OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
SETTING INFORMATION
  • Structure Name: The Sky Temple
  • Classification: Temple Complex/Private Residence
  • Location: Deodoro Mountains, Zaathru
  • Affiliation: Rhiannon Dinn | Pantheon of Zaathru
  • Accessibility: Located on the highest peak of the Deodoro Mountain range—the tallest on the entire planet, with an elevation of 8,848.86 meters (29,031 feet 8+1⁄2 inches)—reaching the Sky Temple from ground level is a grueling climb that can take weeks to accomplish. Thankfully, there are stone steps carved out of the mountain to make the hike a little easier, though they are very steep and often covered in ice or blocked by snow. Of course, the atmosphere above 26,000 feet is normally known as the "Death Zone" as the air is too thin to breathe, but something about the Sky Temple seems to cheat death. Ancient technology similar to that found in the Forge of Mount Pele creates a force field around the structure, maintaining safe oxygen levels and a comfortably warm climate.
As for accessing the Temple via starship, there are landing pads available.
  • Description: The Sky Temple is an ancient Zaathrian ruin turned house of worship. Impressive in scope and scale, the structure's original purpose is unknown, but it has since become the seat of the Sky Goddess Adamanthea. Pilgrims partake in the arduous journey to the top of the mountain in order to sacrifice to the goddess and receive her blessing.
POINTS OF INTEREST

  • Hostel - Lodgings are available for visiting pilgrims to rest along the path up the mountain. These provide food and other provisions as well as shelter, although they are frequently overcrowded.
  • Throne Room - The throne of the Sky Goddess is magnificent, having been wrought from precious metals in the shape of a rising (or setting) sun. People gather here seeking an audience with the goddess.
  • Sacrifical Altar - A room reserved for the performing of sacrifices. It is filled with verdant plants, pools of clear water, and bowls of burning incense. Depending on whether a sacrifice has recently been made, there may also be a lot of blood, though the chamber is cleaned daily.
  • Private Quarters - Rhiannon and members of her family sleep in lavish suites tended to by servants. There are also luxurious guest quarters available for special visitors, and a variety of rooms used for recreation and other purposes. These areas are off limits to the public.
  • Gardens - Located in a special "open air" section of the Temple, the gardens are filled with a variety of plants native to both Zaathru and other worlds. It has paved walkways and a circular area which is sometimes used as a meeting spot for the other deities of the Pantheon.

SECURITY
High
; by the standards of Zaathru, this is arguably one of the most secure locations on the planet. The structure itself is protected by an ancient shielding system, which guards against most forms of attack as well as environmental dangers, and the halls are patrolled by trained guards. That being said, the fact that it is open to the public does compromise its security somewhat - it is possible to gain entrance simply by posing as a pilgrim seeking a blessing.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The original purpose of the structure now known as the Sky Temple is unknown. It has stood for thousands of years, protected from the elements by its complex shields. There are remnants of ancient technology found within its numerous chambers, but most of it is inoperable. It has been proposed that the Temple was perhaps a weather management center, with the machinery being used to control the atmospheric conditions of the region.

But for as long as anyone living can remember, it has been used as a temple to the goddess Adamanthea, one of the two central deities of Shaalite religion. Adamanthea is the Goddess of the Sky, and so her temple is located on the highest peak of the tallest mountain range. Clergymen have long tended to the temple, using it to perform rituals and sacrifices to the goddess. Now that her supposed incarnation walks among them, she has made the Sky Temple her home.
