Venator Model Semi-Powered Infiltration Armour was created as a pet project by Anarielle Giala Mero to confer some of the benefits of a mechanical exoskeleton and powered armour onto an individual without having to compromise agility, cross-section and mobility. As a suit of Infiltration Semi-Powered Armour opts for minimalist hard armour protection in stark contrast to that trend observable on other designs created by Samaria Heavy Engineering's chairman. Designed to mimic the appearance of a high-end paramilitary operator or bounty hunter in an attempt to blend in with the latter community, the system was designed to provide total anonymity including a programmable vocal emulator that can manipulate the wearer's speech pitch and frequency output to closely match that of another organic. A Holographic disguise matrix is implemented into the armour's cuirass which can project any number of detailed silhouettes over the wearers body although it isn't perfect and more often than not the VENATOR's onboard computer fails to track fast and sharp movements from its' wearer leaving a flaw in any potential deception. In an attempt to compensate for the Holographic Disguise Matrix's the VENATOR is additionally equipped a cloaking device which provides comprehensive spoofing against detection on all bands of the electromagnetic spectrum including visible light permitting effective engagement in Clandestine or Covert-type Operations. However, not even the cloaking device is perfect as the power draw is so large on the systems' painstakingly small Nuclear Fusion reactor that it is incapable of sufficiently powering the Deflector Shield Generator and cloaking system concurrently forcing a choice between stealth and protection.
As a Semi-Powered Armour system, the VENATOR possesses an electrically managed exoskeleton system that supports the systems' weight only in select areas, as a rule the armour above the waist is connected to the electrically driven exoskeleton while anything beneath it isn't with no electrical assistance this leaves the wearer's running speed unchanged although as the upper body is powered they should be able to move somewhat quicker than if they had worn traditional body armour. The Helmet possesses an independent and durable power supply with a lifespan far exceeding that of the Exoskeleton Proper. The Exoskeleton provides the wearer with approximately one-hundred and sixty kilograms of lifting power which is incredibly useful when the operation of heavy support weapons, industrial machinery or disarmed fighting becomes a necessity, unfortunately as the Exoskeleton only extends to the upper body this leaves the wearer with very impressive strength above the waist and unaugmented comparatively lacklustre strength in the lower body. This can be an issue for most individuals if the exoskeleton’s power source were to be temporarily disabled or fail and subsequently be dropped on the wearer’s body which would then have to be supported disproportionately by the wearer’s muscles in the legs and abdominal regions. As a saving grace the system’s hard-armour plates are conspicuously absent between the knees and hip reducing load-bearing on the quadriceps.
The Armour's first tier of protection is a TYI Flex-Armour bodysuit that interfaces with the systems' hard-armour plates to translate their movements to the electrically driven exoskeleton. The Flex-Armour bodysuit when combined with the rest of the system acts as a last-ditch effort in an attempt to prevent penetration with a durasteel weave implemented into the construction which can successfully absorb the energy generated by low-velocity slugthrower pistol rounds in most cases along with being cut and stab resistant. While the Flex-Armour undoubtedly provides some protective quality, it doesn’t compromise on agility, dexterity or mobility. During construction a Duravlex layer is applied to the bodysuit which renders it and the wearer inside of it immune to ignition and therefore the threat of immolation is non-existent. A Thermal Gel-Layer is sandwiched into the TYI Flex-Armour bodysuit to provide protection to the wearer’s soft tissue and bones from non-penetrating strikes from projectiles, this also has the additional benefit of permitting the operator to fall great distances without risk of receiving crippling or debilitating injury. Across the Flex-Armour bodysuit is a variety of vacuum-sealed cannula ports which can be connected to a Cannula that’s inserted into the wearer’s anterior antebrachial vein on either arm to facilitate intravenous infusion of stims and other beneficial chemical cocktails without necessitating the breach of system’s hermetic seal. These ports are concealed by discrete openings in the hard-armour ports, with an additional port in the bicep region on either sleeve for intramuscular injection. The Flex-Armour also features an automated defibrillator build into the thoracic region that connects to the wearer via adhesive diode pads, the defibrillator is operated and managed by the droid brain as necessary.
Mainline protection is provided by a series of lasercut segmented or ribbed Durasteel and Titanium plating secured to the bodysuit with incredibly tight magnetised clamps which concurrently connect the exoskeleton contained within the plating itself and bodysuit together permitting the wearer to articulate their upper body and its’ limbs in a weightless fashion offering a superior advantage over traditional body armour without having the same bulk and cross-section as a traditional powered armour suit. The Durasteel-Titanium armour covers the systems’ upper thoracic region and the front of abdominal region with two rows of ribbed plates which permit flexibility without leaving this region unarmoured unfortunately however in the interest of keeping maximum agility and flexibility the sides of ribs beneath the users’ arms lack any distinct hard-armour and instead the bodysuit is reinforced in these regions. The sleeves are covered in form-fitting lasercut hard-armour plates which feature a modular design with right vambrace permitting the installation of a spring-loaded 15-20cm vibroblade which can be fired as a projectile at short-range if necessary. The left vambrace contains a graphical user interface ‘tactical pad’ that the wearer can use to provide inputs to the Venator’s onboard computer. The Venator’s boots cover the wearer’s leg in armour from the ankle to the knee although the knee to the hip-joint is entirely unarmoured for comfort and to ensure mobility and reduced load-bearing in the event the semi-powered armour’s power supply unit is temporarily offline or disabled during combat.
The most outwardly distinct feature of the Venator Semi-Powered Armour is a peculiar designed helmet, constructed mostly from reinforced transparisteel with programmable polarisation to provide the wearer with an unparalleled field of view which is useful when sighting targets at both long and short-range. While visors are typically regarded as a distinct structural weakness this particular one has been hardened and capable of receiving direct hits from blaster pistols and rifles without breaking, with the same being said for Slugthrowers. The Helmet’s frame tapers into a pair of pointed ‘ears’ which was intended to be a subtle design statement about its’ designers Non-Human origin with them styled sharply and angled in an attempt to convey a hardy impression onto observers as a method of psychological warfare. Image magnification is handled by a pair of high-powered horizontal camera lenses and provide the helmet with the distinctive glowing ‘eyes’ silhouette and correspond roughly into the correct location. The Helmet features an induction port for the ingestion of vital liquids and foodstuffs connected to a straw that is rotated in and out of the user’s mouth by the droid brain as commanded.
The Helmet’s firmware and helmet-mounted display is completely re-programmable which allows the operator to tailor the information displayed and even customise the widget appearances. Many of the helmet-mounted display’s widgets is faintly visible through the visor’s polarisation due to their typical brightness. Amongst the Widgets displayed on the helmet-mounted display is the macromotion monitor with a range out to twenty-five meters the widget displays contacts on a three-hundred and sixty degree bearing with a dynamically shifting axis as the wearer reorientates themselves, with three different symbols used to indicate whether or not a contact is elevated or depressed relative to the armour, with the widget default appearing in the bottom left-hand corner of display. There is a dynamic reticule produced by the onboard computer based on a scan made of the operator’s current weapon and shifts depending on where the barrel’s axis is aimed permitting for increased precision fire especially on the move, the helmet-mounted display also tracks the weapon’s current battery and gas charge in the top-right hand corner. There is additionally a default widget at the top of display in the centre for bearing based on a mounted magnetic compass, permitting the wearer to easily navigate a local celestial or terrestrial environment without having to manually orientate themselves. Beneath the magnetic compass readout usually sits the deflector shield generator’s current charge permitting the wearer to track how close it is to collapsing which is useful when advancing under fire, when it gets low the helmet emits a rapid and panicked beeping noise within its’ confines as a warning to the operator.
Anonymity and identity security is absolutely stressed in its’ design with the Venator’s armour and bodysuit following a more masculine design as far as comfort will allow for a female operator. The computer and droid brain are both programmed to distort and warp the wearer’s speech as it passes through the annunciator to be completely unrecognisable as the Operator. The Venator was manufactured by a Skunkworks team within Samaria Heavy Engineering however the company’s markings are completely absent from the armour as is any identifying serial number or model name instead it has generic ‘paramilitary’ markings painted on it designed to imitate a private military contractor. All records and schematics of the armour were composed and stored on paper exclusively and locked away in a vault to ensure no technical information can be retrieved electronically. To ensure the equipment cannot be forensically linked to Samaria Heavy Engineering the Semi-Powered Armour has zero commonality in parts with any other of their designs besides some aesthetic similarities between its’ helmet and a yet in-development project. The helmet-mounted display features retinal and facial feature scanning technology which is used by the droid brain upon start-up to identify the wearer as Anarielle Giala Mero, if the identity check is failed the power supply unit will automatically shut-down. There is also an additional security feature that can be enabled where a verbal password must be spoken to authorise access to the armour. Three failures to bypass the security system results in a total data, driver, firmware and programming purge leaving the Exoskeleton with no drivers and the armour incapable of starting up again.
User interface with the Venator is made convenient through the inclusion of an on-board computer which can store all manner of data useful to the wearer, user input into the armour’s systems are usefully done through the Droid Brain which communicates with Venator’s operator verbally and is capable of understanding Galactic Basic to manipulate the armour’s software on the user’s command. The droid brain uses sensors throughout the TYI Flex-Armour bodysuit to determine whether or not it is appropriate to manipulate the systems’ internal pressure and temperature to ensure maximum operator comfort or performance for example lowering the air-conditioning temperature to counteract high ambient temperatures created by the local atmosphere and/or environment. The droid brain also operates the defibrillator built into the system using information such as the Operator’s blood pressure, heart rate taken from different nodes, eye behaviour and movement to decide whether or not defibrillation is necessary. This is important as the bodysuit itself can make it difficult to attach a defibrillator properly to the operator’s body if necessary.
The entire Venator system confers limited protection against unconventional threats, the electrical components are EMP hardened and protected by circuit-breakers to prevent them being burned out by short-wavelength bursts of electromagnetic energy seen in the release of Nuclear detonations or EMP grenades though it remains vulnerable to the effects of Ion Blasters. The total sum of Ionizing radiation the wearer receives in energy when operating in contaminated environments is reduced by approximately thirty percent which is sufficient to safely operate in a vacuum beyond the protective varnish created by terrestrial atmosphere and briefly move through environments significantly contaminated by gamma radiation emitting radioactive isotopes. Fortunately, the Armour system does protect against chemical and biological contaminants with a dedicated hermetic seal and life support system which contains enough vital gas for ninety minutes of endurance in vacuum settings with indefinite supplies in contaminated areas thanks to the closed-circuit rebreather system and life support system’s purification high efficiency.
Strengths:
- Ballistic Protection: The Reinforced Duraplast and Titanium plating utilized throughout the VENATOR’s protective suite is sufficiently thick, tough, hard and ductile to successfully defeat slugthrower rounds of anti-material calibre fired from high-velocity rifles. Preventing penetration by these munitions in locations where the ‘hard’ armour plates is present. It is worth noting there are significant areas of the armour particularly in the lower body not protected by these hard-armour plates.
- Cloaking Device: Equipped with an advanced cloaking device the Venator’s operator can usually avoid detection on the entire electromagnetic spectrum with it engaged. However, as visible light bends around the Venator its’ silhouette can be identified in close proximity by the attentive. Use of the Cloaking Device also hogs power generated by the onboard miniature nuclear fusion reactor and leaves the Operator without deflector shielding while it’s engaged.
- Deflector Shield Generator: VENATOR Semi-Powered Armour is equipped with a deflector shield generator that confers protection to the wearer’s entire body as a hard-kill system, interdicting high velocity projectiles such as those fired from blasters or verpine shatter guns; preventing them from impacting the VENATOR’s armour or any of the unarmoured areas. It doesn’t interdict travelling any projectiles travelling at a velocity relative to the user lower than thirty meters per second however, it isn’t without flaw or vulnerability.
- Exoskeleton: Equipped with an electrically-operated Exoskeleton the VENATOR provides it’s wearer with one-hundred and sixty kilograms of lifting power which permits even a wearer of modest strength to wield heavy weapons easily and engage physically powerful humanoids species on more or less equal terms. However, it’s worth noting as a rule that the upper body receives this augmentation while the lower does not and thus confers no increased running speed for example.
- Holographic Disguise Matrix: Holographic Disguise Matrix integration into the Venator permits the wearer to passably infiltrate civil and military environments while wearing the armour by projecting one of four pre-loaded appearances over the operator’s silhouette. This Matrix is of high quality and capable of spoofing scanning attempts by sensors and close visual inspection, however if the wearer moves quickly the projection quickly and obviously distorts and flickers fast enough that the Venator armour beneath it can be perceived. However, use of the disguise matrix indefinitely requires that the user divert power from the Deflector Shield Generator taking the shields offline increasing vulnerability.
- Thermal Gel-Layer: There is a Thermal Gel-Layer sandwiched into the system’s bodysuit which absorbs the kinetic energy imparted onto the wearer from any moving object or projectile. The Thermal Gel-Layer also drastically increases the distance which the user can safely fall and escape without injury as the Gel layer hardens on impacts in response transferring the force onto itself instead of the wearer.
Weaknesses:
- Armour Coverage: There is a distinct and conspicuous lack of ‘hard’ armour between the knee and hips leaving the thigh area on both completely uncovered, this was a deliberate design choice to reduce the system’s weight and try and maintain some description of mobility in the event the armour’s exoskeleton was disabled and all of its’ subsequent weight dropped on the wearer’s body. There is a distinct absence of ‘hard’ armour across the sides of ribs along with the lower back to promote agility, comfort and flexibility at the cost of surface coverage.
- Cloaking Device Flaws: Not without flaw the Cloaking Device warps visible and invisible light around the wearer’s silhouette and on close inspection another individual in close-proximity to the wearer under good lighting conditions should be able to make out this silhouettes shape and thus raise suspicion. The power supply unit is additionally unable to provide sufficient power flow to both the cloaking device and deflector shield generator concurrently forcing the operator to choose between increased protection or camouflage.
- Deflector Shield Flaws: The Deflector Shield Generator equipped to the VENATOR Semi-Powered Armour possesses a number of flaws as a result of its’ design. It only interdicts projectiles accelerating towards the wearer at velocity equal or greater to thirty meters per second. This results in the vast majority of cases its’ failure to destroy melee weapons or fast-moving shrapnel, the former of which includes lightsabres and electro-plasma weapons. The Deflector Shield Generator doesn’t react to the overpressure waves created by sonics resulting in another series of weapons that can completely bypass the first line of defence.
- Disruptors: Due to the sheer destructive power of Disruptors they are entirely capable of forcing the Deflector Shield System to collapse on contact and rip through the subsequent armour beneath with the potential to cause debilitating or grievous injuries to the wearer.
- Ion Weapons: Ion-Based Weapons have devastating effects on the Semi-Powered Armour system, with pistols being capable of depleting the Deflector Shield in a single shot while heavier Ion Blaster Rifles can trip the PSU’s circuit breaker or even destroy the vital component and render the exoskeleton without power disabling several useful features and dropping the armour’s eighty-eight kilograms of weight onto the wearer. Destroying the Power Supply Unit or temporarily putting it offline will also rob the system’ of its’ cloaking and shielding features.
- Particle Beams: Blasters and Cannon-type weapons that rely on particle-beam technology fire shots so powerful they often brute-force their way through the Deflector shields entirely forcing them to collapse and slam into the underlying armour without any necessity to previously deplete the shield with concentrated fire.
- Solar Ionisation Weapons: Solar Ionisation Cannons and blasters due to their principles and behaviour completely bypass the Deflector Shields generated by the Venator Armour massively increasing the wearer’s vulnerability to these types of weapons especially when combined with the Venator’s moderate hard-armour cross section.
- Sonics: Venator Semi-Powered Armour is not designed to withstand sonic weapons, although it does feature sonic dissipators within the helmet lining to protect the wearer from noise levels which might damage the nerves within the ears. What’s worse is that due to the nature of Sonic weapons they also completely bypass the Deflector Shield System, as a saving grace they also do not drain it however.
