It felt as if this battle had lasted hours.

Cardinal stood across from his double, staring at the beast-like eyes. His muscles ached as if they’d been pressed under a machine for hours and each movement was a new pain. Cardinal could feel it deep in his chest. This pain that was unlike any other that flowed through his body. It was not a hot rush or stinging cut, it was a void in his very soul that left a cold chill even in the warmest of days. How many years had it been since he felt that soul-breaking feeling? Ten, twenty, a hundred?

A blood curdling laugh echoed out. It danced around Cardinal until finally the Dominus prime lifted his head to see that wild beast laughing with a sickening smile on his face. “Is the cost of immortality too much?” He demanded? His hand closing into a tight fist, practically dripping with the ire of the Dark Side. Cardinal’s blade was planted into the ground, allowing the man a moment to relieve his weary body. How long had they been here?

I am not immortal, beast. Immortality is a sin against the very nature of The Force!” Cardinal called out, his eyes burning with a hatred that shook the foundations of the prison that surrounded him.

You call your blessing a curse! Your weakness is disgusting! Once you had the chance to be a powerful being, a Sith Lord to rival all others.” True. Cardinal could have accepted the Dark Side of the Force in its entirety. Allowing it to sweep him away in its icy embrace. No, The Force within him was calm and balanced. Neither a perversion of the Dark Side or a semblance of the Light. He could not quite explain it himself, but it was the reality he accepted and wanted. The Dark Side had destroyed all the man had ever known, to turn to it now would have been the same as destroying the last of his own humanity.

Death will come to me before I give in to the beast within. You will not have me.” He swore, releasing the grip he held over his Greatsword. His twin snarled, “Pick it up!” Now it became clear. The world around him began to shimmer, revealing itself for the falsity that it was. Holding his arms out, Cardinal slowly walked towards the Sith, with an almost welcoming expression.

I will kill you!” He charged forward, his lightsaber in hand. The crimson blade seemed to almost cry out as it flew through the air, aimed at Cardinal’s neck. The Dominus lips cracked into a smile just as the lightsaber slammed into his neck.

Everything went black.

When Cardinal’s eyes opened once again he stood in the middle of the jungle. Darkness had fallen over the lands but he knew exactly where he was. Glancing back behind him he could still see the village that he and Madalena had just left…or left some hours ago. How long had he been trapped in that vision? He looked to his side to see his fellow knight. She stood silently, eyes closed as her mind was trapped within her own being. “Knight Antares…” He muttered, walking over to her and narrowing his eyes. Whoever had done this was going to pay a truly large price.

"You…" Madalena whispered as she looked at the other woman, the woman from her nightmares. Now that she was not exactly inside a nightmare, but more trapped in illusions caused by someone else, she could actually take a look at her. A focused look. She stepped back in shock as she realized though; the two were exactly the same in appearance.

The other woman opened her mouth to speak, but inside of that mouth Madalena could see nothing but Darkness; black, never ending, never beginning. Not just the lack of light of a moonless night; but Darkness. Full and complete. The other woman moved her hand up to her throat, tapping on it. She would not be speaking.

"Why do you hound my dreams?!" Madalena demanded, taking a step forward now, "why do you not let me sleep?!"

The woman just stared at her, unable to answer, or perhaps, Madalena thought, unwilling. But instead of speaking, the woman shook her head again, before forming a fist in her other hand, and punching herself over the heart. Not hard enough to cause injury, but to signal something.

But what was she signaling?

The woman then pulled a knife from her pocket. Madalena recognized the knife. Sure, almost anyone had Czerka knives, but the markings on the hilt, she recognized those as her own. The knife was hers. What was the woman doing with it?

She sliced her arm with the vein. The blood came, thick and strong.

Madalena understood.

Closing the distance between the two of them, she held the arm up to her mouth, and began to drink the blood that was slowly flowing out of it. The memories began to pour into her. What happened centuries ago, what happened years ago, what happened months ago… What happened when she was the woman. And a deep and harsh comprehension descended on Madalena.

The woman gently pulled her arm back and whispered. "Forget…"

Madalena's eyes snapped open. She was standing in the jungle whereshe and the Dominus had been looking for… For droids? For…

"Dominus?" she asked, confused, "when did it turn dark?"

When Madalena’s eyes snapped open, Cardinal exhaled softly once Madalena’s eyes finally came open. There was some worry that these visions were more than what they were, but it seemed neither Cardinal nor Madalena were injured. The Dominus searched the woman for a moment before nodding. “We got caught in some type of illusion. Stay close to me and close your mind to The Force.” He ordered, before turning back towards the path before them. Cardinal’s hand stayed on his Greatsword as they moved forward, deeper into the jungle. This time Cardinal kept his mind closed, using The Force to create a mental barrier to protect him from any more illusions.

The path that they followed soon became littered with more spare parts. Pieces of battledroids were scattered all over the dirt path and some had even been sent into the nearby trees. “What the hell did this?” In the next minute a loud roar echoed out and then another to match it.

Eyes going wide, Cardinal drew his Greatsword and held it evenly in his hands. “Prepare yourself!” He called out. He could sense the dark side of the Force, moving around this forest in a hellish manner. He could sense it’s hunger, it’s anger, it’s fear. It almost threatened to swallow him whole, the seemingly endless amount of emotion that swarmed through the area. This flow of the dark side would appear deliberate and force to Cardinal and Madalena. It was obvious this was no simple nexus of the Force, something carried the Dark Side with a powerful anger. The trees surrounding them gave a soft shimmer, the leaves quaking from some unseen being. There were two of them, circling the two like predators spying their prey.
Cardinal stepped back, eyeing the shimmering trees closely. “Back to back, now.” He reached out with the Force and immediately a flash went through his mind. He saw the scene again, standing over Madalena’s dead body as everything around them came crashing down. Destruction.

Cardinal retreated back into his own mind and glanced back to Madalena speaking softly. “Have you ever fought a Smoke Demon before?” He asked with a rather exhausted tone.

You need to protect your mind. If they capture you then they will be able to absorb your body and there won’t be anything left.” He explained.
Cardinal watched as the two streams of mist thickened into a black fog. These two clouds of fog would swirl around Madalena and Cardinal with a deadly intent before each one would hover a few meters away from the Knight’s. In unison the two clouds would assault Cardinal and Madalena’s minds, attempted to break through their mental defenses.

"The Aeshma?" Madalena murmured under her breath, "I don't know if the droid destruction is their doing or not. But the illusions, the dreams… It feels very similar to what I went through with Dianah Vi'Dreya when we did a mission a few months back. If it's not them, then it's someone that operates similarly."

The path they were taking looked like a droid massacre. Why go through the trouble of destroying droids like that? Taking their CPU core out would have just turned them off. But whoever had done so, they didn't want to just turn them off. They didn't want to take whatever information they were maybe carrying on their drives. They just wanted… Did they want to send a message? Was that it?

Every muscle in her body tensed as the roar was heard. She could feel the lure of the Darkside around them, swirling, both threatening and inviting at the same time. She wanted to lick it just as much as she wanted to stab it with one of her knives. Thankfully, the Dominus had more sense about him, his order sending Madalena into action. She took the position, her lightsabers ignited, her knives in the air, and the sword still strapped to her back.

"Smoke demon?" she asked. No. She'd never even heard about those. A demon she could fight. Demons were big ugly creatures that people tended to get confused with creatures out of stories, when usually it was really the term daemon was that was misleading. Sometimes all a demon needed was a hug and a stern talking to. When that failed, you stabbed them repeatedly. But if it was made out of smoke…

Her mental defenses instantly shot up at the explanation though. She'd had a lot of training in this. She knew it. Her mind was a fortress and these smoke uglies weren't gonna get through. Which begged the question, "how do we kill them?"

A scream erupted from her throat as the one on her side launched forward, attacking the mental fortress she'd constructed within her mind. The fight was not going to be easy.

Cardinal's mental defense held strong against the assault of the Smoke Demon. Planting the tip of his sword into the ground he briefly closed his eyes, keeping his focus on the barrier he had errected to shield his mind. These creatures were not like most others in the galaxy. They were particularly difficult to kill and were impervious to pain. The Dominus felt the Smoke Demon's attack waver and he brought his sword to bare once again. A bead of sweat fell down the man's temple as he called back to Madalena. "Are you ok?!" He could not risk turning to check on the Knight, he had to keep his eyes fixed on the enemy at hand. Though, he could offer some explanation. "Your lightsabers will hurt them a lot more than my sword will." He told her. "They are a manifestation of the Dark Side, usually only a powerful Sith Lord can-" His words were cut off as the Smoke Demon reached through the Force, slamming into Cardinal's mental wall once again. The pain that this assault brought was infuriating. It felt as if someone was dragging rusted nails along the man's brain. Again Cardinal did all he could to defend from the attack. "Antares, I can't kill these things with my weapon. We'll need to use your lightsabers. I'll create a distraction, you have to destroy them."

There was nothing else to be said. Cardinal charged forward, keeping his eyes fixed on the beast that was before him. Although it had been nothing more than a cloud of mist, as Cardinal grew closer the smoke demon began to shift and mold itself into a corporal being. Still clouded in smoke and darkness, the demon's green eyes looked down at the charging Dominus. It's hazy arms formed into a mighty fist that was aimed towards Cardinal.

The Dominus brought his greatsword up, using it's face to defend against the smoke demon's fist. It felt as if the man had been hit by a speeder, the fist was far larger than it appeared and carried a hellish weight with it.

Damned thing is strong. Cardinal mused, grunting as he felt his feet digging into the ground from the smoke demon's fist. Cardinal pushed, using The Force to bring his own strength on par with the smoke demon. The creature was pushed back, letting out a wild screech as the Dominus fought back. Cardinal turned his blade at the last moment, leaping forward and slicing through the creature's chest. The smoke demon let out a loud shriek as it scattered back into a mist of smoke and shadows. They would have some time before it could gather itself, but Cardinal knew it would not be for long. He looked to Madalena, hoping she was handling her own demon.

Madalena was not used to screaming. Pain was something that came to her like second nature; but it was the physical pain that she was accustomed to, that she felt at home with. Having her mind attacked felt nothing like that. Pain that came from the inside of her mind and spread to her very finger tips was so different. Another scream erupted from her as she blocked the next incoming attack, nodding miserably as the Dominus asked her if she was okay, not realizing that since they were back to back, he had no way of seeing her answer.

Through the pain, she managed. Managed to listen to the Dominus. The answer was lightsabers, not swords. Immediately, her dozen Czerka knives slid back under her clothes. There was no point in wasting energies on them if they would simply cut through the air and nothing else. It felt almost like being naked; she was so used to fighting with all of them up in the air, but this would not help now.

She could feel the coldness in her back as the Dominus charged forward. She wanted to scream for him to wait, but there was no time. A quick glance was enough to show that he was already engaged with the smoke demon that was in front of him. Madalena looked back at the one that was in front of her, this time managing not to scream as her mind was assaulted again. The Sithling knew that she could not keep this up forever; sooner or later, her mental shields would break.

Charging forward with her lightsabers, she wasted little time in waiting; the smoke demon that she had to deal with was beginning to form into something more corporal as well, and she slashed at it with both of her lightsabers.

It was not enough to kill it; but it was enough to tear the form apart, the smoke demon now needing more time to recollect itself.

At least it didn't respond to the lightsabers like air. Turning around, Madalena ran to where the Dominus was. "Take one!" she screamed as she turned her lightsaber off and tossed the hilt at him, "no stranger protection on the hilt, use it freely!"

The smoke demon had formed into his corporal form again. Madalena tried to charge at him, but a tendril of smoke sent her flying backwards. Where the krak did she need to hit it in order to get rid of it?!

Cardinal stepped back, planting his greatsword into the ground as Madalena moved to support him. It took a lot of strength to fight with his blade and it was best to rest it whenever possible. Yet as he exhaled he could see the smoke demon was quickly forming itself back into a physical shape. He was just about to take his hilt once again when Madalena called out to him. His hand shot out, using The Force to call the blade to him.

Catching it in his hand Cardinal cursed softly as he activated the blade. He glanced down at the glow it gave off and exhaled briefly. It had been a long time since he had used a lightsaber and he was not in much of a rush to return to them. Of course, if it was between that and dying he would happily take the blade. Cardinal reversed his hold on the blade, holding it to the side as it trailed out behind him. The Dominus charged forward, bringing his body lower to the planet's surface as he moved to carve the demon in two. Although the best was little more than a cloud of mist working to reform itself, a large smoke-covered fist shot out at Cardinal to ward off his attack. Cardinal's blade swept forward, carving through the hand and he leaving it a harmless trail of smoke.

He brought his arm back to slice the demon again but it flowed freely around his blade, dodging the lightsaber with a mad rush to stay alive.

The smoke Demon abandoned it's attempt to reform. It must have saw that was an entirely fruitless effort. Instead it's mental attack rushed Cardinal once again, letting out a painfully loud screeching noise that caused the Dominus to falter. Seeing this as an opportunity the mist rushed into the Dominus, slamming at his chest with it's mass and throwing Cardinal from his feet. Cardinal slammed back into the ground with a hard thud. The attack had winded him more than anything but it had also destroyed the Dominus' barrier to Madalena. The smoke demon realized this and charged for the woman wildly. Holding his lightsaber out to the side Cardinal's hand reached out, gripping the being with a barrier of The Force. Every piece of the Smoke Demon was held by an invisible hand, causing it to give off a faint shimmer, yet otherwise restricting it's movement. "Antares, strike it!" He called out, unable to move for fear of breaking his hold.

"If you can strike it before it reforms it will destroy it!" He yelled.

They were both on the ground. Madalena looked up at the smoke demon she was facing and bit down, forcing herself to rise from the ground. She had not even realized that the Dominus had put up a barrier on her, but boy did she notice it now that it was gone.

The smoke demon launched at her and her eyes widened, her hand fumbling with the lightsaber as she tried to aim right and true, but before the demon actually took her over and made her realize how wrong her angle was, the Dominus had managed to trap it, keep it from moving.

Antares, strike it!

Oh, she definitely did not need to be told twice. With renewed vigor, Madalena jumped off the ground and moved into the demon, her lightsaber swinging from side to side in the eternal infinity shape s she plunged it into the smoky mass. If the smoke demon had been actually corporal, there would have been slices of it on the ground, ready to be roasted and eaten. Instead, the demon merely exploded, the smoke vanishing into thin air as though it was nothing but innocent steam.

Turning around to look at the Dominus with a proud smile, the smile vanished quickly as she realized the second demon was still there, now hovering over the Dominus.

"WATCH OUT!" Madalena screamed as she lurched from where she'd been standing towards that smoke demon, lightsaber still in hand. She didn't have to obliterate it, though that would be nice. All she had to do was buy the Dominus a few more seconds so he could react as well and not end up getting taken over..

The Dark Side of the Force grasped Cardinal, causing him to scream out as the Smoke Demon attempted to claim him. The lightsaber in his hands fell to the ground, lifelessly as the Dominus followed, his knees slamming into the ground. His hands rose to push on his temples, yelling out as he did. This demon had caught him off guard, yet his mental defenses survived the initial strike. The Demon let out a fearsome roar, perhaps born from it's frustration in not being able to take the man's body, one that would surely present it with days of nourishment.

It was Madalena's approach that caused the creature to end it's siege. It recoiled, letting out more of those screeches as it did. Cardinal exhaled, his eyes sinking to the bottom of their lids as he brought himself back to focus. As Madalena stepped to the side, Cardinal stood up to his full height, his hand held out so the lightsaber would fly to the palm of his hands. Snatching the device out of the open air the Dominus charged forward. For how large the man was he seemed to move as light as a feather and blindingly fast. The blade of the lightsaber came up, following the trail of the retreating smoke demon.

The mist and cloud quickly parted from the force of the blade, causing the Smoke Demon to disperse into a cloud that would quickly fade from existence. As the demon began to fade from existence, Cardinal could feel the Dark Side coursing through him. It was apparent the Dominus Prime had tapped into that nether for the burst of energy that let him destroy the beast. He had been leaned over, following his strike through. Recovering from the attack, Cardinal glanced around before making his way over to Madalena. His eyes were no longer their vibrant sunburnt orange and were closer to a flaring crimson. His hand outstretched, handing the weapon out to Madalena before he recovered his own sword from the ground.

"Smoke Demons do not just appear." He finally said, hoisting the blade over his shoulder. "They are created and then summoned, usually by a Sith Lord." Cardinal glanced around, his eyes gazing over the surrounding trees with an uncertain expression. "These were especially strong but...Something about them was different." He muttered the final part before making his way back onto the main path. "Stay close." He commanded, the Dark Side of the Force slowly pulling itself from him.

Her plan had worked! The few seconds the Sithling had bought the Dominus the time needed for him to regain his composure and lash at the smoke demon. Even with the adrenaline and heat of battle, her gaze and mind were focused, watching carefully at the taller man's actions and what it exactly was he was doing to vanquish it. That was how it done it. First strikes to see where the smoke was retreating to, and then repeated offenses against where it was trying to hide at. It made sense, now that she thought about it.

Her weapon extended back to her, Madalena nodded, only now realizing she was out of breath, and sheathed her weapons back to her belt.

"I've never come across a Smoke Demon before," she said, "how do they usually feel? What was so different about these two besides their strength?"

Not needing to be told again, the Sithling stayed close to the Dominus, having no plans on opening u space that could be abused by potential lurking dangers. "I can feel the Darkside in you," she said quietly, "it's you but it's not you. I have no intention of prying into your private affairs, but is there something I should know for the sake and success of this mission?"

Sunburnt eyes were focused, scanning the trees that surrounded the duo as they continued on. Cardinal had never seen something like this before. If there was a Sith of any significant power nearby he should be able to sense him. The Dominus' advance faltered and he fell to a single knee, running a hand over the barren ground below him. There was no lingering trace of the Dark Side. The Smoke Demons had seemed to vanish into nothingness. His fingers curled a handful of dirt into his palm while he looked at it with a confused gaze. Realizing he must have appeared to be zoning out to Madalena, he shook his head before looking around one final time.

"No I imagine you wouldn't....They're an ancient evil. Pure manifestations of the Dark Side." He spoke, and then his words dropped below a mutter. "Even I have not seen one for years...not even from the Sith Empire." Cardinal did not linger where he knelt. Instead he stood up, his Greatsword yet hoisted on his shoulder as he turned an alert gaze to Madalena. "Smoke Demons have a distinct presence in the Force. A ravaging hunger. These demons...I could not sense that hunger in them. It was as if they were consuming us out of anger, or sport." Cardinal's jaw ticked as he considered his own words. Still, he turned down the main path, leading them deeper into the wooded area.

Cardinal did not look back at Madalena as she spoke. His eyes were fixed on what laid ahead. He would have preferred not to respond to her words at all, yet he could not leave her in silence. "The Dark Side is strong in my people." He explained simply, not truly wishing to explain even further. "Especially so for me."

"I have control over it. I just prefer to restrain from using it." Once Cardinal had believed the darkness to be something to fear, yet as the years passed he was allowing himself to tap into it more often then he would admit. Perhaps it had not formed him into a monster....but he was wary of it.

Cardinal did not speak again until they found themselves at the mouth of a cave, carved into the side of a large hill. With the thick brush of trees, it was nearly impossible to see from afar and the Dominus would have disregarded it....were it not for the blood.

Thick crusting of the crimson liquid all but painted the entrance of the cave. Cardinal pulled his sword from his shoulder, advancing forward closely, slowly. He reached out with the Force, hoping it would give him some clue as to what laid inside. Nothing. His grip tightened and he continued to ease towards the entrance, glancing back at Madalena as his feet crunched into a mass of blood and entrails. He did not spare it a glance and instead continued on.

The mouth of the cave had covered the entrance in shadows and darkness, however once they stepped within it was quickly noticed that the cave was shallow, only a few meters deep into the hill. Cardinal cursed softly as his eyes took in the sight before him. A heavy stench swam into his nose as his eyes befell a massacre. There must have been hundreds of them at one point. Lining the wall of the cave was a number of wicker baskets, each one filled with a number of....extras. Tongues, fingers, ears, lips, and less wholesome parts of the body had been tightly packed into these baskets. Cardinal lowered his blade as he saw that there was no enemy here, no enemy here anymore at least. Pinching the bridge of his nose, he exhaled at the barbarism.

"We need to alert the Viceroy to this planet....We've found the villagers." He said no more as his eyes befell a small piece of parchment that had been discarded on the ground. Like most everything else surrounding them it was stained in blood and had the smell of death upon it. There was a single crimson rune, however it was an anomaly to the Dominus Prime. Rather than spend time analyzing the piece of paper he stuffed it into one of his pouches, before raising his greatsword over his back, allowing it to magnetize to the back of his armor. "Damn..." Cardinal muttered, before letting his eyes scan the cave once more.

With nothing more to be said he turned out of the cave, tapping the comm device on his wrist. "This planet needs to be searched, thoroughly." He said, taking in the fresh air that replaced the smell of guts and blood. "I have the feeling whoever did this is long gone." He muttered, before tapping the pouch where he'd put the paper. "But maybe we can find them."

Madalena remained quiet. The smoke demon thing sounded weird, but she felt like she lacked enough information to ask relevant questions about the matter. As for the Darkside and the Dominus' people… Not something that was her right to poke into, beyond the few words he had to give it. She could sense that there was something he didn't want to say, something at the tip of his tongue, but she let it go. Many Force practitioners had the wrong idea about the Darkside. Madalena was born and raised into it; but now was hardly the time for a philosophical debate.

She smelled the blood long before they came across the cage, the former life that had been imbedded in it calling out to her like the soft caress of a childhood lullaby. Madalena was, for lack of a better term, a Blood Hound. Though she did not feed on it and it did not nourish her, she had an affinity to it, and it always called and drew her to it.

"Give me a sound and give me the night, let me see it all tonight," the words came out of her, and the darkness inside the cave sprang to life for her, everything now showing in shades of pinks and purples. It was one of her favorite spells from the little bit that she knew of Witch spells, courtesy of her mother.

But whereas for Cardinal, it was stench, for Madalena it smelled almost like a kitchen. Sure, a kitchen that had to be aired out, but there was no discomfort in it.

"Wait," she said softly, and walked to one of the walls, "I am a Blood Hound," she said, as though that would explain anything to someone who did not know what a Blood Hound was.

Closing her eyes and trying her best not to think about the lack of sterilization in a place such as this, Madalena reached forward with her face, and licked the blood on the walls. Licking the blood always gave her the last few seconds; either from the wound or from the moment of death, depending on the source of the blood and when it was taken.

"Smoke demon," she whispered, taking another lick. The blood wasn't fresh enough, and riding it wsa not as easy as it was with blood still warm from the body ithad been contained in, "it's… it was… Yes. It was here. One of them. Ripping those who were in the cave, limb from limb. I can't see how many exactly there were… Of the people, I mean. Of the demon, only one."

Sighing, she went to another wall and licked the blood there as well. "Person. Don't know if male or female. Black hood. When the demon was finished… The hooded person just disappeared. Into thin air."

Turning around, Madalena walked outside. Now she was in need of fresh air as well.

And the first thing she did was try to spit over and over and over again, to get the taste of the blood out of her mouth.

As Cardinal was turning out of the cave, Madalena called out to him causing him to pause. Had she seen something the Dominus Prime had not? When he turned back she explained, vaguely, that she could utilize the blood to aid them in some way or another. He watched as she licked the blood on the wall, his brow raising high as she did. There was no way that could taste good, or even bad, horrible was actually sounding rather weak at the moment. When next she spoke Cardinal gained an understanding. Much how he could read the events that occurred through an object, she could do it through blood.

"Interesting..." He said, eyeing the woman closely, listening to her words. He could not make sense of things. There was no reason to summon a Smoke Demon to this planet only to abandon it. All it had done was cause mass amounts of carnage and await destruction. As Madalena licked once again, Cardinal was sure this was some form of punishment for the woman. She explained the figure she'd seen in her vision and Cardinal fell silent. The amount of people who fit that description was innumerable, yet it had been something. With a nod of his head, Cardinal led Madalena outside.

The Dominus Prime began to tap into his gauntlet absently as he considered all that happened this day. Sunburnt eyes scanned the forest out of caution, yet he could sense nothing. The evil that had come to this planet was gone but Cardinal was not sure why it had come in the first place. "It's time to go...We have a lot of work to do." He explained before making his way back down the trail, still tapping away at his datapad.
