GENERAL INFORMATION:
Name: The Serracan (seh-RAH-kan).
Designation: Sub-Sentience; The Serracan are not conventionally sentient as individuals, but the colony as a whole displays adaptive intelligence, problem-solving, and learned behaviour; effectively forming a distributed mind rather than a single ego.
Origins: Prior to the Sith's intervention and manipulative alchemical practices, the Serracan were believed to have existed as natural inhabitants of Rhelg, one of the ancient and sacred worlds deeply woven into millennia of Sith history. In those distant ages, the species formed part of the planet's broader insectoid ecology, occupying a niche within its harsh but balanced biosphere. They bore little resemblance to the formidable, predatory forms encountered in later eras, their evolution profoundly altered by Sith ideology and experimental sciences, which reshaped them into far more monstrous, adaptive beings known today.
Average Lifespan: 200 - 500 GSY.
Estimated Population: Inter-Planetary. The estimated population is complicated by the infectious nature of the Serracan population growth. A single Serracan released into an unsuspecting world can lead to a full-blown planetary invasion within months without intervention; further explanation provided in the description below.

- Spore/Cyst Stage:
The Spore, unlike the Serracan's more advanced stages, is a stationary being birthed by the Matriarch of the Hive or Nest. Within the spore, the Planula Larva begins to take shape, its future traits often determined by the environment it inhabits, and eventually produces different varieties of Serracan, such as the "Serracan-Temperis", which adapt to a planet with an atmosphere similar to Naboo's, gravity, and climate.
Other varieties include Serracan-Abyssal (Ocean World/Environment), Serracan-Nocturnis (Dark environments such as underground cave systems), and so on. These are listed in the races section of the Serracan submission.
- Planula Larva:
The Planula Larva is carnivorous, yet is less likely to seek out hostile contact with sentient lifeforms, lest they be docile or caught unaware; instead, the optimal source of sustenance can be found in animals, ranging from feline to cattle-sized targets. Rather than eating its prey in one sitting, the Planula Larva seeks to kill its prey before boring its body inside the carcass, so that it might reserve its strength for its inevitable transformation into a Juvenile Serracan.
- Serracan Broodling (juvenile)
Unlike the Planula Larva stage, the Juvenile eagerly seeks out prey to hunt, whether resulting in outright death or incapacitation, so that it might bring its victims back to the nest for the nourishment of the younger Serracan. The broodling has since adopted the moniker of being the forager among the metamorphic lifeforms, yet its aggression and tenacity are not to be underestimated.
- Serracan Warrior (Adult/heavy combat caste)
In the absence of an established Queen, the Serracan Adults will challenge each other, killing until only the strongest remains, and then, in the silence of their victory, will undergo a hibernation period during which a final metamorphic evolution will see them transition into a matriarch themselves. However, this is rare, and there can only be one Matriarch per nest.
- Matriarch/Queen:
The Serracan Matriarch, whose biology is uniquely adapted to endure extended periods beyond the confines of an established hive. Possessing a vastly more complex internal lattice analogue and greater metabolic reserves, the Matriarch can survive in isolation while gradually secreting foundational bio-structures that seed and expand new lattice networks. Through this process, she can establish nascent hive systems in previously unclaimed territory, effectively allowing the Serracan superorganism to propagate across planetary environments or even between worlds when conditions permit.
In the case of a Matriarch being eliminated, the Hive becomes frenzied, uncoordinated and aimless in their incessant violence. In the absence of time for a new Queen to rise from the blood of the weaker warriors, the elimination of a Queen may be the best hope of eradicating a hive infestation. Alternatively, when the brood of one hive is introduced to a secondary hive, the two matriarchs will enact the war of Serracan casts, fighting until one of the Nests has been overrun and killed by the stronger of the species.
Breathes: Adaptive Multi-Phase Respiration: Atmospheres I, II & III.
- Tracheo-lung exchange: Breaths oxygen or nitrogen-oxygen mixes through expandable lung sacs.
- Chemical gas-scrubber sacs: Internal membranes pull trace oxygen from air, even in extremely thin or toxic environments. Similar to some deep-sea worms.

Strengths:
- Extreme Environmental Adaptability: One of the greatest strengths is the Serracan ability to adapt to a large variety of planetary types due to their modular biology. The ability to adjust their respiratory organs to different atmospheres, to thrive under intense pressures and gravitational conditions, and even to suspend their metabolic rate in a vacuum or in space itself, makes this species an extreme threat wherever it may be encountered.
- Rapid Reproductive Expansion: All that is required for the expansion of the Serracan species is for a single metamorph to survive long enough to mature into a Queen for the greater benefit of the coming Hive. Their extreme deadliness as an organism is matched only by the threat they pose to their environment. The maturity of a Matriarch brings the birth of spores and the greater probability of their prey being overrun.
- Natural Bioceramic Armour: The Serracan exoskeleton is a layered biological armour composed of chitin, keratin, and biomineralized material. Though they do have physiological weaknesses, the species' evolution has created a born killer capable of withstanding considerable damage.
- Hive-Mind: Rather than acting as individual beings, the Serracan operate via a lattice network commanded by the will of their Matriarch and therefore are capable of overwhelming tactics in greater numbers. Ambushing their prey, striking from concealment, stalking in reconnaissance, and otherwise cooperatively adapting to the battlefield as a united front.
- Force-Dead: Because the Serracan are Force-Dead organisms, they do not register within the living Force the way most lifeforms do. In practical terms, this makes Serracans exceptionally dangerous ambush predators against Force users, who are accustomed to relying on intuition and foresight in combat.
- Dependence on the Lattice Network: The Serracan colony relies heavily on its lattice communication network to coordinate behaviour. If the lattice tendrils or root structures are destroyed, Serracans become disorganised, hunting coordination collapses and individuals revert to more instinctive behaviour.
- Joint Vulnerability: While Serracan armour is extremely strong, its joint areas must remain flexible. Vulnerable regions include the neck segments, underarm joints, the hind legs, and the lower jaw hinge. This is comparable to the weak links in armour compositions, making these areas of the Serracan body primary targets to engage.
- Sensory Overload: The Serracan rely heavily on vibration and chemical sensing, and therefore certain stimuli can disrupt them, such as intense sonic frequencies, heavy seismic vibrations, and overwhelming chemical odours. These signals can confuse their ability to track prey, causing no physical damage but potentially disrupting their efforts.
- Thermal Sensitivity: Despite the natural resistance of their chitin-plated exoskeletons, extreme temperatures can severely impair their mobility, degrade their collagen shock layer, and destroy their biological resin structures (the nest).
- Zero Force-Driven Adaptation/Awareness: The Serracan cannot instinctively react to Force disturbances such as large-scale battles, dark side nexuses, or powerful Force techniques, and they gain no precognitive advantage, unlike many Force-sensitive species.
- Environmental/Self-Conditioning Force-Use: While unaffected by the Force themselves, the presence of the Serracan does not negate the presence of the Force itself. Force-Users who come into contact with the Serracan can still engage with abilities such as physical or environmental conditioning, Force Speed, Tutaminis, Force Shield, etc.
- Hive Dependancy: The hive is not merely a byproduct of Serracan activity, but an essential extension of their biology. The lattice network through which they communicate also serves as a vital life-support system, sustaining their cellular stability and metabolic balance. When one or more sub-serviant Serracan forms become isolated from this network for prolonged periods, their physiological integrity rapidly deteriorates, resulting in accelerated tissue decay and, ultimately, death.

- General behaviour: The Serracan behave less like individual animals and more like a living ecosystem of predators connected by a shared intelligence. Their behaviour reflects a mix of insect colony coordination, apex predator instincts, and adaptive survival strategies.
- Colony Intelligence: A single Serracan is dangerous, but a group acts as a hive-mind, coordinating through their lattice network and able to surround or ambush their enemy, as well as learning from every experience.
- Adaptive Hunting: The Serracan do not simply rush to the kill; they take time to observe and learn from their victims before acting. This is sometimes seen as toying or playing with their victims, but it is a clear sign of greater intelligence than appearance alone may initially suggest.
- Environmental Integration: Rather than building nests like insects, Serracans merge their hive with the environment by secreting resins, which they use to develop their nightmarish lairs: dark, thickly tendriled coverings that envelop every surface and create a humid atmosphere within, perfect for the growth of the spores so preciously guarded.
- Territorial Silence: Unlike many predators, Serracans are usually silent hunters. They communicate through vibrations, pheromones and some form of low-frequency bioelectric pulses.
- Rapid Tactical Aggression: When a colony decides to attack, it happens all at once. Scouts observe their prey; the Colony encircles the target; lighting and sound sources are destroyed first; and finally, the attack is launched from multiple directions simultaneously.
While their precise beginnings remain the subject of guarded speculation among those permitted to study such matters, most credible accounts trace the earliest confirmed encounters with the Serracan to the Sith holy world of Rhelg. Long before they were known as a galactic threat, the Serracan are believed to have existed in a far more primitive form as part of Rhelg's native insectoid ecology, inhabiting cavern networks and subterranean ecosystems that had endured for millennia within the planet's harsh and sacred landscape. It was only during the excavation of catacombs long stricken from public sight that explorers uncovered evidence of these ancient lifeforms, and of the profound transformation they had undergone. Fragmentary holocrons and restricted archive entries suggest that during the era of the legendary Sith Lords Naga Sadow and Ludo Kressh, the species was subjected to deliberate manipulation through Sith alchemy, reshaping it from relatively natural subterranean predators into the far more aggressive and adaptive Sithspawn horrors later encountered.
Their violent emergence during the waning years of the Galactic Republic and the turmoil surrounding the First Great Hyperspace War proved catastrophic, as newly altered Serracan swarms overwhelmed labourers and acolytes serving under Kressh's authority. However, initial attempts at eradication gave way to darker ambition when the Sith Lord recognised the creatures' potential as instruments of war. Rather than annihilate them entirely, Kressh is believed to have ordered several specimens taken alive for study and containment, seeking to harness their evolving savagery as a strategic advantage in his rivalry with Naga Sadow and in the broader conflicts that threatened to reshape the balance of power across the Republic.
The Serracan appear to follow no obvious political borders, allegiances, or patterns of expansion. Colonies have been discovered on worlds separated by vast distances, sometimes dormant for decades before activity suddenly resumes. In many cases, the creatures leave little trace of their presence beyond altered environments and abandoned settlements, making it difficult to determine how widespread they truly are. Force-sensitives unfortunate enough to encounter the Serracan soon discover a deeply unsettling truth: these creatures leave no discernible imprint within the Force, nor do they appear readily susceptible to the subtle influence of Jedi or Sith abilities.
Because confirmed encounters are so infrequent and often end with few survivors, the Serracan remain something of a biological mystery. Most governments classify them as a Classified Xenobiological Threat, though official documentation about the species is sparse and often contradictory. To the wider galaxy, they are little more than a rumour shared among explorers and frontier settlers: stories of silent hives hidden beneath the surface of forgotten worlds, waiting patiently in darkness.
