GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Asella
  • Origins: Asella is a bio-engineered plant that is grown in the waters of Ando, specifically around and in the Trawl.
  • Other Locations: Asella is able to be grown in a wide variety of aquatic settings, but due to its synthetic nature it is currently only found on the Trawl.
  • Classification: Bio-Engineered Submerged Aquatic Plant
  • Average Growth Cycle: The average growth cycle from spore to standard harvestable maturity is around three galactic standard months. After this period is reached, Asella will continue to grow, but tests are still being conducted to see how long this period of extended growth will last. 'Natural' life span is estimated to be around five years due to genetic structure and limited experimentation.
  • Viability: Asella thrives in cool, nutrient water of anywhere between five and twenty-two degrees standard, usually in a depth of anywhere from two to one-hundred-and-fifty meters deep. Due to its bio-egnineered structure, it is able to survive and thrive in water of varying acidity and salinity.
  • Description: The Asella plant is a bio-egineered submerged aquatic plant created by Ophidian Consolidated and grown in the waters of Ando, both in and around the Trawl. The plant is designed to be used as a supplemental medical substance, from which Asellic Fluid can be produced for a variety of health and medical purposes and uses. Thus, the main use and environment of Asella plants are artificial farms located inside the ocean rig, heavily monitored to prevent the theft of any of the valuable bio-property. It's structure is that of a bouyant stalk and large leaves designed to both filter the water around it for nutrients, and to absorb red-light to under go photosynthesis. As it is able to absorb nutrients from the waters around it, the roots of the plant are instead meant only to give the plant a firm grasping on the ocean floor below it.

When farmed, the Asella plant is able to grow to a standard height of about eight meters, after which it is harvested and used to make Asellic fluid. The plant reproduces through the spreading of spores, which can multiply and form base cell structures from which the plant exponentially grows. This process, from spore to fully-mature plant, takes about three standard months in a carefully controlled environment and longer when not cultivated. Outside of its medicinal use, the Asella plant is virtually worthless -- as it is bio-engineered, it is not a part of the natural food chain and has been confirmed to be toxic to humans and other species with similar digestive systems. But when harvested and turned into Asellic fluid, it becomes a lucrative plant that can be used for a wide variety of medical purposes.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Average Height: 8 meters
  • Average Length: 2 meters
  • Color: The bottom stalk of the Asella is a darker green, while the leaves and new growth take on a more jade-green coloring.
  • Nutritional Value: Minimum | The plant is not a part of any natural food-chain and is toxic
  • Toxicity: Ingested, the plant can be seriously toxic to humans and other species with similar digestive systems. Depending on the species, this toxicity ranges from mild to potentially lethal, and there has not been a developed cure for Asella poisoning.
  • Other Effects: Raw Asella leaves can be used as a soothing salve that can help soothe minor burns and prevent infections of shallow cuts and incisions.
  • Distinctions: What makes Asella distinct is primarily the fact that it is a bio-engineered organism, created and constructed genetically in a laboratory. In addition to that, the medicinal properties of raw Asella as well as its products
STRENGTHS
  • Medicinal: The medicinal capabilities of the Asella plant and its products make it an extremely valuable organism in the health industry.
  • Made for Cultivation: Designed in a lab and as a bio-engineered organism, the Asella plant is created to be optimized for cultivation with fast growing cycles and the ability to adapt to a large range of water salinity and acidivity.
WEAKNESSES
  • Small Gene Pool: Bio-engineered and only grown in relatively small amounts on Ando, the small gene pool that the Asella is developed from can lead to a wide variety of complications.
  • Toxicity: The Asella plant has no known nutritional value and is toxic to humans and beings with similar digestive systems.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Asella plant is one of the many bio-engineered creations of Ophidian Consolidated, the Ando-based research, development, and limited manufacturer-shipbuilding company that operates under the umbrella of Roble Manufacturing. The plant was designed by genetic specialists to be used as medicinal competition to the widely used and monopolized bacta industry, and indeed the plant and its products have a wide variety of medicinal value; its main derivate, Asellic Fluid, is used as a supplement to synthetic bacta production to produce a product deemed as 'Green Bacta,' a substance competitive enough with the original product that it is a viable replacement.

The Asella plant was not a species that came to fruition after only a few months of tinkering, that is to be sure. Over a decade was put into the research and development of the Asella in laboratories across the galaxy, with the final stages of testing and early production being carried out on the Trawl. It's destined to overhaul the current medical and pharmaceutical industry and deliver on its promise -- accessible treatment that is not subject to the politics and whims of a single region.
