Private Training Session

Inarin grunts as he strikes with the training saber, his gaze momentarily goes to the holocron he’s studying, attempting to mimic the steps, the movements, the flow, it all needed to be perfect. His form is sloppy, his timing off, he groans in frustration as he sits down to take a break, trying to catch his breath and maybe calm his nerves.

A soft breath escaped Valery's lips after she finished the last exercise of her daily training routine. The battle of Exegol was finally drawing closer, so she kept up with her training but also made sure not to push herself too far. She had to be ready, both physically and mentally for the most important fight of her life, and that meant just the right combination between exercise and rest was necessary.

Now, she planned to head to her apartment and spend the rest of her day meditating and relaxing.

At least, until she felt another presence in the Temple's training area. It wasn't uncommon at all, but this Jedi didn't feel like he was another Padawan studying the Forms, yet there was an aura of frustration around him. So after grabbing her towel to wipe some sweat off her forehead, she stepped out of her room and made her way over to his.

She knocked three times, then slid open the door to look at the Jedi Knight inside. "Everything alright in here?" she asked, her fiery eyes searching for him.

Inarin turned to meet her gaze, drawing a deep breath,

“Yeah….no…I’ve been studying this holocron, trying to recreate the form the duelist pictured uses, but it’s proved tougher than I first thought it would be”

He shows her the recording within the holocron, showing a duelist utilizing a saber staff as he flowed between two attackers, using subtle shifts to parry each attack quickly and efficiently.

Valery dipped her head in response and turned her eyes to the holocron he was using for practice. It was a familiar item to her, as she had once studied using them a great deal too. Now, she even had her own Battlemaster's holocron detailing much of her own knowledge and experience with the lightsaber and various other techniques, such as Jar'kai and Trakata.

"Well, what is it that you struggle with exactly?" Valery then asked.

"Have you chosen a lesson that's too advanced? Or is there something about the weapon and how it should be used that doesn't quite connect with you yet?" Valery's preferred weapon was the saberstaff as well, so it was safe to say that she had a lot of experience with it.

Perhaps she could use it to guide him.

“It doesn’t seem like it would be that advanced, as for the weapon, it’s also my preferred style, I’m not sure what it is about this lesson…the form seems simple enough…maybe it would help to actually use it in a combat scenario.” He replies.

"When used by a Master, any Form will seem simple, but there are a lot of subtle things you can miss that make the difference. That, and the people you see performing these movements have practiced them for many years. It's a combination of muscle memory, intuition and experience gained in the field." In other words, not something you'd replicate just overnight, and certainly not by exclusively training here.

"So you're right, some actual experience might help. But I also wouldn't underestimate the Form and style so much. Acknowledging that it has difficult aspects will only help you overcome them."

Inarin nods, considering what Valery said, he’d grown up learning martial arts, a form that, much like she said, took years to master, but each form was different, with its own intricacies to master, and many duelists didn’t actually follow a specific form, instead adapting given form to their own personal style of fighting. That’s why he was studying the holocron to begin with, to find a form that he could adapt to use in tandem with his martial arts abilities.

“So…would you like to be my sparring partner? You agree practical experience is better than lessons.”

"One isn't better than the other. You need both, but practice certainly never hurts," Valery said with a dip of her head before stepping away and positioning herself in the center of the training room. She then reached for the hilt of her double-bladed weapon and held it out in front of her, the emitters parallel to the ground.

Two violet blades then ignited, set to low power, and Valery offered another small dip of her head.

"Let's work on the form. Restrict yourself to what you're struggling with, and I'll push you a little further." One step at a time, she wanted to push him beyond his comfort zone, hoping it would help him improve.

"First move is yours to make."

Inarin ignites his own doublesaber, two blue blades emitting, as he took a fighting stance, recalling the lesson from the holocron, before leaping, taking an aggressive swing with one end of his weapon, before following up with an upward slash from the opposite end. That part was simple enough, it was transitioning into the next strike where he began to struggle, there ways a noticeable pause before bringing the first blade down in a diagonal slash, before bringing retreating with a quick flourish as he prepared to defend himself.
