During Mahporeem's occupation by the Galactic Empire, numerous space battles took place above the planet, with the Rebel Alliance making a number of raids on the planet's facilities during the Galactic Civil War.
Large amounts of both Rebel and Empire starfighters were damaged or destroyed in these battles, causing the space around the planet to become littered with shipwrecks and abandoned starfighters. The Mahporeem Imperial Remnant inheriting these space graveyards, and decided to salvage what they could to form a fleet of TIE "Uglies" as a means of supplementing their rather meager navy.
One of the TIE "Ugly" models developed by Mahporeem is the Y-Fender Ugly, a combination of a TIE Defender and a Y-Wing. Of all the "uglies" in Mahporeem Naval Service, the Y-Fender is easily the rarest model due to the low number of available TIE Defender parts.
That being said, the few starfighters that were constructed by Mahporeem are fearsome opponents, combing the strengths of both the Y-Wing and TIE Defender. Though offering inferior performance to a standard TIE Defender, the Y-Fender is far faster and more maneuverable than a stock Y-Wing while retaining most of the TIE Defender's fearsome armament.
The real draw of the vehicle, however, is its low cost of acquisition, due to the fact that it can be assembled out of already available starfighter parts.
