Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Ord Mantell

The message had been sent. The Enigma was recruiting, seeking to take advantage of fractured Imperial remnants in an attempt to gain an effective position. While a core focus was meant to be put on the efficient use of resources to expand Imperial influence within the now rudderless region of space once occupied by the Dark Empire and Empire of the Lost, the implication had also been made clear that there were more than solely secular intentions behind the faction. The 'face' of the group, the seemingly unaging Vanessa Vantai, had much more to her than was made publicly known.

Through the holonet, interest had come from an unlikely source. Onrai had of course chosen to do her research - and she was surprised what was evidently coming to her door. She would be a good hostess, and hopefully, perhaps this mercenary would prove to be something beneficial to the Enigma.

"You are cut off, get out of here!"

"Just one more... I'm fine, I swear...hiccup....promise!" Kat slurred as she leaned on the bar and gave her best drunken cocked eyebrows that she could give. However the bartender was having none of it and glared at Kat.

Raising her hands defensively, "fine...fine... I will spend my creds elsewhere then. Your...ugh...your loss!" Kat laughed as she stumbled backwards out of the cantina, the third one that she had been kicked out of that night. Once outside in the fresh air, she pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed. Using the Force, she removed the worse of the drunkenness from her system. Keeping to a semi-tipsy state to just keep the darker thoughts from lingering in her mind.

"Oi! You were hitting on my girl! Who do you think you are?" A male voice called out loudly to Kat.

"Someone hotter and better for a night than you?" Kat state bluntly, it was petty and dumb but Kat couldn't help as the words slipped from her lips before she realised completely what she was saying. Then came the first punch. It was a predictable response but Kat knew how to handle the situation.

The fight ended moments later with the guy suffering two broken hands and a lame leg due to a fractured tibia. Some might have considered the violence from Kat excessive, but it got the guy to shut up and beg for mercy. That had made her smirk in the moment before she stumbled her way home. Bored of the night now and crashing hard in her bed before meeting some important figure in the morning of the the next day.

------ The Next Day -------

Arriving at the meeting location, Kat had a cup of caf in hand, nursing a minor hangover. Luckily the detoxifying had prevented it from being worse but it was definitely lingering and kicking the Echani's butt for getting excessive last night. She also had a couple bruises from a the fights she had gotten into. The last fight had been one sided but the earlier fights were not as much in her favour. Those were something that she wore with a sense a pride since it demonstrated what style of mercenary she would be.

One that would defy the odds.

Kat entered the building and looked around, seeing the person who had sent out the mission invitation. Kat walked over, in her combat suit, with her weapons strapped to her. Clearly ready to go into action from the jump. She took a couple of gulps of her caf as she walked over to the other person. "So, you were looking for a mercenary. How can I help?" Kat asked jumping straight into the matter, deciding to avoid wasting time and to just jump straight into the matter. Since the sooner she got the job done, the sooner she got paid.

That was how this mercenary business worked right?

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
"Well, well." Vanessa Vantai said, surprised to see who had come through to meet her in an attempt to fulfill the Enigma's newfound need for mercenaries. "You know, when I read that the mercenary who was responding to this would be skilled, I didn't expect it to be a former Jedi, let alone quite a violent one." She laughed for a moment. "Under different circumstances we would likely have been trying to kill each other on the battlefield. How ironic what fate loves to do to us." She observed the disheveled state of the Echani woman. "I heard you apparently were causing trouble last night. I'm not particularly a fan of that happening on my planet, but given the influx of Imperials who've been trickling in from the former Alliance territories, it's not really surprising to find disorder happening somewhere here."

She sighed. "Deal's pretty simple. The Dark Empire's had its back broken and central authority's collapsed rather catastrophically. I'm officially making a move to save whatever's left of the Empire that I can, store it, stockpile it, and be ready for when the next force rises up to deal with the Alliance's overbearing pangalactic presence. Simple enough, right?" She asked, looking at Kat and trying to feel the woman out - she wanted to understand what sort of desperate circumstances had led one of the Silver Jedi's finest to such bloody work.

Kat let out a sigh and shrugged her shoulders, "I only defend myself. If others can't handle fighting an Echani, that's on them." There was a bored tone to her voice, she was not here to drudge up the past, she had been a Jedi once but that was a past that she left behind. There was too much conflict there for her and right now, working as a mercenary and using her skills for credits. That was something she was willing to do. It also meant that she was kept busy and not lingering around and waiting to hear from someone busy with their own work as well.

She couldn't cope with being left alone in her thoughts, now with how her family were being and the screaming loneliness was becoming too bitter for her to swallow. Kat figured that just working randomly like this would help keep her mind distracted.

"Drunken fights are always going to be common. No one died so it shouldn't be an issue." Kat retorted, "and I'm sure if I was collecting some bounties, I could make some good money getting into fights around here." She pointed out since bounty hunters did not care too much about keeping the peace when there was a job to be done.

Hearing the deal, Kat listened and shrugged her shoulders, "sounds simple, but we both know it isn't. Rebuilding and maintaining empires are not easy, nor cheap. Also don't hear the part where you need a random mercenary." Kat stated bluntly, she was not looking to beat around the bush on this issue, the Echani needed to know what her part was going to be in this plan.

"I ain't looking to be tied down helping you build something, but you need me to kill someone, bring in a bounty, get something for ya. I can do that, as long as you can pay." Kat stated, she was just starting her mercenary work so there was a lot of opportunities and chances to just work freelance for a bit.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
"Ord Mantell operates according a specific set of rules." She said. "A deliberate decision - a maximized star system like this can go quite haywire if people aren't prepared to keep it in order." She sighed. "I'll keep you on retainer, if you'd rather not stay close, but here's what I need from you, my dear former Jedi." She activated a holographic image on a datapad taken from within her black robes, which revealed an unusual device.

"Somewhere in the Jedi Archives on Tython, there's a device that looks like this. I want it, given the resources to make something similar are incredibly precious and I would prefer to have a spare in the event the hypergate here on Ord Mantell ever dies. Can you do that for me?"
