STRENGTHS
  • Bird of Prey: Like all Interceptors the TIE Interceptor is designed specifically to counter more common starfighters. This purpose built design, refined over centuries of re-invention, re-imagining, and new technologies has produced a powerful, capable, and intimidating Interceptor design.
  • Ease of Use: One of the main draws of TIE variant fighters is the simple control scheme, an easy entry point for many beginner pilots.
WEAKNESSES
  • Outrun the Blasters: Like the common TIE Fighter, the TIE Interceptor lacks shields making it a very vulnerable craft. Pilots are simply expected to not get hit with all the extra credits being poured into the engines.
  • Support Your Own Life: Life support systems are expensive and bulky. To save both funds and space on the thin and agile craft it was decided that pilots must bring their own life support with htem, typically attached to their suit.

Starfighters are ubiquitous across the galaxy, a main stay in galactic warfare. Many have struggled to find ways to deal with them from corvettes armed to the teeth with point defense weapons and light turbo lasers and simple laser cannons, to mine fields, to shrapnel launches, to fielding their own fighters. Interceptors are the pinnacle of that final approach, to design a fighter specifically designed to kill other starfighters, and the TIE Interceptor is a cheap easy to manufacture solution to fill the Interceptor role.

While the TIE Interceptor may not be utilized across every fleet engagement it is viewed as necessary when going up against carriers or starbases with a large hangar capacity. The attacking side, especially when in the orbit of a planetoid, is always at the disadvantage as defenders typically have more space to store weapons and fighters. Thus when attacking such locations most regular TIE Fighters are replaced with Interceptors, allowing what few Fighters can be brought to be sure to be more effective at dealing with enemy craft. Against corvettes or other larger vessels the TIE Interceptor is however practically useless, relying more on bomber support or other more capable small-craft to deal the real damage.
