Description

(Describe some of the history behind the submission. Please provide a detailed account or link of each special feature that is listed in this submission. Give us some idea of how it might perform its function, what it excels against and what some limitations of it are. This is where you talk about your idea, flesh it out over at least a good-sized paragraph, and address some of the ways it might be used or abused. All miscellaneous descriptive elements go here, such as Cargo Capacity, Passengers, Consumables, Crew, etc. For especially powerful or ambitious submissions, a very thorough description is recommended.)

So I've been working on this starship submission template passively for about 2 years now. I'm not the best BB coder on the site, but these things take time and effort to refine, so I thought once I finally had something worth sharing that I'd make it available to be shared with the community.

This is just a new template for making starships. Specifically, it's for guys like me who like to build super detailed ships with dozens of hyperlinked tech components, and "long-form paragraph" feature descriptions. This isn't for everyone, I get that, and it is not my intention to disparage the works of other builders in the factory. Everyone has their own style, and I don't condone perceived elitism or gatekeeping in any capacity. This is simply a tool to help people with a detailed vision of their creations sort their work into more digestible segments for ease of reader consumption.

How to use it?

Simple. It's no different from the original template, in that you copy-paste the BB code into your workspace, and then fill-out the data entry fields. This format is passable in its current state, as I have tested it out to the extreme, and it seems to work.

But there are 3 caveats.

Caveat 1

This will not make your submissions any stronger or weaker in PVP.

This is a common talking point that is commonly preached by experience players in the community, but I will reiterate this for the sake of redundancy. Your PVP performance is defined by 3 things:
  1. your knowledge of the subject matter that you write,
  2. your level of inspiration, and
  3. your ability conduct yourself as a mature adult in the OOC.
So, your submission strength will be determined by the same criteria. A fancy format is nothing more than aesthetics, and a well-organized format simply makes it easier for readers to consume your content. But the absolute best subs on the board are written by the guys and girls that know their crap, have strong inspiration, and are able to treat the judges with respect. I still learn lots from the guys that use very basic formatting, and this new format does not give me any sort of edge in PVP.

In fact, some of you might have noticed that there are some subs out there that are extremely tech-spammy and use almost no formatting whatsoever. The inspiration and level of homework that is exhibited in these subs is indeed, impressive. It can even be argued that their lack of formatting is perceived as a PVP advantage opposed to a deficit, since sorting out their secrets is harder to do as an opponent. Shrugs. Art comes in many forms.

In short, this template is a gift to make your more... wordy subs look pretty and easy to read. Nothing more.

Caveat 2

Modify this template at your own peril.

To be clear, if you have the BB coding skills to add to this template, or improve it, please be my guest!!! Selfishly, I'd love to see what other, more talented coders can do with this, and I'd even appreciate it if you sent me a link to your work so I can admire what you have done! I'm a big fan of patient workmanship and attention to detail, so please feel free to take this and build on it.

But please keep 2 things in mind:
  1. This code in it's current state is already approvable, in light of the January 2023 Staff Announcement.
  2. Your intentions are critical in how you approach this!!!
How you approach this is the key. If your intention is to make your submission easier to read, the judges will notice and their critique will be angled towards helping you achieve this.

But...

If your goal is to make your submission harder to read, deceive readers and judges, or blindside opponents with hidden content, the judges will catch you, and ask you to make changes. If you respond with sass, lip, or defensiveness, they will likely deny your submission, and then consider banning this format entirely to avoid future abuse. The rule change mentioned in the January 2023 announcement is experimental at best, and the staff is putting a lot of trust in us. Therefore, I am putting a fair bit of trust in you by giving this to you.

Sidebar; as a very general rule of thumb, it is always best for a player to put their pride aside when they are receiving feedback from the judges. Try not to think of a live review as "passing" or "failing", but more like "peer review". It is not the judges goal to deny your work, but to help you fit your vision into the rules of the board before approval. The better you are at humbling yourself in the presence of constructive feedback, the more the judges will typically let you experiment with things.

Be respectful. Please don't get my template banned.

Caveat 3

Just stick to original staff-made template if…

Honestly, the original template is still better for most submissions that are out there, particularly with technology subs. I personally still prefer to use it for basic technology subs. For a shorter submission with very straightforward features and a brief description, it's better if the reader doesn't have to click or tap on any tabs to read the contents. This new template is more for ship-builders who have accumulated hoards of tech hyperlinks and who like to write-out paragraph-long feature descriptions, for multiple features. For some, after about two or more years of "factory-ing", the desire to incorporate previous work, or the work of friends tends to stretch starship submissions to longer and longer lengths. Their starship subs can sometimes start to look a little spammy and daunting to the reader.

The idea behind this template is to sort those features and links into categories that are separated into bite-sized chunks. When the reader is looking for specifics on something like strengths/weaknesses, or armaments, the ability to just look at one section at a time in a neatly sorted format is nicer than scrolling and scanning. It's also a nice way to present a project that you put a lot of time and effort into making, like a "fancy picture frame", or a "glass case". If you like to make a good impression on a piece that you're proud of, this template is right for you. But if you are the kind of player that has more inspiration and ideas than time, or if you're just trying to learn how the system works, the original template is honestly probably a better fit for you.

In summary

This is a gift. It's not the best BB code out there, but it's something that I put a lot of work into and I figure that it is worth sharing with the community. Please use it responsibly, and I look forward to seeing what you all can do with it.

And if you would like to see an example of what this code looks like when used, HERE is an example of my most ambitious project to date for your reference.

And may the force be with you.

TLDR:
  1. This template is not a PVP advantage.
  2. If you try to use this template to trick or fool the judges, you will get it banned and make Burtch a sad panda.
  3. The original template is better for less complicated subs.
  4. This template is ideal for highly detailed starship submissions.
