's settled outside the town's walls and is often the first stop for the local and nomadic populations of Baruungat. It boasts three floors, and a basement that is rumored to house a local card game every other night.
  • Brightwood Brewery - Produces a barley-based drink known as Baruunmoon Brew, a hardy ale that now sees shipment beyond the Naharyar region. It sits beside the tavern in which it shares its name.

SECURITY
Low - The town has no shield to speak of, not even a defense turret. Otherwise the local town guards, and the Confederate soliders from a nearby base are the only known forms of security.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Ruled by Khan Megetu Sunghyon, Baruungat is just one of many small towns and villages that dot the Naharyar landscape. Its closes neighbors are Maurius, the Jedi Temple that now sits within the Seven Guardians Range, and a mining village a few kilometers down the road. Like many places on Monastery, it seems like a place lost in time, having its roots drawn from the four hundred years of darkness. Little by little migrants and those seeking refuge came here and settled along the base of the Seven Guardians.

The land in Baruungat was fertile enough for farming, the following have become staples to the town millet, cabbage, barely, onions, radishes, and persimmons. Additionally, herd animals are also a source of food and income. Ice also became an export to the lands that needed it most, and when trade across the galaxy became more and more accessible selling their ice to places such as Tatooine became a key source of revenue. Not just for Baruungat but Naharyar as a whole. Brightmoon Stream is the main source of water in the area that leads into the Grettawa River a few kilometers downstream. Through irrigation, and an aqueduct system water from the stream has been brought into town and fed into the Grettawa Moon Hatchery.

Ancestral religions became the rule for quite some time, at least, until the darkness was gone and technology remerged. Still, there are many who worship the ancestors and shrines can be found here and there throughout Baruungat. Offerings to the gods from an old polytheistic religion are also found at smaller wayshrines. Priests and herbalists still wander the lands roaming from town to town offering their diety's message and as well as small poultices and potions to 'cure' whatever may ail you.

Khan Megetu Sunghyon has been one of the few leaders encouraging more interaction with Viceroy Tellu to help increase the exchange of goods and service. Between the people of Monastery and the Confederacy as a whole. Megetu's power was inherited, the seventh member of the Sunghyon Dynasty his particular line is connected through marriage to the Khaan of Naharyar. While not the seat of power within Naharyar, Baruungat has fastly become the seat of religion. Now more so than ever thanks to the recent construction of a nearby Jedi Temple.
