ADVANCED SYSTEMS
Heavy Anti-Capital Ordnance: The Screeching Owl is capable of significant damage to even the heaviest of capital ships with its combination of heavy ion torpedoes, heavy proton torpedoes, and heavy concussion missiles, enabling a wide variety of options to pose a threat to capital ships of the Star Destroyer Class or above, and critical damage to ships below that class if they manage to hit.
Medium Anti-Capital Ordnance: The Screeching Owl is also capable of threatening capital ships of the Star Destroyer or below classes with its combination of relatively fast medium ion torpedoes, medium proton torpedoes, and medium concussion missiles which can deal significant damage to vessels of that size, and moderate damage to vessels above SD size. It is also capable of utilizing its sole heavy blaster cannon to threaten typical ships of cruiser tier or below.
Remote Detonation: The Screeching Owl is capable of remotely detonating its ordnance to force glancing damage in the event of likely interception or to deny certain approach vectors to enemies.
STRENGTHS
No Capital Ship Is Safe The Screeching Owl is designed to be able to threaten every tier of capital ship, from the smallest corvette to the largest ships the galaxy has known when deployed in large enough numbers. Wise opponents would do well to keep a hefty amount of fighters or interceptors in reserve and position their ships carefully unless they are willing to risk
disaster.
SAWACs Synchronization: It is specially designed to work in conjunction with the Argus SAWACs craft to help with target identification, communications, and general combat guidance.
WEAKNESSES
No Shields, Thin Armor Due to its doctrinal uses, cost, and weight restrictions, the Screeching Owl has only thin armor and no shields. It is designed to rely on its maneuverability and speed for survival, along with a fighter or interceptor escort.
Vulnerable to Interceptors: Although equipped with decent speed and maneuverability for carrying such a large amount of ordinance, the thin armor of the Screeching Owl is not suited to take sustained fire, and while it can keep pace with the average fighter, it is vulnerable to interceptors with higher than average speed and maneuverability. A wise commander will thus make sure to assign them enough of a fighter or interceptor escort to ward off such attacks or make them extremely costly.
Not Elite: The Screeching Owl, while capable, is designed to be relatively economical to field in decent numbers, as such it is inherently not an “elite” bomber, and thus must shirk on things like having the best engines, manueveruing thrusters, and defenses.
DESCRIPTION
The AVSF-4 “Screeching Owl” is the dedicated bomber variant of the AVSF-1 “Strike Eagle”, and is in many ways the heavier variant of its ground-based cousin the AVSF-2 “War Hawk”. It is extremely well armed for a vessel of its size, carrying a plethora of heavy and medium torpedoes and concussion missiles to threaten capital ships or space stations many times its size or, in a pinch in the atmosphere, heavily fortified structures and installations that even the War Hawk cannot handle. It is surprisingly maneuverable and speedy for the amount of ordnance carries and a bomber of its class, which is good because that is its primary defense against enemy interceptors and fighters since it had to be stripped of most of its defensive capabilities in order to avoid being a lumbering target.
Tactically, the Screeching Owl fills the role of a relatively speedy heavy bomber that poses a severe threat to smaller enemy capital ships alone or in small groups, and the same to larger enemy vessels in larger groups or squadrons, which it is able to assemble in thanks to its relatively low cost of production. One should open a bombing run on a capital ship first with the heavy or medium ion torpedoes, and then once its shields are down, finish it off with volleys of concussions missiles or proton torpedoes depending on how large and swift one’s opponent is, concussion missiles being a bit more fast than proton torpedoes in general at the cost of lower damage. It can also use its heavy blaster cannon in a pinch, although such is recommended only against lighter vessels in groups since it is only related to reliably penetrate up to cruiser tier armor.
Strategically, the Screeching Owl provides the “punch” of a carrier based task force, enabling such carriers to threaten ships of the line on an equal footing from a long distance. Although having enough maneuverability and speed to dodge rather than tank most capital anti-starfighter defenses and make it not trivial for average fighters to hunt them down, they are very vulnerable to enemy interceptors and fighters with a higher speed than them. Thus, it is recommended that one ensure one has space superiority by assigning enough fighters or interceptors as escorts to Screeching Owl squadrons, preferably at a 2:1 basis, to ensure that they are adequately protected long enough to deliver their devastating payloads.
