Mercury lay on the narrow cot, shifting against the uncomfortable mattress as she stared at the ceiling for what felt like the hundredth time. One hundred and twenty-five tiles. Five rows of twenty-five. The number hadn't changed since she'd arrived on Ordo Eris, but counting them gave her something to focus on while she waited to find out what the Haxion Brood planned to do with her.
All she'd done was break a couple of noses and bones after some men decided to stand in her way. She had asked them nicely to move, so she couldn't exactly blame herself when they refused. Apparently, the Haxion Brood enforcers didn't see it that way. They had dragged her off to prison, though Mercury could have resisted if she'd wanted.
Fighting an entire squad just to escape would have been more trouble than it was worth, so she'd let them cuff her and see what happened. Her answer came when the cell door finally slid open and a Weequay jailer stepped inside. "Tribunal's made a decision," he grunted.
"You can fight for your freedom in the pits. Your opponent is another inmate who's caused us trouble." Mercury yawned to hide the sudden excitement creeping into her face. It had been far too long since she'd fought for anything other than a paycheck, not since her old employer had been arrested by the High Republic.
She practically jumped off the cot and followed the jailer down the corridor. Her weapons were returned along the way, and she quickly strapped them into place as they approached the arena. Then the force field opened, and the roar of the crowd came over her, bringing back memories she hadn't realized she'd missed.
Across the pit, her opponent,

, stepped into view. Mercury licked her lips and rolled her shoulders, settling into a comfortable fighting stance as her grin widened. "Oh, this will be fun," she said, barely containing her anticipation.
