A shadow was a rough path to walk, she knew that and now she understood why his mother thought he worked too much. That type of work was dangerous, even more so than some of the other paths a Jedi could take. She could understand a father not wanting his son to do it. Her thoughts drifted towards what she would want for her own children and understandably she felt like a simple farm life was way safer than anything a Jedi would be doing, especially a shadow.

When he said it was her turn she had to think for a moment. The sounds of the planet around them were peaceful, even with Buster adding his two cents into the mix.

"I specialized as a Jedi Investigator before. Spent most of my time in the criminal underworld. Trained at the academy with CorSec. Started hunting serial killers. It was so normal for a while, fighting crime and helping where I could. Then the Rebel Alliance needed everyone it could get and I ended up in the mix. Afterwards I kept hunting criminals, especially war criminals and eventually ended up in stasis. Now... here I am."

As she explained her past, he thought about what she was saying, empathizing what it was like. She could never truly trust someone, having to investigate and “hunt”, that must have been a hard life. It made sense as to why her and his father, or even mother had never met. He realized how her life must have been shaped by the constant need to be cautious and reserved. It was no wonder she had developed such a strong sense of independence and self-reliance. He admired her resilience but also felt a tinge of sadness for the life she had endured. It was clear that her experiences had shaped her into the person she was today, but he couldn’t help but wonder how different things might have been if circumstances had been kinder to her.

Sounds like you had a lot going on. I mean, at least I could take the mask off. You always had to be on. Empathy wasn’t his strong suit by any means, but she was someone who had been through a lot and still, even if she tried to hide it, allowed herself a level of hopefulness. You’re stronger than I think I am. A smirk later, he realized it sounded funnier than he thought it was initially.

His comment made her shake her head. “Believe me I’m not.”

It was the truth. After her husband left her Katarine had sunk into a deep depression that turned into substance abuse. As it turned out the darkside was the best mind altering substance she could get, thanks to a blood mutation , so she spent her time in the company of a dark Jedi. His presence clouded everything for her, allowing her to block out her pain, her past, and unfortunately her duties as a Jedi. A young padawan was killed as a result of her actions. Whatever it appeared on the surface Katarine knew how weak she truly was.

“I would love to tell you how great I was but the truth is I’ve made some pretty big mistakes. “

There was no sense explaining them. She hadn’t admitted that part of her life to anybody yet.

She glanced sideways at him, feeling the topic of conversation had grown a little dark for her tastes.

“I think you’ve convinced me to stay and help. At least for now. You will have to tell me whose in charge here so I can make it official.”

Valery pressed close as his arms wrapped around her, her head resting against his chest while they swayed together. The warmth of him, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, eased the weight she always carried. "They do love us very much," she said, before releasing a soft breath. "Even when we're away, they never let us forget it."

Her gaze lifted after a moment, the smirk tugging back at her lips. "What do you mean by that, hm? Are you making fun of my navigational skills?" She poked a finger lightly into his chest before slipping her hand into his, tugging him gently toward the edge of the dance floor.

As they stepped out into the night, the crisp air met them and the stars stretched wide above. Valery laughed, her orange eyes alight as she turned to him. "Race to the top of the hill?" she challenged, already moving with a playful grin. She didn't think twice about the dress she wore, the way it caught the moonlight as she darted ahead, focused only on the freedom of the moment with him.

That... and the desire to beat him.

I don’t but that’s okay. That can be a conversation for another time if you ever want to. They had only just met and it wouldn’t be fair to press, besides, he wasn’t sure that he was prepared to share too much about himself. Any more than everyone else seemed to know about him at least. You’re alive, you’re here, you’ve done something right. Live your life on mistakes and you’ll miss the point of gatherings like this. A shrug, he knew he sounded like his father there.

He understood the glare.

Master Valery Noble Valery Noble . She’d be the one to talk to.

Did another one just flake out on you? Idiot.

"I would never, you're actually quite skilled at navigating a ship. Not a remote, though." It was a set up. The smile on his face explained as much, as if he knew she'd mention her navigational skills in some way for him to tease her about the holoscreen at home. The teasing smile didn't fade in the slightest, even as they made their way out to the balcony.

Which was about where the smile faded.

In an instant Valery was off in a mad sprint up the nearby hill, and he could only watch in amazement at just how much effort she'd chosen to put into beating him in a run. In that dress. He shook his head just a bit before he hopped the railing to start to chase after her. Competative, even to the point she forgot everything else.

It was why he loved her so.

"I didn't think you were planning such a show, you know!"

Vess let herself be led, feet moving with precision. There was no flash, no theatrics just a steady, practiced rhythm that spoke of someone used to adapting quickly, not performing. She wasn't exactly relaxed, not in the way dancers were supposed to be, but she didn't resist the motion either. Her hand settled easily into his, light but certain, like she'd decided just for now not to second-guess the moment.

When he gave his warning Vess tilted her head slightly and gave him an amused look that. "Good," she said, the corner of her mouth lifting upward as she teased him. "I prefer my dance partners a little reckless. Keeps things interesting."

She felt the pause in his motion and the brief hesitation as his hand hovered near her hip. She stepped into his space without missing a beat, letting his hand fall on her hip. Just a subtle, silent answer. Her hand rested gently in his, fingers curling in loosely, letting him set the pace.

Then came the name, late but offered with a sort of sheepish honesty, and she glanced up again, brow arched. "Took you long enough," she said, and the smile that followed was easy and warmer than she usually allowed herself.

"Vess," she stated simply, her voice soft but clear. A beat passed, and then a small smirk formed across her lips. "And no promises about your toes. I can dance, but let's just say it's not something I keep in regular rotation."

Zaiya could feel her skin betraying her, the edges of her mottled spots flaring in golden ripples that danced and shimmered with every brush of his lips. The sensation spread like little sparks through her chest, warm and tingly and impossible to ignore. Between his words and the way he was looking at her, she was equal parts giddy and completely flustered.

Her voice wobbled a little with laughter as she tried to answer.

"Well, yes, you are more handsome. You were already pretty when I met you… but then…" Her blush deepened until she had to glance around just to keep from completely melting under his gaze.

"Well, I just noticed you more. And I like looking at you."

Her breath hitched, the words spilling faster now.

"Well, all the time, really. I like watching how you move… and fight and…" Images flickered unhelpfully in her mind, making her cheeks burn hotter until she had to bite down on a nervous smile.

"So yes, you are handsome. It's just… I notice more now."

Her fingers squeezed his gently, her glow still pulsing brighter than she could control.

He'd clocked the vibe she was giving off immediately. Vess to Kain wasn't doing this to fit in, or because they'd been out of place in the corner. No, he had a feeling she'd taken his hand simply because she wanted to. He respected the hell out of that. Their personalities? Different, sure. But really, no one was quite him. Still, they were both stepping forwards, or in his case backward, just because they could.

Difference was, he didn't have an off switch. "Hesitation" wasn't in his dictionary; impulse drove almost everything he did. She felt like the opposite to him: someone in control, deliberate in action. And yet she still chose this. For him, that carried trust.

"I prefer my dance partners a little reckless. Keeps things interesting."

The corners of his own mouth lifted into a grin as she stepped into his hands. He watched her for the most part, though his eyes occasionally flicked to the dancers around them. Then, almost unconsciously, his head began to bob in time with the music as he caught the rhythm. A playful sigh escaped him "I know. I'm incorrigible."

When she offered her name and her own warning, he simply broke out into a full smile, his top lip curling to reveal his teeth as a chuckle slipped out. "Well then, we can just hope dancing follows speeder rules, once ya learn sorta thing."

With that he stepped backwards once more in time with the beat, his hand tugging at her back in a guiding manner. "So Vess. What do you think of this little group." His gaze found Valery Noble Valery Noble then returned to his dance partner. "Pipe dream? Reckless ambition for change? Or ya think we got a shot?"

A very amused smile took over Aris's features as he listened and watched Zaiya speak. The colors that shifted over her skin weren't the kind he was quite used to seeing yet, but he couldn't help but enjoy seeing them regardless. It was.. New. All of this was new, in a good fun way. He set her hand on his chest, still holding it in his own.

"I'm glad to hear it. I've noticed a lot more about you too." He had for a while now. They weren't kids anymore. Finally he pulled his eyes away from hers, looking up to the stars above. "I didn't think you'd get so flustered over it though. You've always been so open about these kinds of things, makes me all kinds of curious now what has you blushing."

She made a mental note to go meet this Valery Noble soon. She didn’t want to interrupt the woman’s evening though since this was supposed to be a social occasion.

She saw some emotion flicker on his face that she didn’t recognize.

“Everything okay?”

She wondered if maybe she’d overdone it on the questioning. Buster seemed happy though so that was at least something.

Vera leaned back on her hands as Jayna stepped closer, her grin easy and warm. "Hey, Jayna. I'm Vera," she said, giving the girl a quick wave toward the open patch of grass. "Grab a spot, we're just trading 'flavors' apparently."

Her eyes flicked around the circle as everyone took their turn. Pari's words drew a softer look. She wanted her to know she didn't have to prove herself. Building a lightsaber was an important milestone, but not something to ever feel shame about. Michael's ramble earned her a smirk, and Ace's little speech pulled her gaze back to him.

"Keeping us alive, huh?" Vera grinned wider, the spark in her eyes clear. "I can handle myself, thanks. And you'll probably need the rest of us if you want to stay alive too. Pretty sure that fancy lightsaber of yours won't stop an explosion."

She gave him a playful tilt of her head before glancing back to the stars. "Guess that's the good part about all of us being here though. We've got different tricks, and together they make for a strong team."

Valery's grin widened at his jab about the remote, her mind already filing it away for the moment she crossed the finish ahead of him. He was going to hear about that.

The rush of cool night air against her skin only drove her faster, the grass brushing her ankles as she pushed herself uphill. Then she heard his voice, teasing, and felt the heat rise in her cheeks as she realized what he meant. The straps of her dress had begun to slip down her shoulders, dangerously close to betraying her in her race. With a sharp tug she yanked them back into place, her face flushed red as she shot him a squint over her shoulder.

That single heartbeat of distraction cost her... as he surged ahead.

"H-hey!" she called out, laughter in her voice as she chased after him. She knew she couldn't win like this. Not in a gown, and certainly not on heels. So she let the fire in her competitive streak take over. With one swift motion, she flung her leg forward, her heel flying loose, arcing toward the back of his head. Whether it struck true or simply startled him, she was ready to kick free of the heels this way and surge past him barefoot, dress be damned.

Victory was still hers to claim.

The night air on Odessen was cool, but not biting, just enough to sharpen Arden Durane's senses as he lay back against the stone lip of the lookout. For once, his armor was left behind, traded for simple robes that carried the faint scent of travel and campfires. Above him the stars stretched endless, a map of light carved into the firmament, and he allowed himself to breathe without urgency.

He counted constellations the way he once had as a boy on Midvinter, tracing them with a gloved finger against the sky. Different stars, different skies, but the memory lingered all the same. His people had always believed the ancestors whispered through the heavens, and tonight… he wondered if that might be true. How many of those points of light marked the homes they had saved? How many marked the ones they had lost?

His hand rested loosely over the hilt of his saber at his side, not out of habit but out of grounding. He didn't feel the press of duty in that moment, only the quiet strength of the Force wrapping him in its current, the galaxy humming with life even here on the cliff's edge. He thought of the Lions under his command, the Jedi who looked to him for guidance, and the new allies gathered that were not far from him. So many threads tangled together, fragile, imperfect, but undeniable.

And so, Arden let the silence speak. The stars told their stories, and he listened.

Yeah, fine. He stopped himself, curious if it was all a ruse, or if he was overthinking things. I’ve been known to sometimes say the wrong thing, or too much. Another shrug, as Buster brought him a stick to toss. He did so, and the boy happily tore off to fetch it and bring it back.

Of course bringing it back, didn’t mean giving it back.

I thought this was one of those times when you looked at me sideways.

I guess not.

Katarine laughed, trying to keep the mood light. “I’d be too scared to look at you sideways. Don’t want to cross a Jedi Shadow after all.”

Buster was playing fetch, but he wasn’t so ready to let his stick go.

“He hasn’t mastered the art of drop it has he?”
She was laughing, watching Buster try to play tug of war with the stick.

“I’m glad I’ve made a friend here…. Two if I can count you and Buster?”

Oh, he knows how to. He was yanking the stick, but getting little more than a growl from Buster. He just doesn’t like it. A tap of his leg was a message to Buster to do so, which he did, then “huffed” if he was human, it’s like he would have said “FINE!”

All was good when he threw the stick again.

I’m not normally this open… so I guess yeah. You can consider us each one if we can consider you.

“Of course you can.”

At least the evening hadn’t been a total loss. She had met someone nice and also met the adorable Buster. Katarine wasn’t certain what her future held but she was hopeful that she could finally find a place to belong.

Buster it seemed did know the command to drop, he just didn’t like doing it, or at least for about a second until the stick was thrown again. She wished she could get over things that easily. Maybe the Force was trying to tell her something with the little puppy. Not to hold old heartbreaks and wounds, but to look for new opportunities to fetch a new life. That sounded pretty philosophical. A little too Jedi mastery. Soon shed be an old man in a robe if she kept thinking like that.

She glanced sideways at Connel, but wasn’t certain what to say. She was enjoying the company but it wasn’t easy finding topics to talk about. He did seem like someone she could genuinely befriend, if she could get through his gruff exterior, and if he could get through her defensive one.

“So… tell me more about my new friend then… what should I know about you Connel Vanagor?”

Well? Which do you want to know about? Your new friend, or Connel Vanagor? A smirk crawled across his face, it’s funny how at ease he was. Normally Connel closed himself off to others he had just met. It was unfortunately a Vanagor trait, but one he was working on. He could thank Buster for that, maybe that was payment for not.dropping.the.stick! I’m not normally much for conversation. I try to be, but my father’s sense of “duty” wore off on me, big time. A tap of his leg and Buster dropped the stick only to be happily chasing it again for the last time (he let out a sigh, meaning he was out of breath).

He shrugged.

If I’m not visiting my mother, I’m out on operations or playing with Buster. I don’t have a social life.

As long as you aren't like...Dark Side related, which I don't think you are, and I don't think you're connected to the Empire.

It was, it truth, physically impossible for Phobos to be a darksider. In all of her encounters with the darkness, the Ashspawn had found that it was the only thing capable of actually hurting her. That made her very clearly in the camp of the light.

"Valery Noble... Connel Vanagor..." Phobos parroted, her tone low. "I... maybe have heard names like that on the holo? I'm not sure..."

Valery Noble. That sounded familiar. Something relating to... the Core maybe? She had surely heard that name somewhere to remember it rather distinctly. Somebody important, no doubt.

"Where would I find them?"
