Fans! Before the days of air conditioning, people used these babies to cool themselves down in the summertime heat. At some point somebody thought "hey, wouldn't it be cool if I decorated these things, made them look a little nicer?" Then another person decided to make a whole language based on how people hold their fan or motion with it. And from there people just can't seem to stop making their fans fancier and fancier, until one day somebody decided to make a fan that was also a sword and a shield.
Ishani received this bladed fan as a gift from a mysterious benefactor. The package was accompanied by a note which said simply: "Found this among some old things collecting dust. Atrisian made. Hope you can get some use out of it. - The Witch Queen of Ambria"
Now who the devil was the Witch Queen of Ambria? Ishani had no clue. The package had no traps, and the bladed fan was nice enough, so Ishani accepted the proverbial gift horse without looking it in the mouth. After all, it is a nice fan.
