A New Knight

It never stopped, it never ended, and some days it seemed like it never even slowed down. Following the liberation of Felacat, Cardinal had been dealing with a rather large influx of recruits into the ranks of the Knight’s Obsidian. It wasn't something he took lightly, as each Knight was carefully selected by the Order. Although Cardinal did not make all of the selections, some of the more pertinent cases were handled himself. That brought him to the newly built Obsidian Station that hovered over Felacat. Firestar, as it had been dubbed, was a Ragnarok-Class space station that had been specifically built for new recruits.

Walking down the pristine halls of the space station, The Dominus Prime held a cup of caffe in his hand and was chewing the remainder of a piece of jerky. His usual diet, oddly enough, did not consist of many meals. Instead he merely snacked on occasion and fed off the living Force to preserve his strength and maintain his constitution. He looked particularly energetic today as he strode down the halls, his golden eyes glancing around at the new faces that filled the station.

He found himself staring at a door that led into a dimly lit set of offices. It was where he and other senior members conducted their interviews and in processing. Taking a deep sip from his cup of caffe, the Dominus looked to one of the armored Knights standing in front of the door. “How many?” He asked, before one the larger of the two men glanced down to the datapad he had been holding. “About seventy, Sir.” Seventy. That was seventy applicants today. It never ceased to amaze how many soldiers, warriors, and Force Users sought to join the Knights, and those men here today had already completed an initial interview and background check for elimination.

Who is first?” Cardinal asked, as the other Knight handed him a file.

Madalena Antares, Force User, first time recruit.” He said, offering a few basics as he gestured towards one of the offices.

Cardinal nodded before making his way into the office, saying no more to the Knight’s watching the front. As he opened the door, he glanced over to the woman who sat in the dimly lit room, inclining his head to her respectfully. “Madalena?” He asked, already knowing the answer.

She'd been massing up her power for almost a day now, preparing the spell. With the help of a certain slicer, she had accessed her files within the CIS, surprised to learn that she actually did have a salary. It was a momentary joy. The rest of the day, Scherezade had spent instructing the slicer on what had to be changed. In the CIS database, Scherezade deWinter no longer existed. Instead, she gave them a girl by the name of Madalena Antares. She knew Madalena would succeed where she had failed. And two days later, Scherezade deWinter no longer existed.

Dozens of people. Maybe over a hundred. She wasn't sure how many had shown up, but she knew they were all here for the same thing - a position within the Knights Obsidian of the Confederacy.

Madalena smiled to herself. Among these potential recruits, there wasn't a single one that smelled familiar to her. Not through the nose, and certainly not through the Force. Which meant... That the odds her in her favor. Because she had been listed with the Confederacy ever since the destruction of Coruscant. She had lost her home then, had become a refugee, along with her twin brother.

But the Antares twins were made of strong stuff. They'd only given themselves a day to mourn the loss of their home before decisions were made. For the first time in over eighteen years, the twins had decided to split. Her brother headed into the Galactic West, where as she took East. By the recommendation of her best friend, she'd joined the Confederacy, and already had gone on several missions with them as support, the last one being Felacat. There, she had infiltrated the Palace a few days prior to the CIS' arrival, posing as a servant, and when the time came, had teamed up with another CIS member and massacred the Trandoshans, saving the Royal Family. There was also something about using stun guns to get them out of the way to make sure they didn't accidentally get themselves killed, but no one ever commented that it was a bad thing to do. Then again, no one commented that it was a good thing to do, either.

After she'd gotten back to SJO space and had some rest, her mind had been set. She contacted the Confederacy to get more deets, and had decided that the Knights Obsidian were a group she wanted to join. She'd been amazing on Felacat, and she knew she could do much better with an official position. Or at least, with an official joining. Positions would come later.

And so, the Coruscanti-born had arrived, and had been told to wait in a dimly lit room.

Still, she felt confident. She knew she could get this thing done.

When her name was called - surprisingly, she was the first one to be called, another thing that showed just how right this whole thing was - she flashed the man a charming smile and rose from her chair.

She entered the office with a confident walk, and held her hand out to the man to shake it.

"Madalena Antares," she said, smiling again, "thank you so much for seeing me today. I hope the Royal Family on Felacat is doing well now that they've probably recovered from the event."

There was a noticeably odd surge in The Force that resonated from the woman before Cardinal. He paused, his golden eyes peering at her searchingly before his inquisitive gaze was replaced with a rather content smile. The young woman offered her hand and Cardinal reached out with his own gauntleted hand to meet hers. After a brief shake of the hand he gestured back to the seat behind her. “Of course, please be seated.” He stated, his tone holding to the business as usual mentality that Cardinal kept close to.

The Dominus Prime had seen well enough the young woman’s ability during the rebellion on Felacat. She was especially capable and seemed to hold true to her own skill, yet something about her still seemed a bit off. Not enough for Cardinal to bring attention to it however.

Well. Your background check came through and was acceptable.” He said, opening her file and taking a look over what was before her.

You are physically capable, mentally fit, and more than skilled enough to serve in the Knight’s Obsidian.” He said, his eyes never leaving the file until he finally closed it, tossing it on the table in front of Madalena.

Why do you want to join my Knights?” The question was singular and offered no further explanation, yet Cardinal’s expectant gaze showed this question was very important.

As the man began to speak of her background checks, Madalena looked down, the corners of her mouth curling into the tiniest of smiles. Of course she knew it would check out. She was who she said she was. Only when he mentioned mentally fit and having the skills did something move through her, wanting to scream at recognition that came too little too late, but she quickly shoved it down, ignoring it had ever happened. Nothing about her exterior seemed to even hint at that fraction of a second that had belonged to a girl who no longer existed, and as far as Maddie knew, never had existed at all.

When she was asked why she wanted to join the Knights, she looked up, the hint of the smile vanishing from her face. Why did she want to join the Knights? There were so many reasons. But she hadn't expected to be asked that, not truly, and so she permitted herself a handful of seconds as she gathered her thoughts.

"I support the cause of the Confederacy," she began, "which is why I joined it after the destruction of Coruscant. The Confederacy has helped both my and my twin brother get back on our feet after that, and I will be eternally thankful. But I am also at a point in which I can give back, and among the groups within the CIS, the Obsidian Knights are where I am supposed to be. My skills both in and out of the battlefield will fit your need like a glove. You've read my reports about Felacat. I did that without Confederacy resources at my disposal. Think of what I could do both for the Knights if I was an actual part of them."

Her voice was deep, with ever a gentle touch of excitement, but she kept it professional.

What she couldn't keep under her control through, were her eyes. If Cardinal would look, he would notice that as she continued to speak, the emerald green of her eyes was not just noticeable; in fact, it was becoming stronger, until a soft glow came from them.

It was one of Madalena's gifts through the Force. A Darksider, but one unmarked by the colors of the Sith, the green an the glow taking its place instead.

I support the cause of The Confederacy.

To most that answer would seem the guideline of why a warrior would commit themselves to the Knight's Obsidian. However the truth of it was far from the speculation. The Knightly order was certainly composed of scores of warriors who wished to serve The Confederacy in one of it's greatest capacities. Yet there was more to it than a love for "hearth and home," as it were. Many skilled fighters and soldiers merely joined to test and improve their skills, hoping to gain access to training and weaponry to rival the most fiercest the galaxy could send at them. An amusing notion, but not the case with Antares.

Cardinal could sense the shallow emotions that danced around the woman. He found them slightly amusing, yet one would not know by the stoic expression that remained on his face.

"The requirements of the order are not something to turn your head at. It will be very difficult, especially if war was to fall over The Confederacy." His tone suggested he was testing her resolve, yet there was a certain detachment as if his decision had already been made.

A moment of pause was taken as Cardinal's near golden orbs met Madalena's green eyes. They were rather unique, much like his own eyes. He narrowed his eyes at her for a moment before leaning against the table, his hand falling over her file and taking it back into his hands. "You report to the Ryloth in five days. I recommend you take those days to get your affairs in order. After that, your time will no longer be your own, it will be The Confederacy. Do you understand, Knight?" His tone had shifted again, back to one of acceptance, but also of minor exasperation as if the brief time he had spent with the woman had been a bit draining.

“War has already fallen on the Confederacy, sir,” Madalena answered, the hint of smile vanishing from her face, “The Confederacy was part of what happened on Coruscant. Without your involvement, people like me would have been much worse off. There have been other places with war, and the Confederacy was there as well. Not everywhere, it has its limitations, but war is a perpetual state of this galaxy, and that’s not going to change any time soon. And that is part of why I am here. I’m no stranger to the damage and destruction of war; I lost my parents to it two years ago.”

Madalena took a deep breath, gathering her emotions to keep them in check. “I can handle difficult,” she said after a quick pause.

What else was there to say? Unless they were going to speak about her personal experience on the field, which, to be honest, they didn’t really have a reason to discuss since it was all on the file, there wasn’t much she could add. She wasn’t here to take on the role of a cheerleader for the CIS. All Madalena could do was state why she was here, and hope for the best.

And… And… That’s it? She was a Knight? Yes, he referred to her as such. Her face broke into the widest of smiles again. “Yes sir!” she answered with excitement, “Ryloth, five days from now!”

This was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! She had to tell her friends! She had to go prepare! She had to… Wait, what was protocol now?

“Will there be anything else, sir?” Madalena asked.

Cardinal listened intently to the words that came from the woman's mouth. She was a well-thought out woman who seemed intent on her beliefs. He would not fault her for that, and he knew a great deal of her words to be true. War was looming over The Confederacy, it was no longer a matter of if, merely when. He said no more on the matter as it would bring nothing to their conversation, nothing of worth. Her retort caused him to let out a rather dry sound, some odd mixture of interest and a scoff of disbelief. "Hundreds have said the same. We will see."

The wide smile and exclamation of excitement would bring a slight grin to Cardinal's face were it not for his mind already being taken by other thoughts.

He shook his head at her question, before his eyes took to the clock that hung on the wall behind her. "When you reach Ryloth they will discuss your pay, lodging, and training in a rather thorough briefing. Until then, you are dismissed." Cardinal turned back away from the woman, glancing back over his shoulder as he spoke. "Save the sirs for the mainline forces. Here you will refer to your brothers and sisters as Knight, and me as Dominus or Dominus Prime."

Hundreds have said the same. Madalena did not let he face fall at that sentence. It was, after all, true. But she supposed that a lot of things she had to say had been voiced by people much before her. It didn’t matter, though; they were pretty much done with words. The next step was going to be showing him, and the Knights, and the CIS at large, what her actions were.

Payment and other logistics would be discussed on Ryloth. The shiver wet through her again, as though Ryloth itself boded something dark and wrong. But she mentally shoved it aside, knowing she would be there at the appointed time. All the swirling in the pits of her stomach wouldn’t keep her away from it.

“Yes, Dominus,” she corrected herself with another smile, and a nod. So everyone would be Knight, and he would be Dominus or Dominus Prime. She could easily do that. No more sirs sounded great.

Rising from her chair, Madalena held her hand out to the Dominus again, to shake it before leaving, not sure if there were more words to add right there and then.
