Zana Rukh must have been a resourceful woman, seeing as she was able to gift her apprentice an exceedingly rare Qixoni crystal. The crystal enhances Val's Force abilities, as well as making the blade of his saber stronger and sharper. However, the presence of the crystal causes the lightsaber to emanate the unmistakable aura of the Dark Side. Because of this, any Light Sider will be repelled by the weapon and unable to wield it.
Other modifications include a fencing emitter suited to parrying blade attacks and an ossus dueling lens to focus the blade. Val prefers to use the Force to deflect blaster fire and other long-range weaponry rather than his saber, which he reserves for fencing and duels.
