Kat's breath caught softly as Connel's fingers brushed her collar, the weight of the cross settling against her skin like a promise. For a moment, words failed her; the air between them felt thick with everything unsaid , fear, hope, and something warmer that had been quietly building for weeks.

Her eyes lowered to the pendant, thumb grazing its worn edges as though she could feel the memory of the hands that had passed it down. She knew how much this meant to him, just from the stories he told about his father. The way he spoke about Caltin left no doubt that his dad was his hero, and to part with something so precious, it was a true sign of the trust Connel placed in her. When she looked back up at him, her usual calm had softened.

"Connel…"
she said quietly, her voice almost lost under the distant hum of engines. "This is… more than just a little something. It's a promise. And I don't take promises lightly."

She reached out, fingers brushing his wrist, a silent, grounding gesture. "I'll keep it safe until I can give it back."

A small smile touched her lips, not quite hiding the glimmer of emotion in her eyes. "I promise."

Caelan said nothing at first, letting her words drown into the crackle of the nearby fire. She was full of sarcasm and scorn, but he did not respond to it in a similar fashion. His younger self would have, but that was some time ago, and with age came experience. Might seem foolhardy to think such for a twenty year old, but he had seen much more in those twenty years than some saw in a lifetime, and a lot of it had been things he wished he'd never seen. Instead, he breathed slow and deeply, his eyes watching the fire instead of her, for now.

When he did speak, his words began soft; voice low and even.

"As one Jedi to another, I will not quarrel with your judgments of me. If I am naïve, so be it. If I am a fool, then let me remain one. Better to cling to foolish hope than to abandon it for the ease of despair."

He let those words sink in for a moment before continuing.

"The Siren's song you describe, I have heard. I have seen good men follow it until they mistook their scars for wisdom, their surrender for clarity. You speak of it as though it cannot be resisted. But I have chosen to resist, not because I am blind to the darkness, but because I refuse to let the darkness tell me who I must become."

The fire popped and hissed, as if uncomfortable with his speech, but he merely watched it. Fire was not alive in the truest since of the word, but it ate as though it were a ravenous beast, and would consume any fuel placed before it, much like the machine of war. It seemed fitting that they stood near it and spoke of the topic they did. Before he continued, his bearing and tone shifted, becoming more regal, straight backed.

"As a King, I am not free to think only of myself. My survival is not mine alone, it belongs to the people who entrust me with their lives. I cannot revel in the glory of battle, nor surrender to hopelessness, for both are a betrayal to those I serve. They do not need a ruler drunk on bloodshed, nor one broken by despair. They need a sovereign who endures, even mocked as naïve, even dismissed as a fool, so long as hope endures with him. You may not recall my name, you may never care to, and that is no burden. I do not need remembrance. I need only that my people, and my children, live."

He turned to face her then, face focused, eyebrows even. No malice or disdain, just a cool focus on the situation at hand, and his obvious dealing with some of Pantoran import, an older being who viewed his youth as testament to his experience rather than measuring actual experience.

"You ask if I would run to my foes and beg them to yield. Perhaps I would. And if that plea spares a single life, if one family is kept whole, then let me be mocked for it. Let it be called weakness. I will bear it gladly. For my worth is not measured in victories won or enemies slain, but in how many are spared from the pyre. That is the only triumph worth enduring for."

It was a bit nerve wracking, doing this. He wasn’t sure why, but it felt right to do. Sure. Omega Squad were his brothers and sisters, he had Buster, he had his mother… and he did consider Corazona von Ascania Corazona von Ascania like the little sister he never had, like his father did with Ala… but… this?

Kat was practically speechless, and it was endearing. The reaction made him smile.

I’m glad.

It was his turn to look down for a moment.

I don’t know what it is, but I never worried or cared about this sort of thing until today. Just something about today hit differently. It did for Buster… poor guy always hates to see me go, but this was different… a lot different. My mother even noticed. That’s when she gave it to me… He wouldn’t tell her about how Chrysa nudged him to do this with her. It was endearing, but embarrassing.

After another moment, he looked up and half-smiled.

You’d just better come back to be able to give that back to me.

His smile was again bit sheepish.

"No-one wants to see a kid take a hit."

Blunt. Less of his little joyful tone and just straight to the heart of things. But it was the truth. It didn't matter how resilient a kid was, if they got knocked down, people would despair. That was what Lestra's issue was. He just had to power through it and act as if everything was fine. When it wasn't. Nothing was fine. Everything was wrong.

"...I don't mean this as an insult, but your respect doesn't help Acier. You might think I don't qualify as a kid. But there's still plenty who do."

Also true. He was still a Padawan. Force, if people were technical about it, he wasn't even a Padawan. He didn't have a master. He didn't have a teacher. He was more like a stray dog. No-one wanted to claim him. Instead he just mulled around, acting as if he belonged. Sauntered around. Though he tried not to dwell on that. It was harder to act if you focused on yourself too much.

"...Bit rich for you to be talking about community. Aren't you the one sulking over here alone? Well. You got the droid. But you get my point. Without me being here, you'd be all "Grumble Grumble. Scowly Scowl."

There was at least part of the actual Lestra coming out. The role he played was an exaggerated version of himself...but it was still him. The jokes. The somewhat teasing. It was still him. This was just a more...subdued version of it all as he stared off into the distance.

Ace didn't flinch at Lestra's sudden bluntness, if anything, he respected it. But Ace remained firm in his own conviction.

"No. You're right. Nobody wants to see it." He paused, then his gaze slid sideways, sharper now. "So show them you aren't. Stop leaning on the kid excuse. You take the hits, you get back up, you prove it. People stop seeing the age and start seeing the experience."

He shifted, rolling his shoulders. "I'm not much older than you." He pointed toward the scar on his cheek, no pride in it, no boasting. Just a plain, heavy truth. "Nobody's called me a kid in a long time."

Then Lestra said his respect didn't help. Fair enough, if that's how he felt. Respect, for him, wasn't comfort or kindness. It wasn't a tool to ease someone's doubts. It was just recognition. The only thing he could offer without lying. Words like you'll be fine or it gets better rang hollow. Respect was different. It was proof that he'd seen someone for who they were, and that they'd earned their place in the firelight instead of standing outside it. But alas...

"Wasn't trying to help. Was just calling it how I see it."

When the blue-haired sort-of Padawan called him out on sulking. Ace shook his head, a fraction of a grin tugged as he leaned back, resting his hands behind his head.

"I'm not the one out here trying to give folks hope." He shot back "Besides... do as I say, not as I do, yeah?"

"Not everyone sees the experience. Some people think they know best. That their experience is the best."

Of course, the lad raised an eyebrow at Acier's comment about not being much older than Lestra. He gave a small shrug of his shoulders at that, his eyes still focused on the horizon.

"Huh. Remind me not to start scowling then. I don't want to look an extra twenty years older. Someone needs to keep their good looks."

More teasing. More...Lestra starting to relax, even if he didn't mean to. He shook his head all the same before narrowing in on something Acier had said as Lestra turned his attention over towards him, almost immediately jabbing his finger out to point Acier's lightsaber.

"You carry one of those around and you inspire people...or terrify them. Whether you like it or not. Lightsabers carry weight, contrary to the name. It's why I don't use one. I don't want to give off the wrong idea."

Now what was the wrong idea one might ask? Lestra didn't know himself. He just knew that lightsabers carried attention. Weight. People looked to them. Expected things out of those who carried them. And whilst they could inspire hope in people, they could also instill fear and terror in others because of the Sith. It's why Lestra carried his spear. It had no weight associated with it. It was a weapon. A tool. And that was all.

"But don't worry. I won't do as you do. Like I said, I don't want to look like some scowling adult. I still have to preserve my youthful look for as long as I can."

"It's an old habit of mine, especially around people I haven't met. I only mean it with respect," Silas reassured, his tone calm and sincere. Slowly, he folded his arms and turned his attention to what the girl had brought with her. To a knight like him, it was unusual to see a Jedi carrying a shield. More often than not, he relied solely on his saber, speed and precision were his defense.

"Hmm... it looks heavy," he remarked, raising a curious brow. "But if that's what you're comfortable with, then who am I to judge?" His eyes lingered on the shield, thoughtfully studying its design.

"Just make sure you know how to use it," he added after a moment, his voice firm. "Being unprepared will get you killed out there."

He crouched briefly to take a sip of water, then glanced over his shoulder and nodded. "Well said. There's always something to learn, something to prepare for when you're a Jedi. The more you train, the more you'll be ready when things fall apart."

Straightening up, Silas faced her fully again.

"One of the best ways to prepare is by facing stronger, more experienced opponents. You might be at a disadvantage, sure, but that's where you learn, where you grow. If you're willing," he offered, "I can help with that."

Runar stood, his hands brushing off the snow that accumulated on his robes as he glanced over towards the padawan, her words still filled with a certain idealism of the world. He gave a small shake of his head as he thought about all the pains that were to come if the galaxy continued to follow the path it was on, how many Padawans like her would truly realize the harshness that lay in reality.

A faint smile appeared at the corners of his mouth as he glanced over at her, "Of course, we can most certainly stop and get something warm to fill our stomachs after being outside in the weather like this."

The man's footsteps seemed to glide across the snow, where most would have footsteps that lay behind them in the snow; none appeared behind him. His feet seemed to glide over the snow-covered ground instead of sinking into it. Most would not notice such a small occurrence, but a keen eye would spot this like an eyesore.

Runar let his attention fall back to Zaiya once more, "We have talked too much about what I think, young Padawan, what about you? There is much on the horizon we have to look forward to, and much that we should stay wary of. What is on the mind of one such as yourself?" His words filled with curiosity, his normal deception in everyday conversation falling by the wayside as he talked to the young Lovalla.

"Great!!" Zaiya beamed as she popped to her feet with a little flounce of color and bioluminescence and a beamig grin! She ambled along beside him, a bubble of cheerful energy as she continued to chirp on with the enthusiasm of a songbird.

"Oh, I don't mind talking about what you think. I mean, I've been chattering plenty about my own thoughts on emotions and all that. And well… as a Lovalla, emotions are practically all that I am." She gestured to herself with a crooked giving a sheepish grin.

"I'm basically a walking mood ring,"
she admitted with a laugh. "Everyone can tell how I'm feeling if they manage to figure out what all the colors mean." Her glow rippled playfully over her rosy golden skin as if proving her point.

Zaiya gae a soft hum as she mused on his question on what was going on with her lately and on her mind.

"So what goes through my mind? Oh, everything. The usual things and the new things. What's my next meal? What do I need to practice for training? What do I even want to specialize in? Is Aris hungry and should I bring him food?" Her thoughts spilled in a lively jumble, one question tumbling after another.

But then the glow muted slightly, the edges of her mottled spots deepening into bronze and citrine ripples edged in a silvery hue in empathic contemplation.

"But also the serious matters… like how many people will need help in the battles to come. And how I can be ready to do my best for them."

"It could be heavier. This one's meant to be made out of Songsteel. Trying to figure out what design fits me."

Reina bashed the handle of her sword against the shield gently. She wasn't used to fighting with something in her offhand, so that's partly what she was working on as well. It was better than having something like a Phrik shield like someone had offered her.

"I've been training with other weapons. Reliance on a lightsaber just means you'll be helpless against something a Lightsaber can't combat...Plus hey, if I can't cut them through their armour, I can bash their face in with it."

A small cheeky and fangy grin came to Reina's face at that. Violence might not entirely be the Jedi way, but Reina did find some comfort in the idea of bashing some kind of imperial or Dark Sider's face in with a chunk of metal. Not that she'd ever go out of her way to do it. No. Not at all. She was...perfectly controlled.

Yet as she listened to the other Jedi, Reina found her hands clenching around her weapons tighter and tighter as the grin fell from her face and her eyes focused on the wall ahead of herself for a moment.

"My master said I fight the weak, whilst I'm strong. She's wrong. I'm nothing but weak. I can't help but learn from the strong. I can't beat them. But...that's why I want to carry this shield. Not to beat the strong. But to protect the weak. Like me."

And with that, Reina swivelled around on the heel of her foot to face the other Jedi. Practice made perfect at the end of the day. And she had to prove Colette wrong. Or at least the opinion that she believed Colette had about her.

Runar let his gaze fall upon the Lovalla once more, his eyes noticing the change of colors, her bioluminescent radiating different colors back and forth, as if the colors of the rainbow spread across her face with each shifting moment as her mood went from one way to the other.

His brow raised gently in thought, "How does that make you feel? Everyone else being able to read you like a book? Figuring out what colors mean, and then they can always know what you are holding in your heart? Have you ever wanted to be able to keep a secret without your whole body screaming the truth, no matter how hard you tried to hide it?" He asked her, his curiosity piqued by this thought.

The thought of everyone being able to see everything he had held in his heart, no matter how hard he tried to hide it, horrified him somewhat. His past rose once more before he set it to the back of his mind. The icy winds of Eshan seemed to grow ever colder as a shiver went down his spine, as he shook the thought from his mind. It was rare that he shared what he held on the inside, and the fact that she was able to draw it out of him so easily...

As their feet hit the hard durasteel floors, he shook his coat off once more as he turned towards the Lovalla, "Sometimes it is just a matter of who we can help in the small things we do, instead of always reaching for grand gestures. We will always remember when a great battle happens, and this memory will be shared with thousands who experienced it. But the small moments that happen during the chaos are only shared with those who were there to experience that, and will be the memories that are cherished forever."

His gaze shifted down the halls, the whole reason he had left the confines was to get out of the claustrophobic feelings he got from existing in such a place for so long, anxiety rising as he shook the feeling away as best as he could.

Think About the Hot Coco.

Katarine nodded sincerely. She knew what he meant. Something about this looming battle just seemed off. Maybe it was the fact that most of the galaxy was getting ready to fight, or maybe it was those terrifying plans the Empire had released. Or maybe it was that Katarine had finally found someone to connect with and didn't want to lose that. At the realization she mentally kicked herself. Attachments were forbidden for this very reason, but how could you let your friends go to war without attachment?

You'd just better come back to be able to give that back to me.

She nodded and tried to smile. "And you just make sure you stay standing so you can come get it back."

It was a promise between the two of them. There really didn't need to be any other words. They both had a job to do and they could only hope that the Force would guide them back together.
