Warden to the Rescue

Mal was dozing off at the table in the common area, a plate of something in front of her but not really holding her interest much. It was tasty to be sure, but since Narasa, Rusty and Sidara all had business to attend to elsewhere, they were a tad short handed on the Warden. She had just pulled a 20 hour stint on the bridge and she was desperately tired. Kairon was up front in the seat, and she had promised that as soon as they were back on Shaddaa, she would get help. She couldn't afford not to. They were ragged from the longer duty shifts. They were going to have to get extended shore leave to make up for it, which was fine. It was going to take her some time to find new crew as it was.

She might as well start looking for replacements too. Kairon had told her that the Quin was going to be ready soon. Mal wasn't exactly sure that she was ready for Kairon and the rest to be off. She liked them, they worked well and they knew she respected them and their work on her ship. The thought had occurred once or twice to ask them to just stay on, but she wouldn't. She could never ask Kairon to choose between the Quin and her and she certainly wasn't going to stick his crew into the middle of their relationship.

Complicated. Wasn't everything?

She had her head leaning on her hand, elbow propped on the table, heavy lidded eyes slowly closing as she listened to the drone of the ship sailing through the black abyss of space.

Kairon hummed a tune to himself as he tried to keep his eyes open. No good reading a book at the helm, that was a certain way to send himself off to sleep. Instead he had other ideas. Leaning back in the chair, he checked surreptitiously over his shoulder. There was no sign of Mal. Jarrick and the boy would be waking up soon, but they'd head to the galley to grab some food before starting their shifts. Kairon shifted his weight forwards and reached for the datapad wedged between two consoles. There was a quiet click as he connected the ear phones, but he only slipped the left into place. He swiped across the screen on his Holoflix account until he found the right show.

That dreadful theme started up in his ear. It was that god-awful soap set in the floating hospital. Moving pictures were good to keep the brain going for a little longer, and this way he'd finally find out what happened to Doctor Skiv and Nurse Tilde. He'd grumbled about the show the other evening and Mal had taken it to watch somewhere else. He was bloody well going to find out what happened, but would deny all knowledge afterwards.

His right ear was kept pointed at the doorway, just in case.
