OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
The "Hellfire" was designed by the engineers in the research and development department of the Starship Weapons Division at ATech Manufacturing. The concept was to create a mounted laser cannon for starfighters in the field of battle. Many designs and ideas were debated, until they settled on the cannon that is officially named the AT.3 / "Hellfire" Laser Cannon. Several metals and alloys were researched, but with the idea of an automatic-style cannon, they wanted alloys that were both durable and able to sustain the rising heated temperatures on the barrel. Titanium was voted for its strength and durability, whilst dallorian alloy for its ability to prevent the barrel from overheating. Each cannon has a small internal cooling system, which is filled with a gel-like fluid, that flows inside glass tubes along the inside of the cannon, aiding in the prevention of the barrel overheating, or worst, melt.
The cannons have been designed to be attached to a swivel system, but it's not a factory standard attachment. The swivel system is optional. The swivel system works in a unique fashion, unlike the traditional three-hundred-thirty-six-degree radius. This system allows the cannon to fire forward and can be swiveled to fire behind the starfighter. The latter is more of a defensive mechanism for the starfighter against enemy fighters behind them.
The cannon has two main strengths, its rate of fire and ammunition capacity. The "Hellfire's" rate of fire is automatic, or continuous, as long as the pilot is pressing the button. It fires a volley of shots to that of the ground-based weapon, the mini-gun; without the "spin up cycle". Its ammunition capacity is extremely large, to accommodate the rate of fire. The cannon comes with two main weaknesses as well, the recoil and damage output. The recoil is extreme due to the rate of fire, thus causing the accuracy of the cannon to suffer. There is no tracking or targeting system with the "Hellfire" because of the rate of fire, so its best utilized in close quarters. The damage output is low compared to most weapons of this class, but the rate of fire happily makes up the difference.
