Private The Witch in the Woods

The return of Mysa had seen the siblings filter back into Heavenheim one after the other, each with the desire to reconnect and reminisce over their shared loss. Not once had all of Coci's children been together since her disappearance. Thirdas was first to show up, as his farmstead sat atop a hill on the outskirts of the capital and could readily visit his father. Then came Nina, arriving from the Beorni Heartlands accompanied by none other by her faithful companion; her dear, sweet Arnor. The guardian elder had already come to visit her at the College of Enlightenment when she heard from father. Last to arrive was Théodred, descending from the North to see his beloved "Wriggles" again. After the happy reunion between siblings, Nina lingered at her sister's side and would volunteer to accompany Mysa on her journey to Averlorn, and where Nina goes, so too does Arnor.

The WOODLAND REALM of AVERLORN

The last stretch of the journey had been a slog, plodding through an ill-timed snowstorm. At its worst, Arnor had taken to carrying the pair of Snowflakes while trudging forward on all fours, untroubled by the cold. Felix scouted ahead, the great sabretooth dissuading any potential attacks from wild predators. Having trekked through the night in order to escape the blizzard, by the time the sisters stirred awake, all bundled up as they were, the white haze had been replaced with lush, temperate green. Nina was still rubbing the sleep from her eyes when Arnor's deep voice rumbled beneath her.

"Little ones awake," spoke her lifelong friend, and she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around his fluffy head as she so often would since their first travels together. The mighty bear came to a slow stop, allowing Nina and Mysa to disembark and get their bearings. Nina thanked their steadfast guardian with a kiss on the tip of his black nose, and giggled upon receiving a nuzzle of her hair in return.

"To think, these woods were once closed off to outsiders like us," she mused while pushing aside a low-hanging branch with her staff. "There would've been an impenetrable fog in our way, if not for your fathe—" She caught herself. "If not for Uncle Thy— ...If not for the Phoenix King." Theirs was a messy, complicated family tree indeed.
