In defense of Anime, there's a lot more out there than the stuff that tends to be 'popular.' Since I assume you like sci-fi and space opera, I would recommend checking out Legend of the Galactic Heroes (assuming you can tolerate subtitles).

Back on topic, people who watch dubbed anything (except Bollywood movies, since those are all dubbed because there's like 30 languages in India).
Websites that make it so when you highlight something it causes a little popup to appear. >.>

I hate anime because of the art style and the character writing and the style of the world. Ghost in the Shell is about the only thing I can tolerate, but practically every anime I just find myself particularly disgusted with.

That's understandable, a lot of it is crap. But it's an artistic medium, not a genre in-of-itself. It's the equivalent of saying 'I hate live-action movies' or something. All I'm saying is there's a lot out there that isn't nearly as cliche and aggravating to watch as the popular stuff, but it's rarely big-name.
