STRENGTHS
  • Close-Quarters Leathality - The AT-B12 was designed to be utilized at point-blank to short range, where the scatter pattern increases hit probability, even against multiple targets. This makes the weapon great for room-to-room clearing, boarding actions, ship corridors, or ambushes.
  • Area-Effect & Multiple-Target Capability - Because the blaster bolt emitted from this weapon spreads, a single shot has the potential to injure multiple adversaries in a cluster - examples include riot suppression, crowd control, and close-quarters firefights.
  • Relatively Compact - The design of this weapon is more like a blaster rifle or heavy blaster pistol than a heavy repeating blaster, making it easier to carry and maneuver than heavier weapons or crew-served guns.
  • Intimidation & Psychological Impact - With a distinctive sound, light-blast spread, and destructive punch at close range, it makes it useful for suppression, control, or instilling fear in an enemy where ending a fight before it can begin is preferred.
WEAKNESSES
  • Poor Long-Range Performance - As with most scatterblasters, the AT-B12 is not meant for long-range engagements, as the blaster bolts quickly lose coherence or spread too far. When used beyond its maximum range, the weapon becomes ineffective, making use of the weapon extremely situational.
  • Less Accurate - The scatter of the blaster bolt means that you sacrifice precision beyond close range, and for a single target at medium distance, a regular blaster rifle remains superior.
  • High Power Consumption - Due to the energy required to produce and emit a blaster bolt, the power pack and tibanna gas cannister are known to be drained faster - making sustained firefights or long engagements inefficient.
  • Overheating and Maintenance Needs - Repeated use has the potential of causing overheating despite the inclusion of cooling systems to assist in mitigating this issue. However, without sufficient time to allow for cooling, the weapon can overheat - causing jams, failures such as misfires, or even damage to the user.
  • Situational Niche - The AT-B12 is easily outclassed by standard blaster rifles or heavy blasters when it comes to mid-range to long-range fights, making the mass deployment of this weapon unlikely, as it excels in specific situations.
DESCRIPTION
The AT-B12 is a compact, close-quarters scatterblaster designed by Aether Technologies for use in confined environments such as starships, orbital stations, and dense urban structures. Unlike traditional blaster rifles, the AT-B12 channels its plasma discharge through a specialized Model 70 Spread Barrel, producing a tightly grouped cluster of miniature blaster bolts. At short range, these sub-bolts spread just enough to dramatically increase hit probability, striking multiple points on a single target or affecting several clustered opponents at once. The design and weapon's construction emphasizes maneuverability - a shortened barrel, reinforced foregrip, and lightweight composite frame make it ideal for boarding teams, security units, and soldiers specializing in room-to-room clearance. Aether Technologies also ensured that the AT-B12 was designed to include an optional "tight-beam" mode, allowing the user to bypass the scatter emitter for a more concentrated shot when precision is needed - however, this does not increase the effective range of the weapon.

While devastating up close, the scatter pattern loses coherence rapidly. Beyond a few dozen meters, the sub-bolts disperse into harmless sparks, giving the AT-B12 a very limited engagement radius. This shortened effective range is paired with high energy consumption as each pull of the trigger consumes significantly more power than a standard blaster bolt, meaning operators must carry extra power cells for extended operations. The design of this weapon also includes a stun mode - a common feature across many Blasters throughout the Galaxy - which allows it to be used in riot control or suppression by providing a less-than-lethal means to disperse a crowd. Extended use of the weapon in a prolonged situation is known to cause overheating in the barrel and internal components, which, without proper time to cool, can cause jams, failures such as misfires, and even damage to the user. Much like the AT-XT5, the design of the AT-B12 includes access panels that allow the rapid inspection of the internal components, making maintenance and cleaning of the weapon easier.

Despite these drawbacks, the AT-B12 excels at what it was built for - overwhelming force in confined spaces. Its distinctive, concussive blast signature and wide spread impact make it a favorite among boarding crews, station security, and criminal enforcers who prefer an intimidating presence. Within the close confines of corridors, hatchways, and alleyways, few weapons outperform the brutal efficiency of the Ather Technologies AT-B12 Scatterblaster.
