V’shar - Night

“Reveal yourself, Doomed One!” The humanoid ordered as he stepped into the artificial light of the alley. He was Ka’hren, like ninety-nine percent of the sentient population on V’shar. He had grey skin, humongous teeth, sunken eyes, and a crested forehead. He was a mean looking member of a mean looking species. At least that was what Ran thought when she took in his visage from her hiding place in the shadows.

“I know you’re here. Don’t think you’ll evade me for much longer!” He spat. The blaster in his long and furry arms was held high. Adrenaline heightened his awareness but frustration would dull his reaction time. Ran could feel his battling emotions imprinting on the force, and still she did not act. She would not risk giving herself away just yet, not when her objective was so close. She’d stick to the shadows at least until she reached Kita, the Ka’hren mother who’d taken the biggest risk of her life to summon the Jedi to take in her force-sensitive son.

The summons Ran had received wasn’t for her, or rather it wasn’t for any Jedi in particular, but it was for a Jedi. Ran had just been the closest to V’shar at the time, or so she thought. The summons she had received sounded desperate, and upon some research Ran could understand why. The Ka’hren were a highly religious people. They were both isolationists and religious supremacists. To them, Kita’s decision to summon the Jedi at all, to acknowledge the force, would be considered a blasphemous crime to her people, and still she did it. She took a risk for whatever reason struck her and that inspired Ran. Inspired Ran to reach this point, a stone’s throw away from where Kita would be waiting with her baby boy. It wouldn’t take long for Ran to reach them; she just had to deal with the situation before her first.

“I grow weary of this game! Reveal yourself, whatever you are, and I may let you live!” The blaster wielding Ka’hren cried in frustration as he stood just a few short meters from Ran’s hiding place in the alley behind a half-ruined wall. Ran didn’t flinch at his threats or proximity. She relaxed with the force and readied herself to use it to cause a ruckus behind her pursuer, but before she could his search was interrupted by another.

“High Priest Xiv! I’m sorry to interrupt your search, but we have just found evidence of a second interloper. You must come and see for yourself.” The meek sounding Ka’hren grabbed the attention of Ran’s pursuer, the High Priest Xiv. She used that distraction to make a silent exit. By the time the High Priest finally checked behind the ruined wall it would’ve been too late. Ran was already gone.

As Ran stuck to the shadows of the interlocking alleys, she thought of the second interloper. She wondered if she was the first, who might the second be. If she could help them, or assist them in any way, she would, but first she traveled onward to Kita and her boy.

The Southeastern sector of the galaxy had always been lawless.

And always been Jonyna's domain. Going back to the days of the Hutt Cartels, she had been a vigilante in sixteen systems before she became a rebel legend.

She'd tracked the high priest for about a month now across the planet. Keeping her distance, keeping herself unknown.

But she'd made a mistake. She'd assumed she was alone on this quest.

Watching from the shadow of an alley, she frowned slightly at the idea that she was spotted. She needed to reposition. Climbing up a wall with her claws, she looked down to where she had been before.

Who was out this way? V'shar wasn't exactly a world on everyone's map.

For a moment, she reached out in the Force.

As she continued skulking in the shadows of V'Shar alleys, The force touched Ran. She could feel in it a familiar presence. It was a presence she hadn't felt in quite some time, and it was one she would welcome. Ran reached out in kind, back to that Cathar Jedi Master she had once served alongside on the Jedi Council of the past.

The message she transmitted through the force was not one of words but of warm feelings, determined intentions, and an open invitation. She hoped Jonyna would accept. The child of Kita was in danger, and the High Priest was becoming a thorn in Ran's side. Another Jedi, even one not half as skilled as the Master Si, would be a world of help to Ran on this foreign planet where Zealotry was the rule. Its only and most dangerous rule.

The message hit her like a truck. Ran.

She'd not seen another one of her fellow council members in months. The only one she kept in contact with was Corazona von Ascania Corazona von Ascania , and even then Cora had become part of the High Republic's order.

Jonyna had not. She'd pretty openly kept her distance. Kept herself away from the shining gold of the High Republic.

Luckily, Jonyna had other ways of speaking to Ran.

Her hand reached into her coat, lightly touching a pin on the lining of the coat. A moment of meditation, and the message was sent.

<What's the plan?>

That's all she needed to ask. There was so much she could say, but that could be said once things settled. Once they were back to safety.

<What's the plan?>

Ran jumped slightly at the message, and as if a light bulb went on in her mind she clutched the pin she had used to keep her cloak closed. She had forgotten that the item affixed to it was no mere memento but a powerful fetish of the force once gifted to her by the very same Jedi Master who was so close in proximity to her now. Jonyna's telepathic voice in the mind of Ran rang clearer than if they had spoken in person. Ran focused on the pin and on Jonyna's presence. <The plan is to meet with the child and his mother, sneak them offworld as quickly as possible, and if I can help it avoid a conflict with the High Priest.> Ran answered knowing the pair of Jedi would spare their pleasantries for a more appropriate time.

<I sense you are near, Jonyna. Are you here to save the child as well?> The question came off of Ran's mind, as she turned from the alleyway and onto another dimly lit V'shar street. The padding of bare feet onto a stone and mortar road sounded as Ran went still watching and listening to several Ka'hren navigate the dark head. They were just a few of the cogs in the machine that was the Ministry, but as members of the Security Force they were important ones. No doubt they were charged to search for and apprehend the interlopers or worse.

A pause, before the answer.

<...not exactly.>

The truth was, Jonyna was here for an entirely different reason.

The religious order that had ruled this planet wasn't as ironclad in it's control than it once had been. The Wild Space Rebellion had kept active across this sector, and word had gotten out. The people were learning that there was a better way to live.

And to a religious order, that was dangerous.

Jonyna's mission had been a relatively straight forward one. The resistance movement of the planet wanted to cut the head off the snake.

She was here to kill the high preist.

<...if you can get them to my ship on the far side of the city, we should be able to get them out safely. My mission is to take out the high preist. I've got locals who want to breakaway from the religious order, and establish a democratic government. To do that, they need to destabilize the order. Best way to do that is a power vaccuum.>
