First off, well done for putting yourself out there!
The main thing is communicating with your opponent if you end up with one, or your fellow teamates. Use either Discord or the on-site personal messaging system if you want/need to, to open the door to any questions or concerns that might crop up on either side. People are usually pretty happy to talk this kind of stuff, and even happier to see others take the initiative to reach out
With regard to combat, it's pretty simple. Make an attempted attack on a player but don't right that the attack hits them, it's up to the player you're attacking to decide if they get hit. The same can be said for anyone attacking you, you decide if you get hit, defend yourself or evade. I'm always a message away if you need any advice during the thread
