Private You Wear Cotton, Cotton Breathes

From her position on the ground, in a very subtle crouch, breathing softly and muted on every spectrum, Niysha could make out a few things: the critter was quite distracted, and Valery was a springy little devil. Neither of them seemed terribly interested in things happening in other parts of the ruins. And there was still the main room with the blindingly powerful object inside. In all aspects, Niysha had the run of the place. Valery might or might not be able to handle this beast, but until she did or died, it was just... Niysha and the artifact.

She could just take it. And leave.

Sith were impulsive creatures, driven by instinct just as much as Jedi were, but with far more raw emotion behind those gut reflexes. Most acted on rash temper and naked ambition; it was the main way that most achieved any level of power. Niysha lacked those coarse passions, but she wasn't without her vices. When faced with a situation where she could simply take something she wanted, her greed welled up like a swelling tide. She stared into the blinding, bright heart of the innermost room of the ruin for several seconds. Transfixed. It would be so easy to just take it.

As always, though, she possessed astounding self-control. Fear tempered her basest impulses before greed could tempt her into making any mistakes. Valery was going to kill that thing sooner or later, and there was only one way out of the room. Fear brought to Niysha the cold logic that she wouldn't be able to escape, and Valery could kill her much more easily than she did the monster behind her. Fear sharpened her mind and senses, bringing with it ideas she wouldn't be able to consider in other situations.

Niysha had just a few seconds. She rested on her knees, deactivated lightsaber across her lap, and let herself slip away.

The galaxy was vast. Infinite. Trillions of stars, ten times as many planets, uncountable masses of stardust between them. In that unending expanse was a single, imperceptibly tiny speck of dust. Upon that speck were a few trees, and a few old rocks. Beneath one of those rocks was a spiralling mass of darkness and stone, tunneling down into the planet. And deep within those dark tunnels was a loud, squirming creature fighting a tiny, blazing star.

The unshaped detritus of thought and destiny that was once Niysha swirled into that space, suspended in the convenient myth of time for the breath of the moment and the infinite desert of the future. Everything All At Once was impossible to percieve, but fortunately, the Force didn't need what remained of Niysha to understand everything to bend to her will. The unending chaos of All Things was thick and turbulent, but with focus, will, and no slight bit of slightly frenzied panic, the amalgamated mass of what once was that might once again become Niysha tore through it to find exactly what was needed.

She fell back into herself.

Niysha only had seconds to act. With a deep breath, she stood from her position, turned slightly out of cover, and held out one hand to touch the Force in front of her. She gently caressed all that laid between her and the beast, then, when she felt its essence, grit her teeth and channeled every ounce of impotent, useless fury into one violent action. Her fingers gripped tight, clutching an invisible object in midair. In tandem, one of the monster's claws halted in midair and emited a sudden sound, like cracking ice.

For just a moment, its momentum was halted, and its chitin weakened along just one limb. Raw power was difficult, but she didn't need to crush the thing's throat, or its claws. All she needed was to fracture a joint for a moment and bring its movement to a screeching stop. Her presence, formerly silent and tiny, wept wrath, flavored with insecurity and frustration. She might be able to hold it for another second or two.

The moment the monster's claw cracked and stopped mid-swing, Valery felt it. A shift. A ripple in the Force like a taut wire snapping in the dark. It wasn't a surprise. She knew Niysha was there, and she'd counted on the younger woman not running. What did surprise her was the strength behind it. The fury. Not uncontrolled, but sharpened. A wedge hammered straight into the creature's joint.

Valery didn't waste a breath.

She surged forward, body low, saber angled in both hands. The violet blade flared brighter for a heartbeat, then dimmed again as she moved. Not just fast, but impossibly so. She slipped through the air like a lightning bolt, arcing through the narrow space between claw and torso. Her blade found the gap just beneath the beast's shoulder and drove clean through to the other side.

There was no roar. No gurgle. Only silence.

Valery landed in a crouch on the far side, back turned, saber already extinguished. The beast stood frozen behind her. Then it collapsed, a slow, crumbling fall as limbs gave out and breath left its lungs in a single low exhale. Not a single drop of blood marked her suit. She rose slowly, brushing back loose strands of hair, and turned toward the pillar.

"Nice work," she said, her voice level but tinged with something warmer. Her eyes found Niysha's.

Another pause.

"I think we should talk."

As expected, Valery dealt with it in short order. It was debatable whether what Niysha had done had even helped her in any measurable way. She certainly hadn't needed it in the slightest, but Niysha was willing to delude herself with the deception that she'd at least provided a momentary distraction that made the killing blow easier for the Jedi to land. At this point, she didn't have much ego left to nurse back to health.

Interacting with Valery Noble was so very, very similar to being in the presence of a Sith Lord. Niysha had a feeling that neither Valery nor any Sith she met in the future would be terribly pleased with that opinion.

For now, though, the danger had passed, and Niysha allowed herself a moment to breathe. It was a bit stuffy in here, what with all of the running and jumping and screaming. She leaned back against the pillar she'd been hiding behind, slumped slightly and grateful to the stone for the support it provided. For just one little moment, she was safe.

Then Valery rapidly approached her location. That fear spiked again. Familiar and comfortable. If the Jedi wanted to kill her now, she didn't have many ways to avoid it. Valery hadn't been like that so far, but there was always the possibility she was a fantastic liar and was just waiting to crush Niysha when the finish line was within her grasp. She'd known a few Sith like that.

Her words were less calm than normal. She even stuttered a bit. "Y-yeah? What are we going to talk about?" She couldn't exactly back up, but judging by how her hands were grasping at the pillar she was rapidly being cornered against, she was certainly trying. Unfortunately and alas, she was instead burdened with the unbearable agony of being perceived.

Valery didn't answer right away. She stepped forward slowly, calm and steady. Each step closed the space between them, the sounds of the fallen creature fading into silence behind her. Her saber remained clipped to her belt. Her hands were open and relaxed at her sides.

She stopped just in front of Niysha.

Then, gently, Valery placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Calm down," she said, her voice low but firm. Just enough to cut through the spiral Niysha was caught in. "If I wanted to hurt you, I would have already."

Her smile came next. Small. Real.

"You did well and helped me."

She kept her hand where it was, steady as her gaze.

"I'm not your enemy, Niysha. Not unless you make me one. So take a breath. You're safe."

There were many things Niysha felt while pressed by one strong Jedi arm against a pillar in a silent stone room on a forgotten planet over the corpse of an ancient monster, but "safe" wasn't in the top five. A consistent problem she'd had looking at Valery to this point had been the general blazing, untamed brightness of her aura, and in all honesty that probably should've been much worse when she was close enough that Niysha could feel the warmth of her breath.

Instead, it had reduced to a smolder. Valery's aura had taken on a subtle, warm glow as her vibe settled from "this place is very dangerous" down to "alright we're probably good." It would have been just about comforting, if not for the whirling death golem it was attached to. As per usual, Niysha's gut reflex was to find a way to get out of the room in the fastest, most direct manner possible.

Then, Valery gave her a direct order, and everything but her lizard brain shut down. Calm down. Niysha's chin tilted up just a bit to maintain what amounted to eye contact, and her voice managed to reply back in a half-distant, very overwhelmed drone. "Okay." It was difficult to tell if Niysha was barely there or extremely there.

Take a breath. Without thinking, Niysha was already inhaling deeply. She let out a long, ragged breath and swallowed hard. Words were exceptionally difficult, and frankly she couldn't spare that much brainpower for them in her current situation. Fortunately, thinking wasn't quite so necessary.

Because she really couldn't imagine a safer place to be than inside Valery Noble's instant death radius when Valery Noble didn't actively want to hurt her.
