STRENGTHS
  • Modular Facility - The Vulcan-class Station is designed as a large rectangular cage-like structure of multiple support struts that are equipped with tractor-beam arrays. These support struts can be retracted or extended to their greatest extent as required based on the size of the vessel that is currently being constructed within the primary drydock of the facility.
  • Heavily Defended - Due to the nature of the station and the need to protect the vessels that are often being constructed in its drydock; the station is heavily defended. Each station is protected by reinforced hull plating and redundant shield generators as well as point defense weaponry and anti-missile systems to protect against errant stellar debris or minimal threats to the station.
WEAKNESSES
  • Civilian Station - The Vulcan-class was not designed as a military installation and as such lacks the heavier militarized armaments that may be commonly found on similarly sized stations, platforms, or facilities.
  • Minimal Mobility - Due to the nature of the station being placed in a synchronized orbit around a planetary body, they are otherwise incapable of moving under their own power. Maneuverability is restricted to minor corrections to maintain its orbit as it lacks any substantial means to accelerate its speed or jump to hyperspace.
  • Modular Control Systems - Though capable of extending or retracting its support structure to accommodate varying sizes of Starships under construction; those systems are highly fragile and great care must be taken to ensure their continued operational capacity. In the event that these systems are damaged or otherwise prevented from operating properly, the station would be incapable of extending or retracting these structures, rendering the station, largely inoperable.
DESCRIPTION
With Aether Systems establishing itself as the premier Starshipwright of the Galactic Alliance, the company has taken the logical step forward in expanding its operational facilities and its manufacturing capabilities. With a need to keep up with the demand for increased production of Capital Ships, Starfighters, Bombers, and all manner of vessels in between, the company has developed the Vulcan-class Orbital Manufacturing Facility. These stations resemble a large cage-like structure consisting of multiple support struts and beams, each of which is equipped with a tractor-beam projector to hold a vessel under construction stationary in the primary dry dock of the station. The primary controls for these systems as well as the means to operate the modular control systems that can extend or retract the structure are located in two separate facilities along the dorsal and ventral sections of the station respectively.

The primary strength of the Vulcan-class Station comes from its modularity as seen via its capability to extend or retract based on the size of the vessel that is currently being constructed within its drydock. However, the station is limited in how far it can retract or extend and is incapable of retracting below five hundred meters, nor is it capable of extending beyond its maximum size of three thousand meters. Likewise, the systems that control the mechanisms that allow the station to retract or extend are highly fragile, and damage to the mechanism would otherwise prevent the station from operating properly, potentially rendering it inoperable as a whole. Ensuring that the vessels being produced in the station remained protected was a primary focus of the overall design, resulting in a station that was heavily defended with reinforced hull plating as well as a myriad of additional defensive systems.

However, it should be noted that the Vulcan-class Station is not a military installation, and as such, it follows the standard classification as a civilian station as seen in its lack of offensive armaments or ordnance. Additionally, due to its synchronized orbit and often stationary position, the station lacks the means to maneuver or accelerate beyond simple correctional maneuvers to maintain its orbit; with damage to its engine systems having the potential to knock the station out of orbit and crashing into the planet.

The future of Aether Systems is bright and the Vulcan-class Orbital Manufacturing Facility provides the company with another tool in its arsenal to continue to rapidly design and manufacture Starships for the Galactic Alliance.
