Private When Hope Eclipses Guilt

The sea was calmer here than it had any right to be. From the window of the small house overlooking Rugosa's endless blue horizon, I watched the tide advance and retreat against the pale shoreline with a patience that only nature seemed capable of possessing. Every wave surrendered itself willingly before returning again moments later; as though failure had never frightened it in the first place.

I envied that.

A mug of tea rested forgotten between my hands, it's warmth slowly fading while morning sunlight spilled across the wooden floor. Somewhere outside, seabirds argued over something I could neither see nor understand. The little biomass creature Mr. Usher had insisted I keep fluttered lazily between the rafters before eventually deciding that the windowsill offered a better vantage point than that of my shoulder. "You've become rather fond of this place," I murmured.

It answered with an inquisitive chirp.

"So have I." That admission surprised me. Rugosa asked remarkably little of anyone. There were no laboratories demanding impossible breakthroughs. No board meetings. No bounty hunters peering suspiciously through crowded streets. No constant need to measure every conversation for hidden motives. It was simply quiet. I had almost forgotten what quiet sounded like. Almost. Because silence had an unfortunate habit of making room for memory.

My thoughts drifted, as they so often did, toward New Cov. Toward home. I wondered what my Mother and Father were doing today. Whether the streets still looked the same. Whether the old market still opened each morning beneath foreign banners instead of our own. Whether children who had been born after the occupation even knew what independence had looked like. I hoped that they did. Yet I feared that they didn't.

A knot settled quietly within my chest. There were mornings when every sensible part of me wanted to board the first transport home. To stand beside my family. To do something; anything, other than wait. But wanting and helping had become two very different things. If I returned to New Cov now; I would accomplish nothing beyond placing another target inside occupied territory.

The resistance needed allies, resources and political support. The sort of assistance that could only be gathered beyond New Cov's borders. That was my responsibility now. I reminded myself of it every day. But it did not make the waiting any easier.

My gaze remained fixed upon the horizon, though I was no longer seeing the ocean. Years ago, I had convinced myself that my future belonged among research facilities and corporate laboratories. I had believed that if I worked hard enough, discovered enough, accomplished enough, then somehow it would all benefit my people in the end.

But instead.... I had been absent when my world needed every voice it could find. I had chosen my career, and New Cov had paid the price. No matter how many people insisted the occupation had not been my fault, some part of me refused to believe them. Regret was rarely interested in fairness. It cared only for possibilities. For all of the things that might have happened differently if only one choice had changed.

I took a slow sip of tea that had long since grown lukewarm. "I won't make that mistake again," I whispered to the empty room. The words were not spoken as a promise to anyone else. Only to myself.

Outside, another wave rolled gently onto the shore before retreating once more, both patient and persistent. Waiting for it's moment to return. Just like me...

The blue and white hue of the lights illuminated the chamber, flawlessly clean walls with gilded decorations surrounded the gathering on three sides, on the fourth were large viewports opening to the Spire's enclosed cityscape, bright and busy. In the center of the room was a large table, a dozen and more chairs arranged around it and all were occupied. Officers in white and red uniforms sat amongst Knights in golden, white and black armour, at the head the massive figure of Aurelian presided over the council meeting.

Now the meeting was just being concluded, figures raised one after the other to leave when one of the aides moved forward and handed a communique to the Hegemon, his eyes ran over the datapad for a moment before he entered the frequency into the controls of the table.

"Miss Terallo, it has been some time. I have received your message. What need do you have of me?"

His voice was slow rolling thunder, calm and yet no less a force of nature. The holo showed him to her, seated in his heavy plate armour, the short cut hair and harsh contours of his face mildly distorted by the projection. Sometimes the holo flickered as it picked up figures passing behind him.

The holoprojector shimmered briefly before stabilizing. For a moment I simply regarded the towering figure before me. It had been some time since our paths had last crossed. The years had changed many things throughout the galaxy. Apparently they had not diminished his presence.

"Mister Aurelian." I inclined my head to him politely. "Thank you for responding."

The little biomass creature had abandoned the windowsill the moment the hologram appeared, circling once overhead before settling upon the back of a nearby chair. It's curious eyes watched the projection with far more interest than seemed reasonable.

"I hope that I am not interrupting anything too important. Although judging by your surroundings, I suspect I already have." My smile faded again, replaced by quieter purpose. "My request is somewhat unusual." I folded my hands together, considering my words carefully before continuing. "There is a world under foreign occupation." I left it there. No name. No coordinates. No identifying details. These transmissions can always be traced, and I am well aware of that fact. "I have no intention of discussing it's identity until I better understand who is willing to stand beside it." My expression remained composed, though there was unmistakable sincerity beneath it. "The people there deserve the opportunity to determine their own future, and their own economy. Whether they ultimately succeed or fail should be decided by their own choices; not because another government believes it has a greater claim to their home."

For a brief moment my eyes drifted toward the ocean beyond the window before returning to him. "I am attempting to gather support beyond it's borders. Political support where possible. Humanitarian assistance where appropriate. Economic support in the trading of resources. And, should events eventually require it..." I paused briefly. "...friends." That word felt more accurate than allies.

"I am trying very hard not to repeat old mistakes." A quiet breath escaped me as I made sure to maintain the emotional barriers that I often display in public. "I have spent too many years believing that my responsibilities existed only inside laboratories. And that assumption proved costly."

My attention settled fully upon Aurelian once more. "I remember you as someone who understood that strength can be measured by more than conquest." My compliment was genuine, though cautiously offered. "So before I ask for anything specific from you..." I tilted my head ever so slightly. "...I just wanted to know whether the cause of a people seeking to reclaim their own home is one that interests you at all. I would rather hear an honest 'no' now than build plans upon uncertain promises."

"Your worry is unwarranted." He simply stated and then listened.

From what he knew about her, he knew what world she was talking about, but it made him not interrupt her. She spoke about independence, self-determination and he was getting curious as to where this conversation would lead them. The room around him had cleared by now and he was the only one left, leaning back in his massive chair and observing.

"Your aspirations are admirable and with the exploits and knowledge you have in certain areas, I can find myself in support of your goal. Yet it comes with a clear and present warning: you are entering a theater which is not dictated by morales, values and honour. Friends, allies, associates, partners of any sort, will seek their own advancement, always. You lack any hard power to counter such - maybe that is how you wish to handle it, but unless you are willing to be handled, stride carefully and choose meticulously."

It was a cold, calculated delivery. It was genuine advice given freely for without her research some of the advances he made would not have been possible, Project Doomgiver would have failed. If she died, he would not shed a tear, if her world burnt, it was just one among many, Aurelian did not feel attachment, simply a reciprocity in courtesy.

"I am interested in continuing this conversation, whether it is for personal favour or a sense of liberty, is for you to judge."

I remained silent for several moments after he finished speaking.

Beyond the window, another wave broke gently upon Rugosa's shore before retreating once more. It was strange how peaceful the ocean remained while conversations elsewhere concerned occupations, alliances, and the price of reclaiming worlds.

At length, I lowered my eyes briefly before looking back toward the hologram. "I don't think that my aspirations are admirable." The words escaped me quietly. "I think that they are overdue."

I let a faint and thoughtful silence settled between us for a moment as I calculated his words, much in the same way that I calculated any problem in my laboratories. "I understand your warning." And I did. Perhaps moreso than I had wished. "There was a time when I believed that competence was enough." My hands rested loosely together upon the table before me. "That if I simply produced something valuable; people would naturally use it responsibly." A small smile appeared, though it carried little warmth. "Reality has proved to be considerably more ambitious than I was."

My gaze drifted toward the sea again. "I know that everyone will have their own interests." That admission was surprisingly easy for me to make. "I have spent enough years around governments and corporations to stop expecting otherwise." When I looked back to him, there was no disappointment in my expression. "That doesn't trouble me as much as it once would have. What troubles me more is doing nothing. If I wait for perfect allies...for people whose motives are completely selfless..." I shook my head gently. "...then the people that I'm trying to help may spend generations waiting with me."

My voice remained calm, fluctuating as little as my movements did. "Freedom has never been inexpensive." We both knew that I wasn't speaking only of credits. "I would be naïve to believe otherwise."

For just a moment, my expression softened. "I also know that people will die." It was the first time I had allowed myself to say the thought aloud. "And I hate that."

The little biomass creature chirped quietly from its perch, as though objecting to the conversation itself.

"But occupation extracts it's own cost." My eyes lowered briefly. "Only...more slowly." When they lifted again, there was a steadiness to them that had not existed a few years earlier. "I cannot promise that every decision I make will be the correct one." That much, I had already learned. I was not perfect. But then who really was? "But I can promise that I will choose them carefully."

I gave him a faint smile. "You advised me to choose meticulously." I inclined my head ever so slightly. "I believe that that's the first piece of advice that I've received in a long time that doesn't ask me to become someone else. So..." I folded my hands once more. "If you're still willing to continue this conversation, then perhaps we should begin with the question neither of us has asked yet." I met his holographic gaze and held it steadfast. "What would you want in return?"

Aurelian did not understand how or why she developed, what made her comprehend the actual workings of the Galaxy only know. It was beyond him why a gifted individual such as Terallo needed rude awakenings to see that blood and sweat were the only constants, that conflict and violence was perpetual. But he also did not care. He heard her words and he acknowledged that she seemed to understand now.

"Admirable or not, you have aspirations and a goal. Set your mind and heart to that purpose and they will be yours or your demise." It was useless to dwell on regret or fear.

"Freedom is a goal only naivety will conjure. Nobody of us is truly free or ever will be. Do not hate the price it seemingly bears, hate yourself for not realising it earlier and your adversary for making it necessary."

He visibly ran his fingers across the keyboard as if he was looking up some data while the decisive question was up in the air. His focus did not seem to shift from her but it took a few moments before the Master of Zakuul responded. "Free investment opportunities, a joint research team and a trade agreement. That is the foundation for any kind of support, be it political, economic or logistical. For every further physical investment, we will expand on them."

For several moments, I said nothing. His words lingered in the quiet of the room long after he had finished speaking. Hate yourself for not realising it earlier... A faint smile touched my lips. "I already have. I have spent a very long time believing that if I worked hard enough...if I solved enough problems...then somehow the galaxy would become a slightly better place." My gaze then drifted briefly toward the ocean beyond the window. "I never stopped to ask who would decide how those solutions were used." The answer had found me regardless. "I was naïve." That word came more easily than it once would have.

"When you spend most of your life on an isolated world, then disappear into laboratories for years afterward..." I gave a small shrug. "...you learn many things about biology and remarkably little about galactic politics." A quiet breath escaped me. "There were people who understood that." I thought back to contracts I had signed without truly appreciating the leverage they created. Meetings where ambition had sounded remarkably similar to partnership. Executives who had praised my work while quietly ensuring it served interests far removed from my own. "I was useful." The realization no longer stung as sharply as it once had. "And I allowed myself to mistake usefulness for respect."

The little biomass creature fluttered down onto the table, tilting its head toward the hologram before looking back at me.

Absently, I scratched beneath it's chin. When my attention returned to Aurelian, there was a steadiness to my expression. "What you've asked for..." I considered each point individually. "Investment strengthens both parties. Trade creates interdependence that benefits everyone when conducted fairly. And joint research is something that I understand considerably better than diplomacy. So, in principle I find your proposal entirely reasonable."

Then my expression grew thoughtful again. "There is only one condition that matters to me." My words were calm, but carried with them a quiet conviction. "The world that I am trying to help cannot exchange one form of dependence for another." I met his gaze. "If we build something together, it must remain a partnership. Not ownership. Not obligation. An investment should strengthen sovereignty, not replace it."

For a moment, I looked once more toward the distant sea. "I've already watched one home surrender too much of itself while believing it was securing it's future." My eyes returned to his. "I have no intention of allowing history to repeat itself." I folded my hands together once more. So if we can agree on that principle then I believe that we're beginning this conversation on the right foundation."

Aurelian remained silent. He allowed her to speak, to explore her own thoughts of negligence and regret without interfering or commenting. It was a sentiment he still did not understand, or rather, did not understand anymore. When he was young, when he had ideals and a leader to follow, it was a different matter. He had family, patriotism and a supreme purpose. He was able to feel and emphasize, sympathise. It had been killed. Taken root and stem and ripped out.

Now he was someone different, something different. And her lamenting and caution touched him not.

"I have no interest in one of your core-worlds, holding or governing it requires resources I currently have not to spare. However I have an interest in increasing prosperity long-term, abusing the trade partner of such agreement would have short term benefits only. And holding your world would further deteriorate my rate of gain."

"Yet we bleed the hour with idle talk. To know what I am willing to offer and more importantly, to know what I can potentially gain is determining my level of involvement. If you intend to achieve this through your leadership, you must have planned its steps. For this conversation to continue, I require more information."

I found myself smiling, though only faintly. "You are notwrong," I admitted. "I have been speaking in principles when what you require are plans."

For a moment I folded my hands together in an effort to refrain myselfvfrom fidgeting, while also considering how much to reveal. There was no point asking for meaningful support while hiding everything that made such support possible.

"I should begin by saying that I do not intend to lead the liberation itself. The people already fighting there have leaders. They know the terrain, the population, the resistance cells, and the realities of living under occupation far better than I ever could from the outside. My parents are among those coordinating efforts on the ground." Saying it aloud brought an unexpected measure of reassurance to me. "I trust their judgement far more than my own when it comes to the planet itself."

I glanced briefly toward the ocean before continuing. "My role exists beyond it's borders." The words came more easily to me once I had finally defined them. "I intend to coordinate the things they cannot easily obtain while isolated. Political recognition where possible. Financial backing. Humanitarian aid. Trade partners prepared to invest once the occupation ends. Secure supply lines for medicine, equipment, communications and whatever else the resistance determines it needs. And if the conflict reaches the point where liberation becomes militarily achievable..." My voice grew quieter. "...then I intend to ensure that they are not standing alone."

I looked back toward Aurelian's projection. "New Cov's population centers are protected beneath environmental domes. They were designed to preserve life; not withstand a liberation campaign." I allowed myself a small, rueful smile. "Ironically, that makes them remarkably defensible." My fingers rested lightly against the tabletop. "A direct assault would almost certainly fail. The practical approach would be to support the resistance already inside the domes while any external assistance entered through concealed access tunnels beneath the surrounding jungles." I shook my head slightly. "The jungles themselves are as dangerous as any army. Few people unfamiliar with them survive for long."

The biomass creature chirped softly beside me, as though punctuating the thought.

"So yes...." I said at last. "There is a plan. Or perhaps more accurately, the beginnings of one. It will evolve with every conversation that I have. I have no illusion that I can accomplish this alone. Quite the opposite." A faint smile returned. "Every discussion like this changes the plan slightly. Every person brings capabilities, limitations and interests that have to be accounted for." My expression then settled into it's familiar calm. "You asked me what you stand to gain. That depends entirely upon how involved you choose to become. At present, I'm speaking with independent organizations and individuals whose interests are very different from one another." I tilted my head slightly. "My task is to discover where those interests overlap without allowing New Cov to become someone's prize. So I suspect," I added with quiet amusement, "that this is the first research project that I've ever undertaken where the variables argue back."

"You are addressing matters of military significance, of importance to a ground campaign, before the space is secured, before supplies are gathered, before the involvement of others parties is understood. However I agree with your assessment and commend you for pointing out one of the few constants of this proposal that do not change with involvement with more or less players."

His hands came up to fold just below his chin as he considered.

"I will not offer personal consultation or advice, my time is better spent elsewhere. In exchange for the aforementioned agreements about trade, investments and research, I will offer a single officer of my Indomitus Legion as an advisor, logistical units to transport supplies which can include: generators, prefab buildings, ration packs, energy cells, weapons and armour."

He paused a moment.

"The next level of support will be a warship with escorts, a Banner of my Knights supported by droid forces. This will only be granted under the guarantee that all of your Force related research will be made available to me and that this Banner will be allowed an in system garrison under the mandate of it being a supply hub and base of operations, not having any jurisdiction on matters of New Cov, no permit to enter civilisation centers and vice versa. It becomes sovereign ground of the Hegemony but will act in the defence of New Cov should outside forces seek to impose their will on your government."

Aurelian's flickering gaze looked at her.

"These are my terms."

Silence settled between us. It was not an uncomfortable silence, but a measured one. The sort of silence that accompanies decisions whose consequences refuse to remain neatly contained.

I lowered my eyes to the table, watching my fingers rest motionless against the polished wood. My research. For years it had been everything. My life's work. The thing that had cost me friendships, my career, my reputation, and nearly my life. I thought back to another conversation, and of another promise. I won't sell it. The words returned to me with uncomfortable clarity. I had meant them, and I still did...

Somewhere outside, the waves continued their endless conversation with Rugosa's shore; blissfully unaware that promises made years apart had finally collided.

When had everything become so complicated?Or perhaps it had always been this complicated, and I had simply been fortunate enough not to notice?

A slow breath escaped me. "There is someone..." I said quietly, more to myself than to Aurelian. "Someone that I had once promised I would never trade this research away." I lifted my eyes again to him. "I made that promise because I believed that the research itself was the thing that needed protecting." My voice remained steady, though softer than before. "I don't believe that anymore." I looked back towards the ocean beyond the window. "I think the people that it was always supposed to serve deserve that protection more." That admission hurt far more than I had expected. Because it wasn't simply a negotiation anymore. It was accepting that the center of my life had shifted. For years I had measured every decision against my work. And now I measured my work against New Cov.

My gaze returned to Aurelian. "I won't pretend that this is an easy decision." A faint smile appeared, carrying little joy along with it. "I dislike breaking promises." It was more than that; far deeper than that. I disliked becoming someone capable of doing so. It made me feel as though I was becoming someone else. Again. "But I also promised myself something else. That I would never again choose my ambitions over my home." That promise had been born from regret. But this one would be born from sacrifice.

"If honoring one promise requires me to break the other, then I choose my people." I let the words settle. "If your involvement reaches the military level that you've described..." I continued carefully, the scientist in me reasserting itself, "...then the entirety of my Force-related research will become available to you under the terms of our joint research agreement." I tilted my head slightly. "But understand this. I am not giving it to purchase freedom. I am giving it because I believe that New Cov's freedom is worth more than anything that I have ever discovered."

Aurelian lowered his hands again, a small nod followed.

"With my side of this interaction clear, it is upon you. Find your allies, your support and whatever else you are seeking. Once you are ready to invest into the liberation of your homeworld, I am ready to hold up my end of this agreement."

Through her research, which he had only been in parts privy to, he would have the means to finalise Project Doomgiver and finally offer parity to the miserable forces of the Sith and Jedi. It was an opportunity far too great to ignore. It was an opportunity he was willing to help make happen by any means necessary. Aurelian was ready to sacrifice a great many things, manpower and resources, to achieve it, even if his grey eyes remained cold.

"Once you give the signal, I will ready the first echelon of support and one of my officers will contact you to facilitate everything else. He will be your point of contact. Ensure that your leadership in this operation is clear and present, my Knights will join your fight - not someone else's."

His voice echoed the tone of conclusion. "Unless you have anything else to add, I will conclude this meeting."

Leadership. It was a word I had spent years quietly avoiding. Scientists were rarely meant to stand at the center of wars. We were supposed to solve problems in laboratories, publish findings, and leave the difficult decisions to people better suited for them. I had spent long enough believing that.

"I understand." The words were simple, but they carried more weight than I cared to admit. "My place has never been among soldiers." I offered a small, almost apologetic smile. "Nor do I imagine those already fighting on my world would appreciate someone arriving from off-world and attempting to command them." My gaze drifted briefly toward the ocean beyond the window. "They already have leaders. My parents among them. They understand the resistance, the people, and the realities of occupation far better than I ever could."

When I looked back toward him, there was a quiet certainty that hadn't existed when this conversation had begun. "But someone has to unite everything beyond our borders." I folded my hands together. "The negotiations. The humanitarian aid. The investment. The trade agreements. The logistics. The military support.....It seems I've been trying to avoid calling that leadership." The realization felt strangely liberating. "So....I will accept responsibility for the off-world effort." It was not because I desired authority. Nor because I believed myself the most capable. But because scattered goodwill accomplished very little unless someone gathered it together.

"My responsibility will be to ensure that every commitment made to New Cov reaches the people who need it. The resistance will determine how best to fight for their home." I inclined my head respectfully. "And when that day comes...your Knights will know precisely who they're coordinating with."

The little biomass creature gave an inquisitive chirp from the tabletop, as though offering its own approval.

"I believe that we have an understanding." I rose from my chair, while smoothing an absent crease from my sleeve. "I have many conversations ahead of me." There were governments to persuade. Corporations to negotiate with. Scientists to recruit. Military commanders to convince. For the first time since leaving New Cov, the task no longer felt impossible. Only enormous.

"I won't squander the opportunity that you've offered." I met his gaze one final time. "When the time comes, you'll hear from me again." With another respectful inclination of my head, I reached toward the holoprojector's controls. "Until then; thank you, Mister Aurelian."

The transmission dissolved into shimmering light before fading entirely, leaving only the quiet rhythm of the sea beyond the window. I remained standing for a moment, staring at the empty projector. Then, almost without thinking, I reached for my datapad. The list of names waiting to be contacted had just grown one entry shorter. There was still so much to do. So many people to convince. And for the first time in years I finally felt as though I knew exactly where I belonged.
