To Catch a Thief

Z92oqf8.png

Darkness had fallen over Theed a few hours ago – the vendors had closed up shop, the rowdy kids were in bed, and the citizenry were taking their last little walks before turning in for the night. The tiled streets still reflected the light of the street lamps beautifully, but Cassius Droma had found a nice little dark corner to reflect in. Simple Jedi robes rustled in the breeze as he leaned against the stone railing that kept him from falling down the cliff face below, the Royal Palace only about a hundred meters away.

His eyes closed, he felt the light wind on his face, and listened to the rushing waterfall not too far away. He’d heard so many stories about Naboo and its beauty, and had wanted to come see it for himself for some time, but too many things had gotten in the way. Whether it was Jedi training, a grand battle, or being stuck on a dark stormy world for almost a year, it always seemed like something would crop up to prevent him from taking time off.

Here he was, though, about three days in, and loving every minute of it. He’d gotten a hotel room that overlooked the beautiful landscape that Theed stood proudly over. The food was good. The people were kind and courteous.

This was paradise.

~~

A lithe figure, clad in all black, moved across the rotunda of one of the Royal Palace’s many structures, crouching low and carefully stepping from heel to toe in order to remain silent. Nearly two hours of climbing up the side of the cliff face to the palace would have left him exhausted, but adrenaline was pushing him forward. The thrill of the chase, of sneaking into a place where he wasn’t allowed… that’s what kept him going.

Effortlessly stepping into a small decorative lintel that jutted out from the top of a window, he pressed himself against the wall as a guard passed by – exactly when he should have. Looking down at his chronometer, the young thief checked the time. The guard change was happening now. Time to move.

He swung himself down to the window below, only his toes on the sill as he reached into his pocket and retrieved the device that would unlock the window without sounding any alarms. A soft click allowed him entry. Opening the window, he slinked through, closing it behind him.

He was in. The thin thief had picked his entry point carefully, so he didn’t have to go bouncing throughout the palace to get where he wanted to be. His expressionless gaze scanned the area around him, his green-lensed night vision goggles and black mask obscuring his face. This room apparently had some items of great importance – which items, his contact couldn’t or wouldn’t say. Or she just didn’t know. Either way, the information seemed to have paid off.

What his contact had neglected to tell him was that this room was directly adjacent to the bedroom of the Queen of Naboo – [member="Jamie Pyne"].

Atop the woman's dresser was a small, ornate pedestal with two vertical arms. Made of Zaela wood, it served as a cradle for the blonde's lightsaber. Though she typically carried it on her person, Jamie had begun settling in for the evening, having spent the vast majority of the day arguing the cost of the new probe stations in Naboo's outer system as a precautionary first line of defense from the forces of evil that neighbored the Alliance. Some called it paranoia, others might call it vigilance. That's what Jamie called it, anyway. Vigilance.

The galaxy was at an unsafe place, an uncertain place in time. The Alliance was in full swing war mode against the First Order once more, and the Galactic Empire as well.

And the outlook projections were not exactly favorable.

She sighed, turning towards the window of the room, hands placed gently along the masterwork railing of the balcony. Flowing gold locks rested against left and right cheeks, sparkling blue eyes gazing out at the moonlit sky beyond the horizon of Theed. The night was calm; A light, swaying breeze tugged on the leaves of the trees. Below, a pair of guards walked the pathway. Two others stationed themselves at either entrance that led inside the palace one floor below. Like this evening, often times this was the only moment of silence she shared with herself throughout the day. All too often she found herself submerged in the daily routine of her position as queen. The rest of the time she spent making sure that her Jedi talents remained sharp.

Now however, it was just her, the moon, the stars, and the quiet howl of the wind.

A sudden wave of anxiety hit Cassius – the kind one feels when they’ve forgotten something, or when impending doom is just around the corner. The young Jedi was far enough along in his training to know that this wasn’t some sort of panic attack, but the Force trying to tell him something. He didn’t know where, or how, or even what, but something was about to happen.

Stepping back from the stone railing, Cassius looked around. Nothing seemed off. It was the slowest time of night, after all. Regardless, he began to meander towards the general direction of the palace, his head on a swivel, eyes scanning the area.

~~

His original intel had been off, it seemed. There was nothing of significance in this room. At least, nothing that he could see. Maybe he was off by a room. Seeing as how he hadn’t set off any alarms or alerted any guards yet, his confidence was growing that maybe the palace wasn’t as heavily guarded as he’d been led to believe. After all, who would be stupid enough to try and sneak into the Royal Palace, anyways?

Soundlessly, he moved over to another door and opened it a crack, making sure that it didn’t squeak as he peered in. As his eyes flicked around the room, he froze as he saw a figure standing near a window, her back to him. It was the Queen – had to be. Wasn’t she a Jedi Knight or something? Would she be able to detect his presence?

Just as he was about to bolt out of there, he spotted something else. A glint of light – something reflective. As he zeroed in on it, he realized what it was: a lightsaber. Queen Jamie’s, no doubt. An endless stream of thoughts and scenarios flooded through his brain. A lightsaber was a Jedi’s prized weapon, forged by their own hands. Any lightsaber would fetch a heavy price on the market, but the lightsaber of the Queen of Naboo? The estimated amount escaped him. That was an once-in-a-lifetime kind of item. It was a do one job and retire kind of item. Sell that, and he could buy a freaking palace on some backwater planet and be attended to by top of the line droids until he died.

Weren’t Jedi attuned to their weapons, though; connected to them in some way? The likelihood of him being caught skyrocketed if he set even one foot in the room. He could be thrown in prison for a very long time.

Worth it.

The thief moved in a strange combination of slow enough to not be heard, and fast enough to get the job done as he made his way towards the dresser. If Her Highness were to turn around, she would clearly see him. He was banking on his speed and stealth, though. Within a few moments, he’d reached the dresser, and his hand hovered over the lightsaber. He stole a glance in the Queen’s one last time…

And he grasped the lightsaber.

All lightsabers were unique constructs shaped by the creativity and imagination of their designers. Jamie's was unique in ways many paid little heed to, right down to the engravings along the Zaela wood hilt. It was simple elegance, worth a small fortune on the black market for sure, any Jedi blade was, and while she was hardly known as a legendary Jedi among the best, she was Queen of Naboo, and that in and of itself put a bit of a price tag on the weapon in place of her Jedi status. To someone unfamiliar with the intricacies of a lightsaber, it would look and feel like a powerful weapon, even despite their lack of knowledge and understanding of such a thing. That was what made thieves dangerous, their ignorance, their incompetence, not their intentions.

The blonde turned, hearing a light step behind her. Sparkling azure eyes caught the glimpse of a shadowy figure as he whisked away, leaving empty the stand upon which her weapon had been resting upon just moments prior. Widening her glare, her expression soured as the man sprinted off through the doorway and down the corridor.

"Hey!" She shouted, "Get back here with that!"

Off she ran in pursuit, her common clothes and lack of a weapon after the person in possession of her lightsaber.

[member="Cassius Droma"]

The double doors that led into the queen’s chambers burst open as the black-clad figure of the thief sprinted out of the room. The powerful voice of the woman trailing behind gave him a quick stab of excitement and panic all at once. Up ahead, two guards had snapped to attention in order to address the intruder in the palace.

Priceless weapon in one hand, the thief drew a small DT-12 blaster pistol with the other, pointing it down range. He didn’t really worry about actually aiming at the two guards as much as he was trying to lay down covering fire. The hallway pulsed red light as blaster bolts were fired by both parties. A searing pain hit him in the shoulder, but he was running on pure adrenaline, so it was ignored for now.

The thief wove to the left then broke right, heading straight for one of the gigantic windows looking out over Theed to the right, and the steep cliff to the left. Two blaster bolts shattered it, and he leapt forward, tucking his head into bent elbows as to shield his face. Hitting a green rotunda of one of the lower-set buildings, he rolled, grunting as the impact was a little harder than expected.

~~~
The sound of smashing glass caught Cassius’s attention. Gaze snapping up, he spotted a man in all black nearly rolling off of a domed building before catching himself. Picking up his pace, the young Jedi headed in the direction of the man whom he figured wasn’t exactly an invited guest of the royal court. The thief used some sort of compact grappling device to quickly lower himself down to ground level, multiple red bolts flashing around him and hitting the ground. Unhooking himself from the line, the thief started to make his way across the expansive plaza.
Cassius was in a full sprint at this point, slowly drawing on the Force in order to increase his speed and endurance. Still, the man he was pursuing was rather quick, probably someone who could run marathons if they hadn’t picked this line of work. The Jedi was slowly closing the distance as more than a half dozen royal guards streamed down the main steps to the palace, no doubt more on the way.
[member="Jamie Pyne"]
The woman snarled, hearing the glass shatter up ahead. She knew the game. Thief steals valuable. Item winds up on black market in the hands of some scumbag who uses it to harm innocents in the name of the Jedi. It was all too common. But not this time. She had lost her first lightsaber in combat. She wouldn't lose this one to a grubby little thief! Approaching the window she saw the silhouette of the man as he barreled out of the opening towards the lower levels of the palace. Whether or not he had been hired by someone or if this was simply a heist for his own personal gain was a question she had, but one she couldn't focus on then. Once she'd apprehended the perpetrator she would see for herself what the reasoning was.
"Stop!" She shouted once more just as his figure fell from view.
Without a second of hesitation she leaped forward, launching herself from the sill of the window out and after the man. Years of training as both a Jedi and explorer lent itself to her in that moment, and her land seemed almost choreographed in its grace. The blonde's head snapped up, eyes glaring holes into the man's back as he sprinted on ahead of her. Jamie rose to her feet and continued the chase, still a ways behind the man as he enjoyed his lead on her.
She paid the guard almost no mind as she raced forward, intent on capturing the man rather than filling him with blaster bolts.
[member="Cassius Droma"]
A form of darkness had taken over the thief’s peripherals, his focus becoming locked on the area ahead. He could hear the shouting behind him, but kept going, a grip of death clenched around the Jedi’s weapon in his hand. Part of him knew that if he dropped it, it might give him the chance to escape while they recovered it. Then again, he hadn’t come all this way to leave empty-handed. The image of a new star yacht imprinted itself on his mind’s eye.
His breathing was becoming more labored as he reached the first few buildings beyond the plaza. The pain in his shoulder started to sting – it had no doubt been a lower-powered bolt, meant to injure rather than kill, but it hurt nonetheless. He had a medical kit at his ship that could easily take care of it. Speaking of which… the thief reached down to his gauntlet and tapped a small green button that started flashing. Elsewhere, a Hyrotti Splint launched from a nearby hangar bay. It would eventually make its way to him, flying low as to avoid detection.
He broke left, into an old alleyway and nearly barreling over a few bystanders as they gasped in surprise at the masked man.
~~
Cassius was gaining ground, but not as much as he thought he would, considering that he had the Force on his side and his target seemed to be injured. Perhaps he needed to train or exercise more – yet another example of him neglecting training in favor of flying with Jade Squadron. Regardless, there didn’t seem to be too many places for this thief to run, and the whole of the Naboo Royal Guard was about to bare down on his position.
As he turned a corner, a flurry of blaster bolts just barely whizzed past him. Although he reached for his lightsaber, one managed to pop him in the side, forcing him to one knee as pain shot through him. He looked up to see the thief trailing away, heading towards the river.
[member="Jamie Pyne"]
The blonde barreled down the street at full sprint, long strides taking her further than the lightly armored guard behind her. Curly golden hair bounced all over as she paid not a moments notice to her appearance, focused solely on catching the man in the midst of stealing her lightsaber. Her thief appeared to have an injury, clutching at the wound for a moment as he ran. Still, it wasn't enough. He was not stopping for anyone. Jamie knew that if he escaped she may very well never see her belonging again.
Jamie reached an intersection just as another man appeared, reaching for something at his side before another hail of bolts rushed past, one stray shot hitting him and bringing him to the ground.
Now was a moment for an important decision. Continue chasing the thief or stop and help the bystander.
Ultimately Jamie stopped, directing the guards to continue pursuit.
"Are you alright?!" Kneeling beside the man she looked up to see the guards rush past. "What were you doing?"
[member="Cassius Droma"]
This was it. Home stretch. The river was up ahead, and so was his escape. His ears twinged in fear at hearing the hurried steps of the Naboo Royal Guards behind him, but he could also hear another sound – the whine of an incoming starship engine. Looking to his right, which was north, he could see the water being kicked up from how fast his ship was coming in. His gauntlet beeped with a higher pitch the closer he got to the water.
The black Hyrotii Splint stopped just a few meters away from the edge of the river. A short hop up got him on top of the stone railing, and then the thief leapt forward, hands reaching. The airlock hissed open and he landed inside with a dull thud, the impact a little harder than he was expecting. Regardless, he tapped two quick commands into his gauntlet, and the Splint sped off, the airlock closing.
The thief managed to stumble his way to the controls, sitting in the cozy pilot’s seat. He did a vertical dive as soon as the signature waterfall came up, trying to use it as cover for the security forces he knew would be coming after him. He’d have to find somewhere on-planet to hide out for a bit – no doubt the planetary defenses were activated, and he wouldn’t be able to leave the system yet.
~~
Cassius struggled to catch his breath, a few light coughs sputtering out as he tried to inhale. His hand went to his side out of instinct and to feel how bad the blast actually was. Not terrible, actually – there only seemed to be some light searing on his robe, but he could already feel a bruise starting to form. It was almost as if he wasn’t hit with a traditional blaster bolt – perhaps something with more concussive power than penetration. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be lethal in the first place. Who knew that a thief could have morals?
He heard a female voice next to him, and she inquired as to what he had been doing. Something stupid, was his knee-jerk reaction to the question, but he figured he’d actually say something a little more eloquent. “Something I do too often,” he groaned as he managed to get back to his feet somewhat, his lightsaber still clutched in his hand. It was true – Commenor, Coruscant… he had a habit of getting into trouble in the name of… good? Or was it trying to be a hero? His knees went weak, and he leaned over onto one of the stone walls to catch himself.
Turning so his back was on the wall, his breathing became steadier as he focused on dealing with the pain. “I’m good,” he murmured, “I’m good…” Looking up, he was struck by who had actually been taking to him: Jamie Pyne, Queen of Naboo. A part of him wanted to straighten up and try to act a little more formal, but he knew that ship had long sailed. She’d just watched him get cracked with a blaster bolt and double over in pain.
The revving of a starship engine caught his attention – no doubt the thief’s escape vehicle. “What’d he do, anyways?” Cassius asked, finally realizing he had no earthly idea why’d been chasing after the man in the first place. All he knew was that he was being chased by the Royal Guard… and that he’d shot him.
[member="Jamie Pyne"]
The guards rushed ahead and past Jamie and Cassius as ordered, radioing for fighters to scramble the moment they caught wind of the thief's getaway ship. They wouldn't catch him now, not since he managed to scramble on board the ship, but he wouldn't break free of the system before the fighters shot him down, if that had been his plan. For the time being at least, he would be trapped on Naboo, lest he be spaced by the RSF before breaking free of the system.
Jamie looked over the man who appeared similar in age to her. She noted the lightsaber in his hand while examining the scorch marks from the blaster. For half a moment she wondered if he had been an intentional diversion for the thief, though decided it mattered very little in the moment. The woman was confident they could track the ship down he had escaped on. "Stole something of mine. Though I'm not sure whether it was for the thrill or a contract for hire. Either way, he's got something of mine that I want back."
For now she would see to the injured man.
"We should get you fixed up though. I appreciate the honest help, but he's gone for the moment, and you need to rest."
[member="Cassius Droma"]
Made sense that it was a thief – the Theed palace was no doubt filled with all kinds of valuables. It had to be a veritable fortress, though. Someone who could slip past their defenses was definitely skilled enough to get away, but just barely. “Well, that’s not good,” Cassius said. “I can only imagine it was for a big payday. Depends on what he took, of course.”
The young Jedi placed his lightsaber back onto his belt, the small twist of his torso sending a trail of pain down his whole left side. Maybe that’s what he got for neglecting his training so much, and instead flying more and more often with Jade Squadron. It also didn’t help that he didn’t have a formal master… use it or lose it, he figured.
“A bacta patch should do just fine,” Cassius said, easing off of the wall and managing to stand on his own two feet. Already, it was starting to become a dull ache, but still a painful one at that. He could already hear the lecturing he’d get from T-4D4, his new security-turned-medical droid.
“Tell you what…” Cassius figured since he was no help in apprehending the thief during the escape, there might be another way he could be useful. “If I can get into the room where the item was stolen, I might be able to read any sort of evidence he might have left behind. I might not be able to block a blaster bolt in time, but I can use psychometry pretty well.” He of course could block a blaster bolt just fine, it’s just that the guy got the drop on him.
[member="Jamie Pyne"]
"Assuming the thief found a buyer for such a thing, it would likely be worth quite a few fortunes. That is, assuming they found a buyer."
Folks interested in purchasing lightsabers could be found on any street corner, but it wasn't just some shoddy lightsaber thrown together by some slicer with a bit of know-how and an old synthetic crystal. The person selling this particular blade knew its origin, who it belonged to, and the premium that would come from owning what would be considered, at least on black market terms, a regal lightsaber. One owned by a Jedi Queen; Not something generally common in the galaxy.
"Do you need help getting to the palace, or are you able to walk? We can get you that patch and then I can take you to where the item was stolen."
Jamie wasn't much of a detective, but she did have the benefit of being able to monitor ships entering and leaving the system for a chance to catch the thief before they made it off of Naboo.
[member="Cassius Droma"]
“If there’s a valuable item in the hands of a thief, he’ll find a buyer for it – even if they’re on the other side of the galaxy,” Cassius muttered. He pressed his fingers against the quickly forming bruise, trying to gauge how much pain there was and whether or not it was too serious. Air sucked through his teeth in a low hiss, but it passed.
Green eyes moved over to the railing where the thief had vaulted over and gotten into his ship. That must have been some sort of back-up plan – it surely couldn’t have been his original plan of egress. He squinted as he tried to find any trace of anything he could use for psychometry… but saw nothing.
“I can walk,” he assured her. He took a step with his left foot, and could already tell he’d be favoring his right side for a while. It was still manageable, however. Just thinking about the icy cool effects of the bacta patch were already making him feel better.
“Lead the way,” he nodded to her.
[member="Jamie Pyne"]
Jamie nodded, ushering the man back towards the palace with her hand.
"We'll find him. Not to worry. He's not going anywhere any time soon."
The short walk back was likely enough time to ask about the weapon he carried, given that it wasn't quite a common sight, especially on Naboo.
"So are you a Jedi then?" She asked, pointing towards his side where the blade rested. "I noticed it earlier."
Most common folk couldn't tell the difference between a Sith or a Jedi, many even referred to them as one in the same, but she was interested in hearing his take on what he considered himself. Better to know ahead of time before the man realized what exactly was stolen of hers, especially if he was going to be helping her retrieve it. It might come to be a bit of a surprise once he came to know what was stolen.
[member="Cassius Droma"]
The pain started to slip into a dull ache as they began to walk back towards the palace. Now that the danger had passed, he began to channel the Force into the wound in order to heal it. While he was no Jedi healer, he had experience with mending his own wounds, especially on Eadu.
She asked if he was a Jedi, taking notice of his lightsaber. “Yeah,” he said, nodding. “At least, I’m trying to be.” Humility was always a trait he tried to carry, but one could see it as a lack of confidence. While his time on the stormy planet of Eadu had sharpened his skills and made him competent in wielding the Force as well as his lightsaber, he still felt as if he was behind other apprentices his age. Not only that, but the responsibility of leading Jade Squadron also put restrictions on how much time he could train.
As they walked up the stairs to the palace, Cassius already began to try and connect himself to the Force here, and how it flowed from the physical objects in the area. It was the best way for him to use his psychometric abilities to read the history of an object or area.
“Where was the item stolen from?” Cassius asked.
[member="Jamie Pyne"]
"It's a long road." She said with a smile, referring to his desire to become a Jedi. "You'll hit many bumps." Jamie maintained her forward stride, casually speaking. "But it will be worth it. Just follow your conscience, the rest will fall into place as needed." She recalled the many, many grueling hours in training on dozens of planets with Aela Talith, the many near death experiences she faced, and even more since being on her own, two fold given her position as queen. It seemed despite Naboo's tranquil atmosphere and neutrality folks couldn't help themselves but carry out attacks for reasons that still eluded the young woman.
The blonde led Cassius through a series of corridors, each adorned with various murals and ornate designs featured on the walls, windows, and ceilings. Even the floors showed something of an artistic touch to them.
"My personal chambers. While I was inside."
That was something of an embarrassment. The thief was good, or perhaps she had let her guard down too easily. "I caught sight of him just as he snatched it and made a break for the window."
[member="Cassius Droma"]
He gave a light smile as she related her words of encouragement in relation to his Jedi path. “Thank you… I’ll keep that in mind.” It had certainly already been a bit of a rough road so far, from his first lessons in the underground frozen temple on Rinn, to the slippery rocks of Eadu. He learned the most while in the most extreme environments, it seemed.
As they passed through the palace corridors, Cassius’s gaze couldn’t help but wander all over the walls and architecture. The anthropologist screamed at him to stop, or at least walk a little slower, so that he could study everything a little bit more. It was highly unlikely that he would be able to set foot in here again, after all. Regardless, he kept moving forward, knowing that he had a job to do.
His eyebrow quirked up when she revealed the location of the crime. “Bold,” he uttered as they entered said chambers, taking a look around. He knelt and touched his fingers to the cool tile, a flash coming to him – that of a black figure, skulking across the floor. In that moment, he could also tell where Jamie had been. “Very bold.”
He followed the trail all the way over to the dresser, where he could see the thief take… “Oh…” Cassius looked up, interrupting his vision. “He stole your lightsaber.” It was certainly a high-value item, but since it was so unique, it would be hard to find a buyer that would be willing to risk acquiring it.
There had to be something, anything, that the thief dropped that he could read.
[member="Jamie Pyne"]
The blonde nodded. "That he did. One that took considerable time and careful precision to construct as well. I would like it returned." As a weapon she rarely needed it in her position, though it certainly helped deter any potential moves on her life. It was more a symbol of pride for her own careful craftsmanship than the symbol of a Jedi. She could always make another, but it wouldn't be the same, and that would mark her second lightsaber lost to a thief. Perhaps inside she was still a bit sore that Castor had managed to best her on Mustafar, only to return the ill-gotten weapon for one final snub.
"I'm curious to know if this thief was simply in it for himself, hoping to find a buyer down the road, or if this was a contract for a particular buyer."
But who would want it?
And why?
Sure, it was a lightsaber, but why hers specifically?
[member="Cassius Droma"]
“I can certainly understand that,” Cassius nodded, standing. He remembered how long it took him to craft his own saber, the one currently on his hip. If someone had stolen it from him, he would chase them to the ends of the galaxy for it.
The Queen speculated on the motive of the thief, and whether or not they had been hired to steal this particular item. “It would certainly make them bold enough to take it, if they were hired…” his voice trailed off as his eyes scanned the room, particularly the floor. He was looking for anything that he could get a read on, and after almost giving up, he spotted it.
A small datachip. So small, that it could have been dropped by their thief and not been noticed. Kneeling once again, and picked up the chip and inspected it before closing his eyes. A flood of flashing memories came to him, so he relied on the Force to help him sort through all of it, to only show him the important moments. “He met someone in a bar… hard to tell where,” he muttered, his eyes darting back and forth under his eyelids. “A woman wearing a hood… doesn’t look like a Sith…” He listened briefly to their conversation. A lightsaber wasn’t specifically mentioned – perhaps it had been a crime of opportunity after all.
“There’s something else,” he said, going forward a little bit, closer to the time of theft. He saw a green valley, with towering trees. Nestled in the valley, far from civilization, was what looked like an artificial canopy with leaves above to disguise it from the air. The ship that the thief had used was housed there. Could that be where he was hiding…?
“A valley – can’t tell how far, but I know it’s on Naboo,” he stood, datachip still in hand. “I can only imagine that’s where he’s hiding out in order for the heat to die off so he can leave the system unhindered.”
[member="Jamie Pyne"]
Jamie was genuinely impressed with Cassius' ability. It was certainly out of the ordinary, and something she'd never come across in her time as a Jedi, though she had heard of folks with the talent. Then again, Jamie was far from being the most impressive Jedi, the ones people told stories about. She was creative and cunning, and adept with a lightsaber, and had a few talents of her own that Aela had helped her mold and master, such as beast taming, but tracking through the Force? Seeing things that had happened? That wasn't in her repertoire.
The datachip he had found was incredibly small. Perhaps she would have found it in due time, though more likely would have inadvertently stepped on it at some point, so it was doubly good that he had searched the room.
"There are quite a few valleys on Naboo. If you can perhaps describe it more I might be able to help. What do the trees look like nearby? Is there water, a river or a lake that runs parallel? Cliffs?"
She knew Naboo, well. If she was of any use to Cassius here, it would be pinpointing what he had seen to an actual place.
