Update on the Rebellion thread - EDIT: and going major

Just wanted to toss some context on my little back-and-forth with Sanya. Basically, she's digging in her heels and trying every possible meta trick to make us the bad guys. So I'm letting her evacuate from Demonsgate to get her out of the thread, because the rest of the thread - the part that doesn't involve her - appears to be dang fun for a lot of people. So let's keep on having fun.

I assume we're all onboard with neutralizing the territory and staying minor? The Underground was always set up to be permanently minor, but if half the faction secretly wants to go major, I should probably know about it, lol.

Well I brought all types of food and humanitarian supplies so I will have plenty to do.

Also I feel like it would be weird for the underground to "hold" ground. Feel like maybe we should create a separate faction to go major with and belong to both, something like "The United Planets of "whatever".

I can hear the chants now UPW, UPW! :laugh:

[member="Jorus Merrill"] - Sent/Sending you my thoughts on Skype in detail...

My thoughts are? I am ok if we stay minor... But we have a very, very good shot and set-up for major. And I have heard many lament the lack of a nice loose Rogue/Fringe group since LotF dissolved and GA went from that to #TeamLightSide.

So I am for taking this and running with it. But I am by no means upset if we stay minor. Just sense and see an opportunity.

As for BB's point... We don't need a new Faction... The Rebellion went from malcontent Imperial Senators to the New Republic... We could literally do something similar... Focus less on just holding the ground and conqeouring things (SSC vibe here) and more leaving the planet governing to individuals in our Faction or back-drop NPCs, and this Faction become less the big dogs of our blob on the Map and more.... More the Everyday Joes populating it...

Since [member="Jorus Merrill"] suggested it... The random ramblings I sent him on Skype.

[11:00:43 PM] Remy: Rather than post to your Rebellion thread with full content:

We've tossed around the idea of a Fringe/Rogue group on Skype. And whilst I'm fine to stay minor... This is a pretty damned good opportunity to go Major, and have a helluva story to it. OOCly we'd also start out with a planet with Phrik on it... Huge for smuggling/gun running and armory ops to fund a rag-tag group of rogues, and the Kathol Outback would be great to hide in.

And we'd be neighbors to the GA, so there is plenty of good story co-op with them if they are willing, and we have the little vacuum from the CotBR, and a massive bit of TU space we could see about expanding to or such. Pretty good set-up.

And it's looking like i'm part time at work now for probably the rest of the year to keep school under works... So... I have the time, the desire, and the IC and OOC ability to help make it happen. And I can't think of a better emergence really.

Plus, being the first group to go Major from a successful rebellion, and having the Fringe/Rogue bend... If we keep it loose and focused right, less on territory glomming and more on a good story... We could make a mark while we are there... And if we fail or get recalled after a while? We were minor once... We can go back to it...
[11:03:38 PM] Jon: i agree on all points. some stuff changed at work and I'm not 100% sure I could commit to something like that, but I do agree. let's see what the others think
[11:04:49 PM] Remy: I'd offer to spear head it.. But... I know my rep with some... I worry even with me trying to change it that it might be floating about. But I'm willing to help run it and spearhead shit. Feck, I'm willing to let you continue owning it, and Me, Dario, or whoever run it while you sorta become Conclierge or something
[11:05:18 PM] Jon: the thought's occurred to me. we do have a solid core group
[11:06:24 PM] Remy: Aye... And I say we have some good possibilities in the Mandos and SSC for inspiration. Focus less on Empire building and map glomming, and more building up what we have and our story (mandos) and let the planetary stuff fall to willing members to govern (OS) or NPCs and just backdrop (SSC and Primeval)
[11:09:25 PM] Remy: Definitely leave it up to membership... But... If ever there were a chance, this is it, OOCly and ICly.. I suspect because we stick it to the CotBR in a classy way we will probably get some OOC 'Atta boys' that translate to IC stuff
[11:12:51 PM] Jon: i agree. really really wish i could commit
[11:13:06 PM] Jon: you should put this up for the faction, see what they say
[11:15:36 PM] Remy: If you think it'll matter, sure. I am but Sleep-Deprived Medic Student # 24601

So, tl;dr... If we want to do this... I'm willing to commit and make it happen. In whatever capacity people want. And i'll still be here if we don't and stay minor. But I think we'll be missing out and throwing away a huge chance to do something if we don't.

I like your thoughts, really like your thoughts, [member="Glavo Pahro"], but I'm not feeling led in one direction more than the other. That's me, not you.

Staying minor fits the definition of an 'underground'. If we were to go major, we'd want to look at changing our name, at least. Either way, if we can truly keep a story focus and not let the map game forever dominate our destiny, then... I'm still happy.

I'm a bit disillusioned with the territory grab and constant war, at this point in time, to be honest.

I'd be most willing to drop my FA seat within the Mandalorian Faction if we ever lift off from minor to major. I really don't see this as a sword that could affect us if we do. If things go out smoothly as a major faction, then great! Awesome! If not, we go back to being a minor faction and continue to do what we've done in the past.

Also, [member="Jannik Morlandt"], we don't necessarily have to focus on the map game. I kinda see this faction reflecting off of the once Levantine Sanctum or a lite version of the Lords of the Fringe (two factions that were successful in the long run). Indeed, it'd be an uncommon thing for us to grab territory, but we won't have to do that.

[member="Jannik Morlandt"] - I like the thoughts there.. They have weight. And truly, if I have my say (and I tend to no matter what, just if it is listened to) the map game will be the absolute least of the worries. I'd want us to stick almost exclusively to the Kathol Outback. It is what fits.

Definitely keep it a small region. Not focus on doms except if we have a reason to, or someone wants to sub a planet for story or such. Otherwise? We hold the region more as caretakers, guides, and stewards. Hold things like Kessel Run-esque contests.... If and when we do doms, do it less as conqeouring a planet, and open it up to 'X' outside of the Faction and 'Y' inside it... We're exploring the new or distant planet, establishing trade routes, boltholes, shadowports. Story threads that fit our Faction, but aren't just 'Subjugate Planet X'

Doms are only show pieces of Empire building and fast conquers because that is the trend and habit. Major Factions are obsessed with taking as much territory as fast as they can and being Empires because that is also the trend and habit. Mandos showed you can do otherwise. So did the GA at first. So do the LS before the Merge...They all had/have their own unique set of challenges that don't apply here, but it is possible and feasible...

Know how you change all that Map Drama??? Make this map game we all seem to hate change, or go away? You ignore it. Straight out that simple... Or when you acknowledge it, you do it in a completely different context. The GA had some good elements to it for how they did story, with even trying diplomatic themes to doms, the Mandos introduced more of it with forcibly staying small as a Faction, and even giving up territory. I say we take a third step and show the Community that holding planets and being Major isn't about having the biggest cloud, but the best story and lore in the region we hold.

As a new member I'm not really all that up on the map drama. That said I think [member="Glavo Pahro"] has a point and I'll be willing to help out, keep in contact with newer members like me and keep them feeling included.

We can basically just choose to say out of the map game, but if we do hold a few systems and go major that opens up a lot more assess to us right? Big capital ships and stuff?

More stuff more fun?

[member="Bryce Bantam"] - If we run it how some of us suggested, there is, in my opinion, zero risk. All we do, like you said, is gain assets and tools otherwise barred from us.

We would be able to own bigger space stations (which I see as more of an option to fit our style than fleets) and bigger ships we could use as mobile shadowports ala Booster Terrik and his star destroyer.

The only negative I have heard repeatedly are 'What about Map Game arguments/Empire building isn't Underground style?' and 'I dont want to lose our flexibility as a Minor Faction!'.... Which I get... But my only question is...

Why is being Major inflexible? What rule or mandate forces us to act inflexibly once we go Major? And who says being major means we must do doms and invasions for activity? When they come, we should meet them head-on, sure. But Major Factions only must be active. Nothing about the how.

Plus, like [member="Vilaz Munin"] said... We try it... We don't like it? We go right back down to Minor, and there is no real loss.

I'm a complete newb to this community, but I've read a few things here and there.

Either way, minor or major. I'm down with it, but if we go major. I would definitely prefer to stay out of the map game and any drama that brings. The only drama I want is right within our own stories and plots. There is plenty to do in the Kathol Outback, and the way that I see it is like this. The Underground itself would stay underground, I'm sure we can do well to prop up something in our actual steads, NPCs or what have you to govern, run things while we do what the underground does best. At least this way, we'll able to do more than we're currently able to do. We're not out to conquer anything or anyone, outside of the Underground most of the characters have other dealings and factions they're tied to.

So basically, I'm echoing [member="Glavo Pahro"] and [member="Vilaz Munin"].

Also, if we go major does this mean we have to change our name to "Above Ground" ? Asking for a friend.

[member="Glavo Pahro"]

Actually: Motto?

Insurgo Tyrannorum / Insurgents, to Rise Against / Tyrants, tyranny

Names:

The Corsairs? Rebels United? The Fringe Coalition? The Fringe Corsairs? United Rebels of the Fringe? The Kathol Liberators? Okay, now this is just gonna turn into me sounding like a 40K Space Marine Chapter ...

The Corellian Rose (retired)
I like the aspect of putting roots down in the Kathol Outback so we can have a sandbox to play in…. but no map game. I also like just being the Underground doing stuff.

Oh and I joined the Rebellion thread. :cool:

My Opinion on the Map-Game:

fangorn_burning_map_by_caioalmeida.jpg

We have it within us to consciously make a decision to do our own thing. This group has been doing it since its' inception. Why not thumb our nose, ICly and OOCly, a bit more at the established norm?

[member="Vilaz Munin"]

I was in OOC leadership positions for both of those factions - FO for the Fringe for about a year, and FA in the LS for I think about as long. They're both near and dear to my heart and I would love nothing more than to see a faction that has the blood of those two in its veins.

[member="Glavo Pahro"]

I like the direction in which this could go. So, in the end, what I have to say is... why not? :D

[member="Jannik Morlandt"]

Gotta echo Jannik here. The Fringe and the Levantines were my favorite factions, period. I have never felt the same way about any faction since those two.

So to start something similar now... in the Kathol Outback, which is basically one of my favorite regions in SW?

Do it.

...what a thing to wake up to. Wow, guys, I'm not sure I've ever seen this kind of outpouring of interest for an Underground idea.

[member="Jannik Morlandt"] [member="Khaleel Malvern"] [member="Glavo Pahro"] [member="Eliza Steele"] [member="Vilaz Munin"] [member="Ria Misrani"] [member="Bryce Bantam"] [member="Kira Vaal"]

I would love to be part of this. An outer rim/outback faction that doesn't care about map game and retains flexibility -- it's like an evolution of the LS/Fringe setup and I dig it.

If we do this, it'll mean having a bunch more faction admins/mods, but I'm sure a bunch of you will rise to the challenge. Talk to me if you're interested, if you haven't already. I'm pretty busy at work and with kids, but I think my participation in something like this could be feasible once we add enough faction staff. That, and I don't foresee this faction being hugely intensive to operate. We've lasted this long on a wing and a prayer and good initiative from members. I agree with you: let's keep doing what we're doing, just as a little Major.

Like Vilaz said, if we don't enjoy being major, we go minor again with no harm done, and keep doing what we've been doing for the past couple of years.

So let's talk about names.

  • The Kathol Outback (TKO): Localizes us, gives us canon identity, 'outback' is perfect, and the acronym rocks
  • The Kathol Republic (TKR): Localizes us, gives us canon identity, but some folks get leery over anything with 'republic' in it - and we're shooting for Firefly and Han Solo and I'm not sure 'republic' fits that
  • Outer Rim Coalition (ORC): At this point I"m just having fun with acronyms
  • Wild Space Confederation (WSC)
  • Kathol Free Territories (KFT)
  • Kathol Independent Coalition (KIC)
Something along those lines. The name would need to be grounded, blue-collar, the kind of thing that tells people immediately what we're about.
