BIOGRAPHY

Tai Yk-tan was engineered, not born. An illegal slicer combined rare Firrerreo bloodlines with half-Firrerreo genetics to create a marketable subject, testing her healing, pain tolerance, and obedience from childhood. Tai quickly learned that owners and rescuers alike usually wanted something from her, teaching her one rule, never let anyone decide her worth.

She escaped the lab network as a teenager and eventually ended up in Vek Daro's illegal gladiator circuit, where she fought debtors, prisoners, and captured rivals. The crowds named her Mercury, a name she kept because it became the first identity she chose for herself. For years, the arena gave her a simple life, enter the cage, win, get paid, and ask no questions.

That life ended when High Republic authorities arrested Daro and dismantled his organization. Worse, the surviving records may connect the arena to the lab that created Tai, potentially revealing who commissioned her or proving someone still considers her property.

Now 34, Mercury works as a blade for hire, taking security, retrieval, escort, extraction, and other jobs respectable people prefer to keep off the books. She refuses to move prisoners, guard cages, recover escaped property, or silence people tied to engineered bloodlines. She calls it professional standards, not mercy.

PERSONALITY

She hates speeches, exposes stupid plans without hesitation, and treats most relationships as transactions, meals are fuel, favors are debts, and grief is wasted time. When emotions get too close, she responds with a joke, threat, or change of subject.

Beneath that armor, she wants proof that her life belongs to her, not the slicer who created her, Daro's arena, future employers, or even the blood she was engineered to preserve. Her contradiction is that she believes attachment makes people weak, yet repeatedly risks herself for people trapped in systems she recognizes.

She may protect a prisoner or accept less money to get someone vulnerable to safety, then insist she only did it because it was efficient. Mercury's growth is not about becoming softer. It is about choosing her own loyalties, deciding which lines she will not cross, and building a life where she no longer needs a cage to tell her who she is.

Strengths

Rapid Healing: Tai recovers from cuts, burns, broken bones, and blood loss far faster than most people. Her regeneration is powerful, but severe wounds still hurt, drain her energy, and can put her out of action for a time.

Pit-Honed Instincts: Years in illegal arenas taught Mercury how to read body language, spot concealed weapons, recognize dirty tricks, and sense when an opponent is about to break. She is at her best in tight spaces and close-range fights.

Close-Quarters Specialist: Tai is dangerous with vibroblades, knives, improvised weapons, and her bare hands. She can turn a cramped corridor, cargo hold, or prison cell into an advantage.

High Pain Tolerance: She can stay focused while injured and keep fighting through pain that would stop most people. This makes her difficult to intimidate and hard to remove from a fight.

Direct and Reliable: Mercury does not flatter clients or make promises she cannot keep. Once she accepts a job and gives her word, she follows through unless the contract crosses one of her personal lines.

Fearless Under Pressure: Threats, wealth, rank, and reputation do not impress her much. Tai has faced armed guards, screaming crowds, and fighters trying to kill her for sport; panic is not her usual response.

Survival Skills: She knows how to find work, disappear from a station, sleep lightly in unsafe places, spot predatory employers, and stretch scarce supplies between contracts.

Hidden Protective Instinct: Tai claims she does not care about anyone, but she reacts strongly to prisoners, exploited fighters, lab-made people, and anyone treated as property. She is more likely to help them than she wants to admit.

Weaknesses

Reckless with Her Own Safety: Tai relies too heavily on her healing. She takes hits she should avoid, stays in fights too long, and sometimes treats damage as proof that she is tougher than the person trying to hurt her.

Not Invincible: Regeneration cannot protect her from everything. Stun weapons, toxins, suffocation, restraint foam, repeated head trauma, exhaustion, and overwhelming numbers can still beat her.

Emotionally Avoidant: She calls affection, grief, trust, and concern mushy stuff because she has no practice handling them. When someone gets close, Tai often pushes them away before they can hurt or disappoint her.

Blunt to a Fault: Mercury believes honesty is better than kindness, but she often uses being honest as an excuse to be cruel. Her words can ruin alliances before they have a chance to become useful.

Distrustful of Authority: High Republic officials, law enforcement, nobles, corporate security, and anyone wearing a uniform start with negative points in her eyes. Sometimes that instinct is justified; sometimes it makes her reject help she needs.

Poor at Long-Term Plans: Tai thinks about the current job, the nearest exit, and the next payment. She has trouble investing in a stable future because she does not fully believe she deserves one.

Identity Trigger: Being called a specimen, asset, weapon, property, or failed experiment can make her lose control. She becomes cold, violent, and dangerously focused on proving that nobody owns her.

Difficulty Accepting Help: She would rather bleed alone than let someone think she owes them. This can turn manageable problems into disasters and leave her isolated when she most needs support.

Survivor's Guilt: Tai insists she is grateful she never had parents or a normal childhood. Beneath that certainty is anger and grief over what she was denied. Seeing families, children, or people with genuine loyalty can bring out a bitterness she does not understand.

Moral Blind Spot: She spent years convincing herself that pit fighting was simply work. She still struggles to face the fact that she benefited from a system built on prisoners and desperate people. Her growth depends on deciding what she will do with that guilt rather than denying it.
