STRENGTHS
  • Brawler: Heavily Armed, tough, and agile enough to keep on target, the Cutlass is a mean frigate to face up close.
WEAKNESSES
  • Poor Escort: Designed for line of battle operations, and with the vast majority of available reactor power the Cutlass is neither a particularly quick ship, nor does it have a hanger large enough to let it act in purely independent operations or perform as a dedicated support ship to larger units.
DESCRIPTION
Every once in a while, some enterprising politician has the thought to take off all the constraints of the military procurement process and just let the Admirals and Generals design a weapon themselves. Even more rarely, that process results in something resembling a success. For the Galactic Alliance Defense Force, this once-in-a-million miracle has manifested as the Type 062D 'Cutlass-class' Assault Frigate, and a modestly clever politician who can count on support and votes of the Navy for the foreseeable future.
Inspired in part by the old Boneshatter-class Frigate that saw extensive use by the One Sith and later successor groups, the Cutlass is designed for frontal assaults and close-range brawling in a battle line. Small but durable, it is designed to engage ships larger than itself either in wolfpack formations, or to assist larger vessels, targeting vulnerable ships and exploiting weakpoints.
The primary batter consists of 10 long-range turbolasers arranged into 5 twin turrets, all in a forward arc. The long-range heavy strike capability is supplemented by 16 Capital-Grade Missile Tubes, typically loaded with Assault Concussion Missiles, but overall giving the Cutlass an impressive first-strike capability. Secondary armament is 24 medium turbolasers with an emphasis on rapid fire capability over raw firepower, and four capital-grade ion cannons, with all around fire arcs. A set of missile turrets, used primarily in an anti-strikecraft role, round out a respectable point defense armament.
With most of its reactor power dedicated to offensive and defense, the Cutlass is not a terribly quick ship. The lack of hanger (the internal volume being needed for aforementioned weapons and power) powerful but short-ranged point defense suite means the ship makes a poor escorting vessel despite its size. The ship also relies heavily on automation for a reduced crew complement, which comes with a variety of benefits but also drawbacks.
Unfortunately giving the military a free hand is unlikely to result in the most cost-effective process, and this has limited the deployment of the Cutlass across Galactic Alliance space. By no means an uncommon vessel, it has not become quite as widespread as High Command has wished, mostly seen augmenting established task forces and acting as backup to larger cruisers and destroyers.
