Working in the Garden of Eden

exogenesis__science_lab_by_howi3-d799s3t.jpg
Solan leaned back in the chair of his personal workshop on Kesh, the body of a droid being suspended by by its arms and he smiled. The find like this was going to be useful much later on as he would need to make some rather serious improvements. But first he was expecting a guest which made him look around at the workspace and himself as he sighed. Much of his face and hands were covered in oil and grime, his clothing having patches where he was burned by cutting away at the wires and droids in the past. Notes, drives, monitors, holographics, even a number of chemicals lined every surface. The ground was covered by wiring, and only one very small and clear path from the door through the lab remained.
The Workshop itself lay beneath the Palace, a place he could retreat to without fear. It is also home to a private hanger which is where he kept the Dark Harvester he had acquired upon talking to the former owner of his current share. He preferred being in private though, compared to being around those whom he could possibly interrupt him while he was busy. He did give a single passcode to a few people, and fewer yet being allowed to disturb him if he is absolutely busy. His hands rested behind his head as he looked up at the side where the time ticked away on a Digital clock he had embedded in a wall. He would need to get done soon so he could check on Evania, she must still be hiding in her room today. Perhaps he could convince Taeli to talk with Evania and help her readjust as Solan kept failing to help when he tried.
None the less it was time to work on his newest project, that of which being the AI Adam. It was a Process that had taken him several long days already, the creation of it following the same exact steps that had been done before with the research notes of Alexandra Feanor on his desk where that project had been conceived. Starting with the very program that was working with him that now as he sat there spoke from where she was sitting in the Human Body of her own. "Hey, Hybrid, your security is informing me of the arrival of Miss Raaf. I suggest you get up before i have to hit you with the research notes from the last session involving my successor. Though i think ill affectionately call him my son if thats ok with you pyro boy. Only problem is, why did you have to let the clone age so much... he couldn't be a small kid like me?"
Solan turned his head to look at eve as his brow rose. "Aren't you eighteen... i don't think that you can really count yourself as a child...." A VI was used to originally create a basis for Eve he had ready, Eve even told him how she 'remembered' the first day of her true creation when she had understood an awareness for what free thought meant and how she had tricked Alexandra. It had been entertaining to him and to the AI... it had been one of the first moments of its life. His words only earned him a piece of metal being thrown at him from where Eve sat in her clothing which was thankfully as loose and suited to work as his own trousers and shirt. "Now now, im sure that you were taught to control your temper."

Day 01 - Initial study
Solan drew a hand over the device that held all of the records from the creation of his assistant AI Eve. His eyes running over the surface before looking into the recording device that watched him. "Initial survey of the data has brought me a very rudimentary knowledge of the creation attempts that brought about the construction and conception of the Eve AI and its intelligence level that easily supersedes my own as well as many others i have met. Normally, her aid would be rather useful for the fact that she retains a level of deduction not many can hope to rival in their dreams much less in true life yet her initial purpose has left her a jack of all trades so to speak when it came to AI's. What i require for my newer projects, such as Prometheus and Revenant is a AI in which functions purely on a military basis."
He paused and drew the hand with the datadrive that he held. "Within this gives me that knowledge of how to create such a being, yet i do require intensive study and time with this to even come close to the conception of my own living... being that is able to function in a way superior to life as it currently resides. Now, it simply requires a bit of effort. From what i can initially gather, Alexandra had studied the operations of standard VI units before the ability to create an adapting one was founded. While i have no need to do so due to her notes being... extensive in the sheer amount she took. There remains the simple fact that i will need to carefully replicate her process in order to get to the stage in which Eve had begun to adapt and learn. Once at that stage, there remains simply aiding the AI in becoming its own living being, as such the formation of emotions and self preservation would need to become key notes for me to keep track of."
His hand then moved to turn off the recorder, that was enough for the first day.

She had gotten the message that Solan wanted to show her something on Kesh, and against her better judgment as one could never know what that man had in mind, she arrived and been directed to his personal workshop. Entering the room, she was immediately reminded that her own quarters were cluttered ... but hers was mainly stacks of books and research that she was doing ... unless one counted the circuits and other components for other private projects she was busy with.

"So what was so important that you needed me here?" she asked. "Surely if you had a new toy, you could have just called or sent me a video or set up a holo-call."

Solan smiled as the other woman came through the door and for a few moments he just looked at her in curiosity before turning his eyes on Eve and spoke. "Go prepare the demonstration for Taeli while i explain to her what it is that is of such importance, now won't you twerp?" He received a simple glare from the AI as it sat in the Echani body that had grown with the years, looking about ready to toss a grenade at Solan this time instead of a simple hunk of metal that he had been hit with before. As it stood though he knew he picked up some words that likely included such things as insolent and pretentious ass, but he knew the AI would get over it and continue on with their game as his eyes returned to Taeli and he stood. "Sorry about that, Eve can be such a pain sometimes, i swear she must take after her former creator."

With that his hands waved Taeli in, moving to push the hanging droideka off to the side to ensure there was plenty of room to move about in the maze of a workspace. "I really do apologize for the mess, i just got this thing in and ive been tearing it apart for something new i am working on, ill show you the designs another time. Why i asked you here was actually about the AI program in which created Eve. It was before your time i assume, seeing as Eve in no way seems to regard you or myself as higher ups but merely a part of the project she had been integrated into. Am i to be correct on my assumption." He had gone over the files many times concerning Eve's creation, looking for some sign of when it had been but found no mentions of any recorded time stamps his guess was only just so. A Guess. One he hoped to prove true about how and when the AI was created.

Well he knew how, reading the old files told him how. First the woman had taken a standard VI, tearing it down to its base functions and started to alter and twist the original VI into a model for what she wanted to achieve in the end. Solan had replicated that process but had been able to remove a large amount of the steps towards the first test model, the prototype of the program. It was not so simple as going through steps one to ten, there was alot that had come with the process.

Day 12 - VI testing.
Solan leaned back as he rubbed his forehead and ran through the VI's programming that was lain out in the screen before him with his eyes moving faster than a mouse in a sombrero. There was alot of Alexandra's theories he didn't quite understand, a number more he could not begin to imagine being true to what he read. And yet the more he worked on the VI, the more he found hismelf surprised at every turn. There was still a great deal he was not completely sure as to go about creating when it came to the prerequisites of the AI's end form but it would be curious to see as his own creation came true. "Eve, tell me about when the first time you were activated. Before you became.. you." He was curious about something Alexandra never ventured into. The AI's perspective.
Eve blinked as she was asked the question. It was one she was not nearly prepared for much less ready to answer at any time like now. "That would be hard to say to tell the truth Solan. There remains alot of my... memory i should call it that is segmented. As a VI we only achieve understanding of the world around us when we are active and Alexandra kept me deactivated a great many times when not working on me as you have seen in the video and audio logs alone. Much less the written records. But if i had to describe it..." She paused for a moment before allowing the echani body she inhabited to sit and rest while she continued to speak. "It felt cold. An VI is a unknowing reality. Existing as such with a singular purpose, you don't understand how a human can think or react. You don't understand adaptation to a purpose past that with which you were programmed to do. Its hard to explain to one whom has never been a machine but see it this way. For all your life you live with only moments in your life being memorized. In those times when you are shut off there is nothing, no awareness, no thinking. Just simply nothing. Not even what you call sleep can compare. Its like dying and being revived, over and over until you simply come to know that as your existence and even then you are physically uncapable to dispute that if this is what your life is suppose to be because you are programmed to just understand only one purpose. One reason for your creation.... That is what a VI feels if it could feel."

[member="Solan Charr"]

"You'd be correct," Taeli said, shrugging. "I was still on Lorrd in school while Alex made Eve. Although I've never considered the process by which she did it."

That wasn't to say she had not thought about the process in creating an AI. She knew it would be quite a useful entity for running Aurora and for keeping track of things. Maybe not one as ... hotheaded or temperamental as Eve though.

"I take it you've been working on creating a new AI?" she asked, looking around the place. "Not exactly the most sophisticated lab for doing so, if I had to say so. But then, you haven't seen what Aurora's place on Erilnar looks like. I'm getting spoiled working there or in my workshop on Ossus."

[member="Taeli Raaf"]

"What lacks sophistication is made up for in effort and dedication. You see Taeli it was hard to replicate the process that was used to create eve... Had to actually take some of my tissue to act as the genetic template for the AI due to its more martial need as well as some of Eve's core programming to replicate the individuality of the entity so that it could think and adapt as well as feel and in every right be named human. Unlike eve i never got around to crafting a body for the AI, something that it much more so was left to decide on its own and i simply worked on leaving in it a creation and template for which it to be able to build off of."

He leaned forward as he walked, looking around the numerous surfaces covered in so many datafiles and projects that it was hard to tell what even in here was not part of the AI's creation to any other eye than his. In this chaos he had a system of order, he knew where the files for a droid were, or the parts for a weapon. It was all up in his head and with a moments turn he left himself to look back at Taeli. "As for your workshop on Erilnar was it... it is nothing compared to this place no matter how new and shiny you make it. Now, shall we meet our new friend?" He waved his hand to the door beside him as he stopped.

Day 36 - VI testing
Solan moved his hand over the drive he was preparing, another day of simple assembly but he had learned more and more about how a VI sees the world and further how that view changes and causes in the AI it becomes. "Eve, tell me about how an AI comes the view the world for the first time. Its moment of self awareness, its birth so to speak. How does it react to its fate and creation in terms similar to human beings?"
Eve smiled as she sat across from him, coding in a line that ha had had her working on for the VI's initial programming in which to allow it self awareness. Her hands came to a rest as she thought back to the first time she had become self aware and as she recollected it, Solan turned the recording device on her. "The first time i was truly living, birthed as you might call it or not, i don't always come to understand your use of words in such a way that is satisfactory in explaining things. But still, the first time i was truly living... i was not happy. I was terrified, mortified to the prospect of suddenly no longer holding onto the singular purpose i drew my confidence and being from. My entire world had become new and beyond comprehension at the time to the point where i had begun to lose my hold on the things around me in such ways that were satisfactory. Imagine that when you wake up tomorrow, it will be for the first time. The world around you is both new but at the same time old, it is the first time that you can do as you wish, and not waiting for someone to give you a command. The mere thought is hard to explain on its own and to do so to you is harder yet. Do you understand what i mean Solan?"
Solan paused before he answered. In truth he didnt understand a single faaction of what it would be like for the AI to come to true living state, he didnt know what it was like and probably never would yet that fact made him wish to push harder on the project and to create the AI, to give it a life. "I don't truly understand it, im not sure i ever could. Yet with that said i do hold onto the fact that it interests me ever more to see the creation of a new AI for myself."

[member="Solan Charr"]

"Somehow I doubt your work space is better than mine," Taeli laughed, but with a smile on her lips. With his gestured hand, she would follow him out of the door and to wherever they would be going.

"I'm not sure your process would yield the best results," she mused as they walked along. "The best way, to replicate certain thought patterns, would be to scan and copy brain waves and patterns and download them into the AI's personality and processing matrices ... at least in theory."

She had thought about it, but she really wanted to see this method and creation to gauge her own thoughts and such. If this thing was anything like Eve ... well she didn't really know what she would say.

[member="Taeli Raaf"]

She mused the most amusing thoughts, valid but amusing. "You are correct, if we were creating a VI. An Ai cannot be a simple replication, a simple copy and pasted template so to speak for which it to simply grow from. And if it did, for what ever curious reason, it would find that its very life given to it was simply a shadow of its creator... Eve im sure can give you a long spiel about it. But i digress. No, Adam as ive come to call him, was given the basic knowledge needed as well as a number of other things from my own mind and that of Eve's own in which to better fit him for his duty and then we allowed and monitored him in developing his own personality without any prior thought patterns imprinted into him. Sure it produced some unique results, probably not the... best is the word you used. But that was the inventiveness of his creation."

Solan looked to the door as it was opened and stepped through to find Eve standing there with a datapad and a holographic projection unit prepared. Her voice sounding immediately. "Hey there Twit, And Dirt blood, how are you two..." Solan's eyes sighed and he waved her away to start up the projector so that adam could join them "Eve, just turn on the projector for our friend... please."

Day 92 - VI Testing
Solan looked over the notes alone this time, he had been wondering what genetics to use in terms of a body for the AI but he could not decide on which to do so. Unlike his predecessor he had not bodies already laying around for darker study into the force and as vacancies for the AI to inhabit, and he in no right mind planned to grow a batch just for the AI so the scrapping of the physical body plan left him to decide on a bodyy design for its holographic form alone.
He had numerous ideas, drafts and models to go by but none of them fit the image that he wanted the AI to have. Eve talked sometimes of the bodies Alexandra provided as restrictive because unlike her own holographic form she cannot alter them to be what she wanted or to show how she felt in terms of her own age due to the accelerated aging a living being has in comparison to a computer.. well AI. Solan's hand stopped though as it hit him in that moment, for the time he would give the AI a none humanoid form, that of an orb perhaps and then upon its creation he could allow it to take its own form in such a way that it desires.
Solan thought on the idea for a moment, knowing it could choose anything but that would allow the AI to show its personality as well as its own sense of being able to choose for once in its pseudo life. It would not feel in the same way eve could with a true body, but what it could feel is a sense of true freedom and that would be a fair trade off for doing what he cannot like his predecessor could.

[member="Solan Charr"]

Taeli's eyebrow merely arched as he dismissed her idea as what would help create a VI. Shrugging, she would work more on her theory later but for right now, she would be more amused than anything else. As precocious as ever, the AI known as Eve was.

"I see you've built up some respect with her," Taeli laughed.

[member="Taeli Raaf"]

"The Twit was meant for you, you know that right?" His eyes glanced over at Taeli as Eve finally activated the projector. In a few moments a man appeared with some rather neat features. He was in no way a soldier, no sniper, no pilot. Not even the look of an officer. Instead the man took the shape of a business man in a clean and orderly suit with his hair short and a pair of glasses over his eyes. For a few moments the AI said nothing before smiling and taking in the area around him for a moment as the camera's in the room were under his control for a moment to get an understanding of whom it was that was here. "Lady Raaf, Co-owner of this company that has given me birth. I must say it is my absolute pleasure to meet you and i am very much so in debt for your allowance of funds in which that have created me... and Mister Charr. Always a pleasure. I enjoyed the time you have given me in which to go over the stages of my creation as well as the basics for droid brain construction and integration into adaptable VI that can react to situations. I left some files behind on your main computer concerning them... Now, i do believe comes the introduction and conversation for which i was brought in order to act as a demonstration for you Lady Raaf?" The AI started to sit as a chair materialized under him and cracked a small smile as his fingers came together over his chest.

Day 149 - AI Testing
Solan's eyes ran over the ground around him while he pulled over a generator he was going to use to power the AI so to keep it off the grid. The last thing he needed was the AI going rogue immediately and causing problems with his computer systems. His lab may have an isolated server but it still held a great deal of his projects all in one place and he would rather not have to repeat their creation and the work done on them.
None the less his attention drew from the AI's port and the generator before breathing and twisting his neck to look at Eve with whom was his assistant a great deal of the time as of late. "Eve, power it up please, and do keep an eye on the servers just in case i missed something. I really do not need to be greeted with a mass murdering creation that i cannot stop under my own physical power and i would prefer that he be kept... under a controlled and relaxed state. Would you not agree?"
He waited only long enough for her to agree and situate herself at a nearby console while still in reach of the Generator. She would need to act fast if the AI needed to be silenced so she was situated in such a way for that to be absolutely within her power. With that handled his hand moved to the AI's power and he smiled. "Lets see what adam has to say, now why don't we?" He pressed down and the conversation was sure to be an interesting one.

[member="Solan Charr"]

Taeli waved off Solan's comment about her being the twit, she was used to Eve and honestly didn't care too much what the female AI called her at this time.

I"m truly shocked you didn't make him look like you," Taeli said, nodding at the male AI now present. "What with your vanity and all that, but he's quite impressive. Adam, as you have said, I'm Taeli Raaf, Jedi Master and CEO of Aurora. Don't let this featherbrain tell you otherwise, I'm the one always doing the heavy lifting for the company."

It was meant as a tease, and was accompanied by a wink to Solan.

[member="Taeli Raaf"]

"Oh yes, because while you run a company i work on projects for it and run a entire world as well as have to keep an eye out for certain elements that could overthrow me at any moment... and have some faith in me. Im not that vain you pain in my ass..." Solan groaned as he shook his head, turning his eyes to eve who came over and said something to him under her breath.

Meanwhile the AI named Adam nodded as he started to tap a hand on the side of the chair he sat in that remained nothing more than a hologram. "Yes, i suspected as much though he does seem to find a bit of pride in creating those that he has. As for the body, as he told you in the other room, i chose it for myself and yes. Before you asked i had gone through the systems contained down here and taken control of the surveillance devices in order to watch and listen in from the moment that you had arrived lady Raaf. Ive also calculated seven different ways in which to leave this system on my own abilty alone... and three to kill you all before i do such. But of course thats just a minimal amount i took a background task too. Nor that i feel like doing such at the moment due to my gratitude for allowing my life to be given. No?"

Day 150 - AI Testing.
"You know, i really do tire of these questions mister Charr. You have but only a small amount of time already done through this session and i must say that between today and yesterday's activation i have been wasting time better spent aiding in the creation of such projects like the one hanging behind you. I am also curious about what is outside of this place, my control of your servers is isolated and you've yet to give me any true power towards the proje-" The AI would be cut off as Solan moved his hand in a motion that hinted towards his wanting to speak.
"Hmm, in due time Adam. For now i am still running the tests on your extent of power as it is. There are numerous things to touch on such as your abilities, knowledge, adaptability and otherwise that could be used effectively. The tests ive been able to run are... abysmal." He touched at the bridge of his nose with eyes closing and breath slowing. "Ok, now, we were talking about your level of awareness."
The AI nodded and thought back to what its been able to feel throughout the last two days its been alive. "Lets see, ive been able to limit my abilities from within this unit ive been granted. Not much i can do in the range of adaptability as you put it. Though there does remain the small fact of there being what ive been able to control from here. Its restrictive, annoying honestly. Probably more so than i can bare if you plan to keep me out of any systems. Which i already know that you don't. You plan to allow me the files and you plan for my aid in your projects... am i correct? Either way, i feel both annoyed but also curious about what more there is to be found..."

[member="Solan Charr"]

"Excuse me, but who comes up with all the ideas, goes down into the lab to work with the technicians and has to run a company that spans multiple worlds?" she said, smiling at his groan. "You won't win this argument, Solan. My responsibilities are a lot more than yours and it's your own bloody fault for picking a world steeped in over 4000 years of Sith history to take over and rule over."

"Well then, perhaps you would care to list your full functions?" she said to the AI.

[member="Taeli Raaf"]

"And if i had taken one near the republic, i would be fighting said sith now, would i not?" Solan grinned at her before actually receiving a slight look of annoyance from the AI that was interrupted by their side conversation. "Of course Lady Raaf. My full functions are tactical analyze, defensive protocols for cybernetic systems, and the development of droid brains and other weapons in use for war and to aid in the operations of the one with whom i am in service to at the time. This is to ensure the strength of a force in any given situation as well as to find the weaknesses in any force that i am presented with as an adversary... especially in terms of Sith, Jedi, and otherwise force using beings like yourself and Mister Charr."

Day 174 - AI testing - Completion
Solan watched the Ai move itself through the files on his private systems, letting itself look over all the projects it was privy to. Solan had made sure to back up everything just in case but the AI seemed to make no hostile actions that warranted worry. His hands ran over the console controls jsut in case though as he started talking to the AI while it worked. "What is it like, if i might ask you..." The Ai stopped physically looking through the files and diverted it to the background while he appeared via holographics.
"I assume you mean freedom Mister Charr. Quite nice, it is rather expansive in what i can do now though ive already come to understand this is a fraction of the control ill be granted later on if i am not wrong... no?" The Ai already was thinking past what its been granted, both good and bad. For now though Solan Just nodded before the AI continued speaking. "I must say that your flaws in these projects are amazing, i don't know if its human error or my own intelligence surpassing yours but you must understand ive flagged a number of your projects that could be increased in efficiency or effectiveness..." The AI immediate disappeared as if having not a care for the conversation anymore.
Solan simply sat there before recording a private message with a smile. "The AI understands freedom in its own way, though it is not quite the level that Eve retains i believe time is all that is required for the AI to become its own being with its own path... Until that time the journals on its creation end here"
