5:00 am
As usual, Valery was up very early in the morning to begin her routine of meditative techniques, Curato Salva, and lightsaber drills to maintain the level of skill and physical prowess she relied on in her duties. But unlike the more typical training days, she now had students of her own to take care of and prepare. It was something she enjoyed a great deal, so in her desire to begin teaching again, she had picked up several young students that needed to be trained.
Today, however, she was going to focus her efforts on one such Padawan in particular.
Briana Sal-Soren Briana Sal-Soren was quite an interesting student who showed a great deal of promise. She had a natural affinity for many of the standard tasks Jedi were involved in, but this also meant she was likely to get a bit too competitive, or even overconfident. This reminded her much about her younger self - the cost of the reckless behavior that followed from her own youthly arrogance was something she still carried with her on her face. A scar that would never fade.
<6:15 am - Transmission>
"Padawan Sal-Soren, it's time to begin your lightsaber instruction. Meet me at the training field in 15 minutes. Don't be late."
Her request was simple, but her typical demeanor made many believe she'd accept students being late. Valery appeared to be rather kind and forgiving, after all. But in training, she was very different; strict even. This request was about simple Self-discipline, a pillar all Jedi had to Master on their paths of service to the Force. She sincerely hoped Briana would not disappoint.
So until her Padawan learner arrived, she would stand in the center of the training area, her twin lightsabers attached to her hilt, and mind and body ready for another day of hard training.

Briana felt like she was finally starting to adjust to life on Ossus and after days of scrubbing, her student quarters were even starting to feel cozy. In fact, most of her complaints as a whole had been very minimal lately. However, the clothing was a different matter altogether. Ever since starting on her Jedi journey, the young Corellian had all but refused to wear traditional Jedi robes, preferring to wear the everyday attire she wore on Naboo, even if it was deemed slightly immodest for a Jedi padawan.

Freshly delivered robes were carefully pressed and presented by one of the many service droids that roamed the grounds, but they remained stuffed in the corner with the rest of the clutter that hadn’t been organized yet, ignored and forgotten. Today would be no different, the newly-minted seventeen year old choosing to wear a pair of light shorts, a rather tight fitting tank top, and ankle high running boots. The vibrant blue and whites stood out against her complexion as she looked herself over in the refresher mirror before heading out at the biddening of Master Noble, single handedly tying back her long brown hair.

All these simple effects made Briana feel more secure with herself, the boots, the tight fitting top, the shorts and whippy pony, it added to a look that she usually kept reserved for her athletic training days back on Naboo. Now… this look would support her in her next challenge.

Mastering the Lightsaber.

It was perhaps one of the lessons that she was looking forward to learning the most, wanting to prove to herself that she could do it. Of course, she would probably continue to wonder if the skills were useful or not until she had to actually put it into practice.

Moving at a light jog, Briana thought that the path to the training grounds seemed shorter than what she remembered; of course, she’d been tired and worn out after doing nearly a three hour exploration of the surrounding area of the Enclave.

With a posture that showed she was ready for anything, she approached Valery.

Then immediately felt her posture begin to sink…

There was Valery, her master of choice, standing alone in the giant arena, her attire as dark as the gut feeling that had started to overcome her, the sorta feeling that made her want to pretend to twist an ankle or faint to get out of the whopping that was about to come.

Her eyebrows narrowed slightly in concentration, taking a moment to swallow down the fear inside her.

Hadn’t it only been a week ago when she’d challenged Valery about training her and Brandyn? Hadn’t it been only a few days ago that the over confident triplet had been gloating to Brandyn about how a lightsaber wouldn’t be so hard to learn?

Yes. That had all been her.
Now, she had to prove it. There wasn't any time to show weakness.

Clenching her fist, Briana approached her master, bending at the waist in a respectful bow.

“Good morning, Master Noble."

Hearing footsteps approach, Valery turned to meet the gaze of the young woman who stood at the side of the training area. With a quick glance up and down, she took note of the training attire Briana had chosen, but she made no comment about it, nor did her expression reveal what she was thinking. Again, she showed the colder seriousness she had in training.
Valery herself was wearing the typical outfit she wore in combat, believing it was vital to train in the gear that you planned to use in the real world. The dark, tight-fitting clothing was also simply quite comfortable to her.
Seeing the Padawan approach and bow to show respect did bring a brief smile to her face - a momentary break from the colder expression she had shown thus far. So much like Briana, Valery bowed at the waist in return and spoke after her posture straightened again.
"Good morning, Padawan Sal-Soren. It's good to see you." she said as her arms dropped by her sides, and her body language opened to show she was ready and willing to instruct.
"Today we're going to cover some training I believe you've been rather excited about. My goal is to figure out what type of styles may fit you, and provide you with further training in them. Of course, if you are extremely interested in Lightsaber Combat, I can teach you all Forms. But let's begin with something natural."
Valery then smirked faintly and shifted her foot about a shoulder-width apart while she kept her knees somewhat bent. She then unclipped the lightsaber from her belt and drew it into a two-handed hammer grip, the right hand closest to the emitter. The hilt would be positioned on her right side, around chest height, and with a flick of a switch, the violet blade ignited up into the air.
For those familiar, it was the Ataru opening stance.
"Before I teach you something new and more in-depth, let's see what you got. Feel free to start slow if you need to warm up, and if you have any questions before we begin - now is the time."

Briana remained steadfast in her posture, the words of her Master sinking in and settling around her shoulders. Without wasting a moment, Briana made her way over to the array of training sabers to choose which she would use for the duration of her time as a Padawan.

Each one had its own individual design, from simplistic silver shafts to more intricate finishes. Briana knew it was tradition that a training saber might find itself used in the hands of more than just one student, handed down from Knight to Padawan upon their own creation of the symbol of the Jedi. Briana's hand passed over the first row of hilts, unsure what exactly she should be looking for.

Was something supposed to jump out at her, and just scream 'ME'? Or was the Force supposed to aid her choice? Maybe it was not all that complicated, and she was over thinking this whole thing, merely needing to take whatever one just 'felt' right.

A slight panic swelled inside her, as nothing immediately caught her fancy.

Just grab one!

She reached for a silver plated hilt with elegant black detailing, but after turning it over in her hands, a dark chill coursed through her, sensing such a surge of anger that she immediately dropped it back down - staring at it in wide wonder. However, it was the second one after that, that caught her attention.

Compared to all of the others that were clean and fresh, this one was obviously chipped and worn. Most of the silver shine was gone, scored with scorch marks that were worn over the hilt from the clash of many a training saber, or indeed, perhaps even the real thing. Briana picked it up and felt its weight in her hand, turned it over. That same iconic smirk that she shared with her father, crossed her face.

This one felt right, almost like she'd always owned it.

Turning to Valery, she made her way back over with an obvious skip in her step. Valery had taken her stance in preperation.

Brisna moved to mimick her, then paused. Instead of getting in position, Briana's face scrunched up and she regarded her chosen lightsaber.

"Actually...I do have a question," she said, an inquisitive brow raising, taking in the brilliance of her Masters violet blade. Nervous, she chewed her lip. "I'm sure you've realized by now that I am a competitive person, and yes, I've very much been looking forward to this day ever since I got here... but, if we are keepers of the peace, then why do we even use a lightsaber? We are the good guys, right? Why do we need weapons? By igniting our blades, doesn't that ensure a continous cycle of violence?" The question would probably sound naïve, especially to someone like Valery, whom she was sure had seen the grittier side of the galaxy and likely been in many wars, herself.

To Briana it seemed a logical question. Their mother often regaled her and her siblings with old stories of the Jedi and their enemies when they were children, and it had always seemed there would be much less tragedy, had the Jedi looked for alternative routes.

Valery watched quietly as Briana moved to grab herself a training lightsaber, but tilted her head at how long it was taking. Most students would just grab one so they could quickly jump into training, but it seemed a bit more of a process with her Padawan. Whether it was a good or bad thing remained to be seen, but it certainly piqued the Master's interest.
What stood out even more, however, was the way she responded to the first hilt she took from the rack. She seemed to recoil after touching it and dropped it back down as quickly as she picked it up. For a moment, Valery sensed something strange, but she decided against mentioning it for now. She simply took a mental note of it and offered Briana a nod as she stepped in front of her inside the training area.
She began to transition into a similar stance... only to pause a moment later so she could ask a question. In response, Valery stepped out of her stance and held the blade low at her side, her gaze focused on the Padawan. While Briana seemed nervous about the question she asked, Valery seemed to appreciate it.
"We use lightsabers because there are people in this Galaxy who will oppress, enslave and hurt others whether they defend themselves or not. This Galaxy, in many ways, is a cruel place to be, and our place as Jedi is about protecting life and peace the best we can. Not just against forces of the Dark Side, but anything that seeks to disturb the balance of the Force." Valery explained, her tone rather void of emotion, as she felt she was stating simple facts.
"Since this reality isn't always easy to accept, I'll give you two examples. There are many more, but these are ones to remember," she stressed.
"Many Jedi these days are not as knowledgeable about the history of the Sith and their conflict against the Jedi, but there are some important details to be aware of. Their history begins with something we now call the Second Great Schism, an event where Jedi were found to be experimenting with the Dark Side and exiled. More specifically, they were using the Force to manipulate life in unnatural ways through alchemy, twisting animals and other living beings and bending them to their will."
"These exiled, fallen Jedi then started a war against the Jedi we call the Hundred Years Darkness. Eventually, they were defeated at the battle of Corbos, and the survivors were rounded up by the Republic, who wanted to execute them all and thereby end the threat. However, the Jedi convinced the Republic to show them mercy, and instead exile them into the unknown with the hope that these fallen Jedi would see the error in their ways."
"Instead, the exiled formed the Sith Empire and returned thousands of years later for revenge in a war we call the Great Hyperspace War. Again, they would be defeated, and again mercy was shown to the survivors, who were exiled."
She paused.
"And again, they returned thousands of years later to seek revenge. To attempt to break the peace, and force hundreds of worlds into submission or death once again."
Valery then took a small breath, "But not all danger comes from the Sith or followers of the Dark Side. Have you ever heard about Boz Pity?" Valery asked. "A long time ago, a species lived there called the Gargantelles. They were incredibly tall and strong, but sadly, they were discovered by the Hutts, who attempted to enslave the species."
"The Gargantelle managed to repel seven Hutt invasions, after which the Hutts convinced an army of war droids from a neighboring system to exterminate the Gargantelles. After about a decade of fighting, the entire Gargantelle species was extinct, but they left behind massive gravestones to honor their fallen."
"This is why the planet is now called the Graveyard Planet."
Valery then drew her blade back up, and assumed her stance once again, "We train with a lightsaber so we can protect ourselves, and so we can defend people who can't defend themselves against the many things out there willing to kill or enslave them. Does this answer your question?"
F7r9prE.png

Briana's posture was straight, attentive, her hands clenched at her sides while listening to all that Valery was trying to teach her. As the words of Valery's history lesson sunk in, it made her Masters points more understandable.

Yes, the Jedi were peacekeepers, but sometimes to keep the safety of those around you, you had to put your own safety in jeopardy to protect them, and the better trained you were - the better you could defend
them. A Jedi didn't seek out conflict, but you had to be ready for it. With a nod and a simple, "Yes," Briana indicated that she was satisfied with her Masters explanation and likewise eager to begin her lesson. Without being matched with the practical elements, philosophy would lose its meaning. At least, that was Briana's opinion; ready to concentrate her mind on learning how to flash around the technical gizmo in her hands.

Running her hand along the hilt, she triggered the combustible reaction of the lightsaber, a vibrantly strong blue blade of ever turning energy springing forward with that distinctive snap-hiss.

Ocean blue eyes bore into Valery, moving back into the same position she was in before and paying close watch to her Masters every movement.

Valery nodded at Briana's answer and slowly, the violet blade came back up in the same two-handed grip as before. The brunette assumed her stance again and looked straight into her Padawan's eyes with a cold, focused gaze. Combat was often as much a psychological fight as it was physical, and even though this was just training, Valery wanted Briana to take it seriously. She wanted there to be some pressure that could undermine the Padawan's performance, just the way real situations with great risk could.
"Very good, then show me what you've got."
With Briana standing in her own stance, Valery assumed her to be ready and since her Padawan made no move to initiate the fight, she was going to. This duel was meant to get an idea as to what type of style would suit her, so her plan was to test her in various ways. To open up, Valery exploded up into the air and towards her Padawan with great speed, carefully controlled to push Briana out of her comfort zone, but not be too instantly overwhelming.
Especially since she hadn't even warmed up yet.
As Valery drew closer, her body twisted and a fairly powerful diagonal sweep came down, aimed to strike across the woman's torso. The way Briana would respond could tell Valery much about what kind of styles could possibly fit, so the duel was truly beginning now.
F7r9prE.png

Hard and effective training was what Briana needed, grabbing her attention with the quick and fluent attack Valery launched with.

Trusting the Force as she'd been taught during the group training sessions on Coruscant, Briana allowed the Force to flow through her. She knew Valery's training was far superior than hers and would likely make a mockery out of any attacks she tried to perform from any of the forms that she barely knew. Shii-Cho was what she knew best, but not what she would have preferred using.

She would start purely on the defensive, a position she did not like to be in, but hoped that over time it might wear Valery down.

With an angled sweep downward, and her left foot taking a step back, the blue electrical current of her training saber clashed beneath with a quick parry to block the blow, the training blades nearly invisible blue light casting a glow across her entire torso. Blades cross locked, Briana planted her right foot forward and grounded herself, pressing in to try and take control of the charge.

She felt the strength of her opponent in her arms, her feet starting to slip and forcing her to spin out to the right.

Balance was brought back into play as she centered, lunging forward on the offense this time and allowing the Force to propel her.

Blade raised high, she struck downward in a straight line, aimed at the other females left shoulder.

Briana had chosen not to be aggressive towards her Master, instead choosing to play it defensively and look for an opportunity to counter-attack. While that could simply be the result of her wanting to play it safe in a duel against Valery, it was also a characteristic trait of Form V — to be offensive through persistent counter-attacking and powerful clashes.
Valery smirked briefly as she caught on, and decided to play into the potential of it being a good form by pushing her strength into the clash that followed after her attack. With a combination of natural and Force-enhanced strength, she tried to match Briana and push just beyond it. This was exactly how her own Master once trained her — always pushing her just a bit beyond what she could handle, and thus forcing her to adapt and grow. Slowly but surely, it would elevate the Padawan to new horizons.
She kept this going until the moment Briana's feet began to slip, which is when the Padawan broke contact to avoid losing her balance. It was at this moment that she recognized a few things that she could teach her later too if she were to pursue Djem So further.
Then the woman's counter-attack came, and Valery quickly turned into it while her lightsaber came up horizontally. With her own use of Form V, she caught the blade in a powerful lock and maintained pressure, hoping to force the clash long enough for her to perform a Fluid Riposte, one of the Form's more advanced techniques, by transitioning into a quick blade twirl that sent the violet plasma diagonally down towards the side of the woman while the sudden release of pressure forced her own blade away.
In a real fight, the head would have been the better target, but she also wanted Briana to pick up on sparring etiquette, and avoid potentially harmful strikes.
F7r9prE.png

Caught off guard by the sudden flourish and probably a little closer than she needed to be, Briana lost balance. Wide eyed, she tried in vain to block the incoming attack, only for her blade to swipe at air. Her abdomen took the brunt of the impact, causing her to lose her footing and go tumbling backwards into the dirt. The collision was enough to jar the lightsaber from her hands, sending it halfway across the training circle.

Brandyn would love this...

Undefended, defeated, the Padawan laid there a moment to catch her breath before pushing up onto her elbows. The Corellian raised her hands to yield, red faced, she hung her head, taking labored breaths.

"I don't know that I can do this," Briana said between breaths, unsure if she felt conflicted because she'd lost and this was another subdued tantrum, or if it was something a little deeper and more complex. "When we were dueling, I could feel myself easily slipping into it, but it doesn't feel like me. I told Brandyn earlier this week that learning a lightsaber wouldn't be hard, but I was showing off because I didn't want him to think he was better than me. I only came here today, to prove I was better than him." She tried to find a spot on the floor, the one that allowed her to not have to make eye contact with her master. "I'm just an athlete, a tech head... not a Jedi warrior... or some defender of the peace...that is Brandyn. I'm no good at this."

Valery watched as the Fluid Riposte caught her Padawan by surprise, and sent her down to the ground. With this being a spar, she didn't put any pressure on her opponent and simply held her blade down while she looked the woman in the eyes. Seeing the hands come up for surrender, Valery tilted her head lightly and disengaged her lightsaber.
"Not with that attitude." Valery began as she stepped forward, her serious dueling demeanor shifting to something calmer, and more comforting.
"Not all Jedi spend equal amounts of time learning how to fight with a lightsaber, but all Jedi have to grasp the basics. Not to be better than someone else, but to be in control and capable of defending others. You're not going to help anybody if you can't even protect yourself." Valery said before offering Briana a hand to pull herself up.
"You have it in you to be good at this, to be a defender of the peace, but it's not going to come easy and you must first believe in yourself. Your motivations have to stem from more than sibling rivalry because it's not going to last forever. But the need to better yourself will last until the end."
Valery then offered her Padawan a smile. "This lesson was just for me to get an idea about what you're like in a fight. I have a good idea now, and I can offer you more training to get better. But you must be determined; you can't give up. A Jedi must conquer Defeatism."
A slight smirk then appeared on her face.
"Oh, and to yield in a spar, say 'Solah'. I understood what you meant, but it's not the common approach to yield between Jedi."

In the moments that she sat there catching her breath, stewing, listening to Valery's words, Briana became dimly aware of how exhausted she felt from just a few minutes of whacking around a glowy stick. It was a feeling that was both foreign and annoying. Three times Naboo Athletic Champion and gold-medal winner in the humanity youth athletics, exhausted? Perhaps, she realized, it was only her mind that caused herself to perspire so quickly. The rivalry against her two preferred siblings was her driving point, but here, the only competitor she faced was herself. She could feel tears gather unbidden at the edge of her vision.

"My Mom used to go on and on when I was growing up about how I needed to be serious like Brandyn and more obedient like Blaire. Never when either of them were around. The problem is, I've always been more like my Dad. Used to my own world, don't want to take things seriously unless I have to, problems with committing..." she reached out and took Valery's hand, pulling herself up to her feet and giving a loud sniff as she wiped her eyes with the hem of her top. "I've never had to find my own strength of will outside of those reasons. I suppose I just need to get a grip." Closing her eyes and concentrating through the Force, she willed the lightsaber back to her hand and gazed up at Valery.

"If you really think I can do this, if I can help others, then..." she took a deep breath, an unwilling smile touching her lips. "I'm willing to do whatever it takes."

So she stood, ready to continue the lesson, unknowing that somewhere deep along the paths of the Force, her decision then and there had set another stone in place of the twisting mists of the future.

"I do believe you can do it, Briana. If you really set your mind to something, I think you can achieve anything." Valery said as she pulled the woman back up to her feet. Her expression had softened completely, especially after seeing her Padawan tear up a little. Her words were spoken with honesty as well — even if she had relied on others to commit to something, the drive she had when committed was something any Master would want to see in their students.
All she needed was to find that drive from a different source.
"I'm willing to do whatever it takes."
Valery smirked and placed her hand on Briana's shoulder, in both a comforting and encouraging way. "Good, we're going to take a small break for now. I'll make us some food and we can talk a little about future plans. My thoughts are currently that teaching you Form V more in-depth would be a good start. But I want to get your thoughts on it as well."
She then withdrew her hand and gestured for the Temple.
"I think some extra physical training might help too. Not that you aren't athletic, but your style is very demanding. Maybe building some extra muscle and stamina will do you good." she grinned and took her Padawan back towards the Temple, where she hoped to discuss the future of her training over a proper meal.
