Ultimatum
Duranium Lord
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
The Ultima Chip, named after the Ultima-Pearl that was to be its primary component, though Alzoc Pearls are used as well, is a minor design addition by Ultimatum to existing and future LOOM products. The chip is intended to act as a backup for droid program. By taking a relatively large pearl, usually around two centimeters in diameter, and carefully drilling cavities and tunnels and then layering in basic computer components, the pearl is able to act as a miniature databank. Ultimatum designs these chips to store precisely the amount of information for a droid clean off the assembly line. This is supposed to act as a backup in the case of a user error which damages or removes the original program.
As the chip uses incredibly minute spaces, and is encased in a none-too-sturdy material, the chip is incredibly fragile. Without precise and careful handling, it is easy for the internal caverns to collapse, turning an otherwise expensive piece of hardware into little more than a jewel. A drop from as much as one foot will leave the chip useless for anything other than the pearl's appearance. The pearl itself is more hardy, being able to maintain its shape and appearance through similar treatment. Due to this natural fragility, the chip requires specialled designed equipment to interact with it. In the case of droids it has been prebuilt into it, both as a shock absorber and as the reader.
