Kiff was not the most. . . how would one put it? Orthodox out of the Confederacy’s roster of High Marshals and High Command officers. But while he didn’t have a rod up his arse, he was anything but neglectful of his duty, especially when it came to the defense of his sector. And he’d begun to fear that his defense would soon be tested, and that the Confederacy would be unprepared for that hypothetical eventuality.
The truth was, when HIGHCOM wasn’t making arbitrary invasions of galactic powers halfway across the galaxy, they were doing, well, nothing. It had been months since candidates had convened to decide the new Minister of War, yet no selection had been announced. The Grand Marshal was absent as always, and last Kiff had seen of her she’d been reading children’s stories.
Kiff officially held very little power. But he wasn’t going to let technicalities prevent him from carrying out his duty. And besides, who could protest at a friendly game of Sabacc between familiar High Marshals?
He waited in a corner of the Storm Lounge of the Storm King, the dreadnaught’s bar and mess. The table was dimly lighted, and he shuffled the cards on his deck as he waited for his guests to arrive.
