OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

PRODUCTION INFORMATION
  • Manufacturer: Aurora Industries
  • Affiliation: Aurora Industries, Closed-Market
  • Model: A-EX 400 Shiftdrive
  • Modularity: Size can be scaled to different starships
  • Production: Minor-production, Mass-Produced
  • Material:
    • Chromium-titanium alloy
    • Durelium
    • Modified Internal Hyperdrive Components
    • Coaxium

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • The A-EX 400 Shiftdrive is designed to allow equipped ships the ability to move between Otherspace and Realspace at will through the use of a modified null quantum field generator and hyperdrive field guide.
  • While the primary purpose for the drive is for travel to and from an alternate dimension, the Shiftdrive can function just as well as any standard Class I (corvette and below) or Class II (frigate and above) hyperdrive, depending on the size installed on the ship.
  • For emergencies or tactical use depending on the situation, the Shfitdrive has an auto-injector of refined coaxium stored that can be activated by a pilot for a massive and quick boost for their jumps.

STRENGTHS
  • Building off the A-XX 200 Otherdrive, and the scrapped ideas for the A-XX 300, the A-EX 400 is able to create a much smoother transition between Otherspace and Realspace for starships installed with one.
  • If not being used for Otherspace traversal, the Shiftdrive is a dependable Class I hyperdrive for smaller ships and a Class II hyperdrive for larger ships.
  • Coaxium booster injector allows for greatly enhance travel speeds if in an emergency or needing a boost for combat situations.

WEAKNESSES
  • While not as debilitating as the A-XX 200, the A-EX 400 when used for Otherspace travel shuts offensive weapon systems, such as turbolasers, ion cannons, and mass drivers down for five minutes. Defensive emplacements such as flak guns or point defense lasers are untouched.
  • If the hyperdrive is sabotaged in any way, the resulting energy distortion will send random parts of the ship to Otherspace and leave other parts in Realspace, tearing the ship apart violently.

DESCRIPTION

For several years, Aurora Industries has been quietly exploring the mysterious realm known as Otherspace, mapping quadrants and looking for exploitable resources. To do so, they have been using an increasingly old piece of technology, the A-XX 200 Otherdrive, on older stealth freighter to escape the attention of the hostile lifeforms known as the Charon. Plans had initially been made to create a A-XX 300, but had been scrapped when the design team for the project was shifted away to work on other technology.

With Phase 2 of Aurora's modernization program kicking into full swing, Ary Jaxson and Taeli decided the time was proper for a new drive that could be used as both a hyperdrive for Aurora ships and also as a way to access Otherspace. Eschewing the Otherdrive brand for potential copyright issues, the new system would be called the A-EX 400 Shiftdrive. The new system works much like its predecessor, utilizing a modified null quantum field generator and hyperdrive field to execute transitions to Otherspace. Aurora engineers have further worked on the modifications, making them more efficient and the transitions smoother between dimensions.

Drawbacks have been mitigated further so that only a ship's offensive weaponry cannot be fire for a period of five minutes, but defensive systems will still remain fully operational, if an Otherspace traversal is activated. When not in use for Otherspace exploration, the Shiftdrive can function like any Class I hyperdrive for smaller ships up to the size of a corvette and a Class II for frigate-class vessels and above.
