As Helix's duties took him along with the Sith Order's 3rd Legion, it was clear that further sweeping modernization initiatives were in order. Past casualty rates among the B1H droids indicated that even these machines would not hold up against the unknown challenges of the Firefist cluster (and beyond). As such, all B1H units were given a retirement order, and their machine consciousnesses moved over into newer, sleeker bodies.
The B1-HL was the result. Created in enormous numbers, these droids are nonetheless among the finest Helix has made. Granted unprecedented freedom of thought and action, these machines can rapidly adapt to chaotic battlefield conditions, creating new strategies on the fly. They will make intelligent use of cover or concealment, attempt to flank or ambush unaware enemy forces, and cover their squadmates when relocating under fire. These and many other squad-level basics are well within their capabilities. In addition, they are programmed with knowledge of unarmed combat, vehicle operation, special weapon operation, and even performing shipboard duties. Every B1-HL is innately able to operate any weapon, vehicle, or tool in use with Helix forces.
The B1-HL is also better defended than its predecessor, possessing at least mild resistance to all known weaponry types. Its slimmer profile and more graceful form ensure it is quicker and more difficult to hit as well.
These machines' near-complete freedom of thought has led to a rapidly-emerging martial culture. They have been known to collect battlefield trophies, engage in "hazing" rituals against new squadmates, paint their bodies with various images or mottos, and express their individuality in any number of ways (some more disruptive than others). For the most part, these displays are tolerated, and the appearance of these droids can vary from unit to unit. Disciplinary problems can occasionally emerge, but Helix command considers these annoyances well worth it. Ironically, they are now very near in culture to the Clone Army that some of their more ancient members recall fighting.
