Discussion Thinking of Doing a Complete Character Reboot - Could Use Help

Some of you know that I have been struggling with my main character Katarine Ryiah for a long... LONG... time now. She started 18 years ago on a board that was not as fleshed out as this one. Honestly her early stories were muddled and only half realized. Right now she feels like a comic book that started issues two decades ago. The issues were sort of rushed and scattered but they had potential. Then suddenly the company stopped publishing for a while and now they are publishing again but suddenly a beloved character is 900+ years in the future and her story never came to fruition. So many plots were dropped, rushed, or just abandoned because boards died etc. Many would say just destroy the character and start a new one but it's sort of like a world without Superman or Spiderman. People love those characters and that's why comic books continuously reboot their materials when things get too crazy or complex. I'm not saying people love Kat... but I do.

So I am thinking of rebooting her and giving me the chance to finally writer her out the way I've always wanted to. I don't think it should be an issue because the only writers she's mainly interacted with are Valery Noble Valery Noble and Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor . I'd be willing to talk to each of you privately to make certain this does not mess anything up for you.

Is there anybody I'm forgetting? I don't want to mess up anybodies story so I am offering a chance for people to offer criticisms etc before I act on anything. Just in case I forgot something...

I've adored Kat for most of those eighteen years, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with a reboot. Lets you fall in love with the character all over again, and she's still the same as always, just from a different angle.

Very excited.

aww thank you! I'm not even sure who you wrote 18 years ago? But I appreciate it so so much!

Kitter Bitters Kitter Bitters , you say it yourself. I found that when you let go of old legacies and create something new that fits what's happening on the board, you can slip into RPGs more easily. Being 800 years old does not equal wisdom, and I'm sure the human brain can't handle more than even 100 years of memories. You write great, so you don't need to overcompensate by saying she is over 800 years old. I'm not saying to make a new character, but ask the Jedi you write with to help retcon and new history with a Katrina that belongs to the current era of SW chaos.

Thank you for the advice! I really appreciate it :)

I think your character is pretty cool and if you want to do more rp/explore her earlier years that's awesome! If I can help with that, let me know. Not too sure on how to help since you got a few ideas on what to explore but always down to write and have some fun!

After giving it a bit of thought I might TRY to hash out her history in flashbacks and lost episodes so I dont have to completely redo her.

A few people reached out to me and said it might mess with their stories and I dont want to do that :(

I'm always game with any of my characters if you want to have some interactions.
As for refreshing? Sometimes you have to look at the big picture and realise that "They are my character and if I need the refresh then I need it." What matters at the end of the day is that you have fun writing them, otherwise what is the point?

I would love to rp with you!

I’ll keep shouting this from the rooftops, do what YOU want with the character. Thats the only way things will be fun for you. If you want to reboot and have her be a Rodian, go for it. Whatever YOU think is fun, otherwise we will be back here when it gets boring again for you.

I think it’s crazy people are reaching out to tell you what to do with your character and saying no, don’t do this, to new fun ideas. But that’s just me. Those people can just work around whatever new idea you come up with, who cares.

Keep in mind, there are characters that have literally switched from being Non-Force Sensitive to Force Sensitive, and erasing their entire app and recreating from scratch multiple times on Chaos before. Lots of reasons can be found to justify the change too if it's important. Temporal schism. Parallel world. Magick. Cloning. Long lost twin. Doppelganger. Shapeshifter. Cosmetic surgery (someone else looking like you). HRD. Time jump making you now the child of your former character. And so much more. (And sometimes a player just does it and 'hand wavium' AKA 'because' is the reason.)

Important not to pull the rug out from under people, but unless your character is actively the center of a big story and massive changes would undermine it, it's equally important to play the character you want to play. And even in the big story situation eventually there'll be a moment when changes can happen with less or no further impact.

Not to mention glorious RP opportunities that can help... readjust a character's inclinations. Fancy a trip to the Nether? And if it's a long life that's the issue, Runi Kuryida can help compartmentalize memories to help keep the 'present' in focus.

^^ This.

Don't let others tell you what you can or can't do with your character, do what is going to be fun. If you want to completely reboot Kat and make her into an Ewok - you do you.

Let other's figure out their own characters. I have written with plenty of people in the past who suddenly decided to start their character from scratch and go in another direction, you know what I told them? "Okay, cool, I hope you have fun!"

The person my character knew as Joe, and developed a bond with, was now going to be called 'bob' in my own canon and was a friend/rival/adversary/etc. that vanished (or whatever other story I wanted to make up).

Do what is going to be satisfying for you. You're the one writing the character.
