Beltran watched quietly as Er’in ran her hand along the hull of the ship. He couldn’t sense what she sensed, but there was definitely an air of eerie otherworldliness that permeated the hangar bay. The Lorrdian wasn’t prone to nervousness, but something about this place was beginning to put him on edge. If asked, he wouldn’t have been able to describe the feeling but it certainly made the prospect of leaving in the immediate future seem even more welcome.

Moving over to the panel on the side of the boarding hatch, Beltran holstered his pistol and sheathed his blade. He then, as he had done before, pulled out his datapad and connected it to door panel. It was true that slicing wasn’t exactly his best skill, but having had a chance before to see how the operating systems of this time period worked, he felt a little more confident this time. Once he was connected, the Lorrdian cycled through a few pre-programmed slicing programs that he’d had installed on his pad years earlier.

As he’d suspected, the first few didn’t do much. They’d really only been designed to crack basic code, like you would find on a cheap locking mechanism. Finally, he ran his best algorithm. As it began to work, he thought back to the man who’d coded it for back on Lorrd all those years before. Ralston Sage had worked with Beltran for years as part of the Crinaldi crime family. He’d provided the technical expertise that Beltran had often lacked, and was a fair hand with a blaster to boot. If he ever found himself in a position to return to his homeworld, Beltran mused, he would have to look Sage up and see about hiring him on. The Crinaldi’s were all dead, but a man like Sage could make Beltran a lot of money out here.

The Lorrdian’s musings were cut short when, suddenly, Beltran’s datapd beeped and flashed green: indicating that the program had succeeded in bypassing the security lockouts.

“It seems that we’re in,” He informed the Sith woman. “Keep alert, I’m going to open the hatch now. I don’t see any immediate evidence of additional security features, but you never know.”

When he was sure that Er’in had heard him and was ready, Beltran keyed in the command to lower the boarding ramp.

Almost immediately there was a loud hiss as nearly millennia old hydraulics began to work. Then, with a slight sound of screeching metal, the ramp began to lower. Beltran quickly disconnected his datapad and stuffed it back in the carrying pouch from where he’d gotten it. He then moved over to were Er’in stood, just in time to look up the ramp as it finished descending.

While he had been correct in the sense that there had been no further security features programmed into the locking mechanism, Beltran knew as soon as the ramp had lowered that they would not be acquiring this ship so easily. At the top of the ramp stood two figures. They had metal humanoid bodies and were partially covered in what looked like desert robes. Each carried what appeared to be a staff, which when the droids activated them moments later, sizzled with electricity.

“Well,” The mercenary murmured, drawing his pistol and unsheathing his blade once more. As he spoke, the two MagnaGuard droids began to descend the ramp toward them, twirling their electrostaffs with expert precision. “This should be interesting.”

@Er’in Tenel

"Oh. Hello boys."

Er'in commented, her tone on the perky side of psychotic. Behind her, the precious Sith artifact settled to the ground with a thud, her control slipping a little as she tried to do too many things at once - not a Master yet, or even a Knight.

She backed up slightly, giving herself and [member="Beltran Rarr"] room to work, watching the droids with careful intent. She herself owned modern versions of these very models, but eight hundred years or more was a long time for changes in adaptive software, and MagnaGuard droids were not to be lightly dismissed by trained Sith or Jedi, let alone an Acolyte with ambitions.

She considered her spell list for a long moment, then decided that blade work would be a better choice here. She sprung forward, taking the leftmost of the droids, turning it's guard so that it was forced to face her, preventing the two of them from ganging up on her immediately and giving Beltran an opening to make his move.

Her blade sang through the air with almost musical death, clashing with brilliant sparks against the edge of the Electrostave as she parried the initial high-low sweep attack from the droid. That at least was consistant across the years.

Beltran maintained his characteristic silence as the droid to the right descended on his position. The mercenary felt an intense sense of anticipation which he honed into a razor’s edge of concentration. While he was dimly aware of Er’in as she engaged her own adversary, he paid it little mind. Either the Sith woman would win, or she would lose. If she lost, then Beltran was certain that he would die in his place. Yet, even that prospect didn’t faze him. Death had been an integral part of his life for as long as he could remember and the Lorrdian always knew that one day it would come for him, as it had so many others.

That being said, he had no intention of letting it come for him this day.

As the droid neared the bottom of the boarding ramp, Beltran fired off five shots in rapid succession.
The first three, the MagnaGuard deflected expertly with its stave, sending the bolts off in random directions. The last two made purchase, embedding themselves into the droid’s torso, but to no avail. Beltran has suspected that the armor that surrounded its chassis was far too thick to be penetrated by his pistol, but it never hurt to be sure of such things.

Upon reaching the bottom of the ramp, the droid lashed out at the mercenary with its weapon, mirroring the same high-low assault that its partner had attempted on Er’in. Unlike her, Beltran had no weapon capable of parrying the blows. Instead, he simply ducked under the first strike and then hopped over the second. To the outside observer, it might have seemed as though Beltran was toying with the droid but that was not the case. This wasn’t a game, or perhaps it was but one in which the stakes were as high as high could get.

Everything Beltran Rarr had been, was and would be hinged on defeating this opponent.

He had barely an instant to breath as he came down from his hop before the droid pressed its attack, changing it’s over and under head sweeps for a series of sudden jabbing motions. The Lorrdian somehow managed to keep ahead of the attacks, leaning forward, then backward, then forward again before launching himself into a jump turned somersault and coming up on the droid’s right flank. Had he been fighting a flesh and blood creature, Beltran could have attributed his ability to stay ahead of his opponent to a simple reading of its body language.

But a droid had no body language. It didn’t telegraph its blows, and yet somehow the mercenary seemed to know where it would strike next.

It wasn’t a conscious effort, but something born of complete instinct.

Coming up from the somersault, Beltran switched his grip on his vibro-blade and stabbed toward the red circle located on the droid’s midsection. Though caught out of position, the droid reacted with inhuman speed as it spun itself around to take the blow on another part of its torso. Sparks flew as the blade deflected off the droid’s armored, metallic flesh and a split second later it lashed out with a kick that sent the mercenary flying backward.

As Beltran came down hard on the ground, he wasted no time rolling himself back to his feet. Blood flowed down the mercenary's face, from what he was sure was a broken nose. As his dark eyes met the cold, unfeeling sensors of the MagnaGuard, Beltran spit out a pair of teeth that had been dislodged by the strike. Pain filled his senses, and yet through it all the mercenary smiled. Had the droid been a living creature, it might have known fear at the sight. Yet even though it didn’t, Beltran knew in that instant that he would be the victor. For he had found the weakness he was looking for, and the droid’s days were truly numbered.

@Er’in Tenel

The Princess of Hapes was also fighting for her life - more aware of that razors edge of 'instinct' that both Sith and Jedi alike call the Force, caught in it's subtle flow as she let it guide her actions here, then pushed it there. Much like [member="Beltran Rarr"] she might be considered slightly out of her depth in conflict with a MagnaGuard, this was without a doubt the most dangerous fight she'd been in up until this moment, or at least, the one in which she was more aware of the danger.

She leapt into the air to clear the droids third sweep, her blade slicing down to glance off an armoured arm, ducking fluidly and shifting stance to an offensive posture as it brought the lower half of the stave across at chest height. She sprang like a cat, leaping in for a wounding strike that would have struck deep into the servos on the droids upper arm, rage and passion guiding her strike - until she felt Beltran touch the Force, however inexpertly, and her concentration slipped.

Her blow struck too low and deflected off downwards, leaving her guard open, the haft of the electrostave caught her in the gut hard enough to send her flying back into the Mirr, a sharp scream erupting as her spine dug into the dark side artifact. But she remembered her lessons from her 'sister' and rolled backwards over the ancient artifact, drawing on other lessons and turning pain into anger, anger into power.

"Die, machine." She snarled slamming one hand forward to lift the MagnaGuard up off its feet and sending it slamming back into support strut of the entrance ramp. What she should have done at this point is use one of the myriad of offensive spells she knew - or even resorted to Force Lightning, which while less effective against droids, would deal with it before it could get back up. But remember - Acolyte - she let her anger guide her heart and her blade and leapt, wanting to get the 'kill' by her own hand.

Even while doing this, a tiny part of her brain noted a check box: talk to this mercenary about his gifts. He at least deserved to know before he attracted the wrong attention.

Even as the droid pressed its attack, Beltran lost none of his certainty. To his mind, the droid was already defeated. It was just a matter of time before it realized it too, and all he had to do was live long enough to see that eventuality realized. While the pain of his injuries continued to flow through his senses, the Lorrdian seemed to have lost none of his quickness. Blow after blow rained down on his position and each time it landed, he found himself no longer occupying the space he had when it had begun.

As he moved about the hangar, a new problem began to present itself: a burning in his chest that only served to grow worse each time he dodged another of the droid’s attacks. It reminded him of a simple fact, one that all the foreknowledge in the galaxy couldn’t save him from, that he was human and the droid wasn’t. Even if he continued to slip each shot, eventually the droid would wear him down. He would grow tired and eventually falter, while the droid would continue to move a year from now as quickly as it did this very second.

He knew he needed to end this battle soon.

But how do to that?

While his rifle still had a couple of shots left on its charge, and the power and range would likely give him what he needed to bring the droid down, the hard-pressed mercenary knew that he would never have enough time to unsling it and bring it to firing position before he found himself cooked by one of the ends of the droid’s electro-stave. His blade might be able to cut through the red transparent covering that housed the droid’s processing unit, but to do that he would have to get close and risk taking another blow.

He had been lucky the last time, coming away with only a broken nose and a couple of broken teeth. Next time he could lose a lot more.

Backing off his opponent, Beltran moved backward and away from the ship. As he did so, he let loose another barrage of blaster fire. This time, he didn’t concentrate his fire on the droid’s center mass but instead he aimed alternately at each of the droid’s arms. It was a much tougher shot to make, especially given how quickly both parties were moving, but it would also be more difficult for the droid to deflect.

That, he hoped, would serve to slow the metallic warrior down long enough for Beltran to bring his burgeoning plan to fruition.

It was at this point, somewhere on his left, he heard Er’in scream. It was a short, cut-off thing that ended as quickly as it had begun. While it was not what one might expect from a death shout, Beltran knew from experience that many a life had ended with just such, and often far less, a call. Despite that, and the fact that he hadn’t time to even spare her situation a glance, the mercenary knew that his compatriot was still alive. This time it wasn’t any manner of mystical certainty that provided the Lorrdian this information.

It was the fact that he hadn’t yet been besieged by the second droid.

As he continued to fire, Beltran sheathed his vibro-blade and pulled from another pouch in his robes a sonic detonator. While he would have preferred using a thermal explosive for what the he was planning, the risk of damaging the nearby ship, or injuring the Sith woman with flying debris forced Beltran to make due. Plus, the thermal detonators he carried weren’t designed to stick to a surface while his sonic one’s were. Taking a brief break from firing, Beltran peeled away the adhesive strip on the one side of the device before arming it.

Though only free of his fire for a brief second, the droid wasted no time charging toward the Lorrdian.

As he faced down his metallic foe, Beltran exhaled slowly, forced all the breath from his lungs. With it, went any sense of self-doubt and when the droid was just about on him, Beltran threw the detonator. Without even waiting to see whether it hit the mark, the mercenary launching himself to the side.

A split second later, just as the sonic detonator landed atop the red covering on the droid’s torso and exploded, Beltran hit the ground.

Using the momentum of his impact, he rolled onto his back and brought up his blaster. As he lined up his shot, he saw that the kinetic force of the detonator had done exactly what he’d hoped it would: shattering the covering over its processor. Then with a single shot, Beltran sent a bolt of super-heated plasma directly into the droid’s torso, disintegrating its processing unit. The resulting secondary micro-explosion was enough to effective cut the droid in half, causing both its head, arms and torso to fall to the ground at the same time as its legs.

The next few seconds, Beltran simply lay there on the ground gasping for air that he hadn’t known he’d needed. His vision swam for several moments, the product of the exertion coupled with lack of oxygen, before it settled back into anything remotely steady. When he could, the mercenary forced himself to a sitting position looked to where Er’in stood fighting the other droid. It would be several more seconds before he would be able to stand and come to her aid.

@Er’in Tenel

Er'in's early offence had at least bought her some time, the droids had been built and installed when force users were rare, and their programming seemed slightly unable to deal with the unexpected attack.

But it was only a matter of time before the electro-staff penetrated her defences, and superb as her alchemical robes were at deflecting blaster fire and the like, they were a bit on the revealing side (the penalties of being vain) and conducted electricity just fine anyway. The blow caught her upper thigh and sent her spinning to one side, gasping from pain and trying to haul air into her lungs, which burned like lava.

A lot like her mood, really. This had all been going so, damn, well.

The lighning arced from her fingertips with a crack of shattering atoms, slamming into the machine and staggering it back long enough for her to get to her feet. Behind her, the sharp explosion of the sonic detonator followed by the burn of fire from it's explosion caught her attention, but she didn't have time to think about that. The droid was stunned, but she was stunned worse - it was resistant to EMP attacks, where as she was most certainly not. Each breath drew upon the dark side to sustain her body, her focus dropping to little more than her opponent, relying on her force sense for external warning of another opponent as she rallied and charged, this time sliding a blow with her impossibly sharp blade up and in - unlike a lightsaber it could hardly sever a droids arm - she wasn't strong enough, but it could cut the motive lines and leave it hanging lifeless at her opponents side.

Beltran sat on the floor of the hangar, taking deep breaths in an attempt to drive the dark spots away from his vision. Despite his effots, the burn in his chest only continued to increase. The kinetic energy released by the sonic detonator must have cracked one of the mercenary’s ribs, he figured, and in the fury of the moment he hadn’t even felt it.

Across the hangar, he could see Er’in engaged with her own opponent. It took some concentration to focus his vision enough that he could make out more than blurry figures however, which also led the mercenary to suspect that he’d acquired a concussion in addition to whatever damage he had in his abdomen.

In essence, things were not looking up for the Lorrdian.

That being said, Beltran had been in this situation before. His body was literally riddled with blaster marks and vibro-blade scars. He couldn’t remember a time in his life when he hadn’t been in some kind of pain. Pain had long ceased to be a deterrent to him.
With the steel born of a life of violence and anger, Beltran forced himself to his feet. His head swam, and for a moment he swayed a little before he was able to focus his vision again. Stepping forward, he made his way to the destroyed remains of the first MagnaGuard. When he got there, the mercenary reached down-an action that filled him with agony-and picked up the fallen droid’s elctrostave.

Activating the weapon, Beltran then proceeded to advance on Er’in’s position. His focus was pincer sharp as he grew closer to the fight. To anyone who might have glimpsed the Lorrdian at this moment, there would have been no mistaking his intention. He was going to destroy this droid, any anything else that prevented him from boarding that Yacht and leaving this dusty hell.

Beltran approached the droid while it was still engaged with the Sith woman. He watched the combat unfold before him, as the two opponents moved back and forth. The droid, like all droids, was harder to read than a flesh and blood entity. They didn’t tense up when they moved to attack, neither did they flinch when they were attacked in turn.

The Sith woman was easier, though she moved like water-as if this all was some sort of dance. It was a wonder to behold, truly. But the
Lorrdian mercenary had beheld enough. He was tired of this battle, and of this world.

Moving into a flanking position, Beltran waited until Er’in’s blade had severed the servos in the droid’s arm. Then, as the droid moved backward to regroup, he lashed out with his own electro-stave. He drove the end into the droid’s torso, where he knew from his previous fight, that the droid’s main processor lived. Though it was likely armored from passive, and even some active, electric bombardment, he doubted that the droid’s creators would have put enough shielding in to stop the charge he was about to send through it.

A moment later, Beltran was gratified to find that he had been proven right.

Arcs of brutal electricity moved through his enemy’s metal body and soon the droid was writhing as if it was in pain. Then, came the acrid smell of melting circuitry before finally, a micro-explosion sent pieces of scrap flying around the chamber.
With that dealt with, Beltran dropped the stave-having no further use of it and turned to the woman. “I’m going to see if the ship can blast us out of here,” He told her. “You’re welcome to come with. I can drop you at your ship on the way out.”

He then turned and headed up into the yacht. It was old, but it was obvious that the ship had been made with luxury and precision in mind. Sitting down in the cockpit, Beltran found that despite having been sitting here all this time, the main reactor had enough emergency power in it to power up.

As the pre-flight programming began to cycle through, he checked on the ship’s weapons systems. They were meager at best, only a duel laser cannon in the front arc, and a laser turret on the top side of the ship. Where the ship really excelled was in speed and maneuverability. He wasn’t sure, since he was unfamiliar with this era of spacecraft, but if the engine specs were to be believed he could tow an Imperial Star Destroy in this thing! In addition, the ship had a shield rating for something of this tonnage and actually sported a small point-defense system. It wouldn’t do anything to opposing spacecraft, but they could knock out mines or incoming missiles easily enough.

Once the ship had powered up, Beltran targeted the obstructed hangar bay door opening and fired the lasers. It took a couple of rounds of shooting, but eventually he was able to clear a path big enough for the ship to escape. Putting the ship in hover, he began to move it gingerly through the opening.

Once outside, he turned the ship and found where the other ships had been parked. If the Sith woman had jumped on, he would drop her off there before heading back toward Niima outpost.

If she hadn’t, Beltran was confident that she would be able to make her way safely to her ship from where she was. In either case, he was happy to have made it out of the outpost alive, with a ship, a bag full of credits and a device that he was sure would come in handy later.

(OOC Note: I tried to get in contact with @Er’in Tenel via PM and was unable to get a response. As such, I deemed it appropriate after all this time of inactivity to post Beltran’s leaving of this thread.)
