Question Thread Reactions

Kitter Bitters

Keeper of Bitter Tales from the Galaxy
I’ve had a few conversations now about reactions to threads. I mean those little emoji react buttons we click.

Some people have said the “like” one is passive aggressive for when you don’t like a thread? Others have said the “umm what” makes them feel bad.

Am I using these wrong? I don’t want any of you lovely people to feel bad. I’ve been operating under the assumption they are all just part of the IC or to acknowledge what you are reading.

From my subjective experience the lack of any real negative emojis has created a sort of strange effect with some of them can and have been viewed as negative. The 'Like' react is sort of redundant with the 'love' react. Same with the 'Wow' and 'OMG' reacts.

I've felt that in the absence of the old cringe react 'Umwhat' has effectively taken its place.

'Like' reacting is often perceived as passive aggressive or sarcastic. Where a post was read but not enjoyed. I believe this happened to give it a unique identity from the 'love' react.

I've seen 'like' and 'umwhat' be viewed with greater contempt than the angry react.

That raises an interesting research question about reactions that the professor in me is going to file away for the future.

To me though even the “angry” react would be more IC. Like if a Sith slapped Kat across the face and I “angry” it that’s not to the OOC writer. That’s like it’s on bisch IC

I show my appreciation for your post by reading it and spending my free time and portions of my life on the same website as you

I've gotten the passive aggressive "um what" and "haha" reactions to some things I've said in OOC discussions and honestly it just feels stupid and lazy. But that's the point, and really it's just a stupid thing at the bottom of your post. It's a hallmark back to old forums where likes = correct/good. Reactions used to be a bigger thing when people had their reaction score visible and I'm glad it's gone. I feel bad sometimes because I think most people use likes and whatnot as a means to tell people that they've read their post (myself included) and that if I don't do that then I'm somehow saying their post isn't good but it is good and you guys are doing a great job and I appreciate all of you writing here I love you all except you yeah you fuck you but the rest of you I'm really glad are here on Chaos still after a decade of being a fuckin goofball.

please like and react

A react is a react doesn't matter the face you put on it. It Doesn't matter if someone is being passive aggressive. It doesn't matter if someone did to make you feel bad or something. The old cringe react didn't matter either.

You know why?

It means someone took some time out of there day to glimpse your post, move their mouse (or thumb) to the react and make a choice on emoji. Your post stirred an emotion in them good or bad but it wasn't indifferent or uninterested. If it was indifferent or uninterested they wouldn't have wasted their time.

From my perspective that's a win, you made them look, you made them react. It doesn't matter their intent, you got something out of them there time, their look. If they feel they wasted their time and gave their react out of negativity that is on them it has nothing to do with you.

A react is react you got eyes on your post and that is all that matters.
