SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Can add sandwich spread to a piece of bread from up to ten feet away
  • Looks and behaves just like a real rifle, until you pull the trigger.
  • Laser etching system can not only toast bread, but can add custom emblems to the surface.
Strengths:
  • Long Range Sandwich- Why exactly anyone would want to make a sandwich from across the room, Rusty has no idea. He just made the thing and dutifully filled out "Psyops" on the paperwork. Has a standoff distance of about three feet, meaning that the muzzle must be at least three feet away from the bread when the trigger is pulled. After ten feet, the spreading device loses too much momentum to be effective.
  • Looks Like the Real Thing- Mechanically, it functions much like an actual assault rifle, and aside from the wide-bore barrel, it looks just like one as well. This is apparently for the purpose of interrogation. Exactly how that's useful? Your guess is as good as Rusty's.
  • Laser Toasting System- An attachment that resembles a cross between a lightsaber and a bayonet may be fitted to the weapon's bayonet lug. In it is an industrial laser calibrated to perfectly toast bread. It can be uploaded with custom emblems from any compatible CAD program.
Weaknesses:
  • Not Actually a Weapon- If you try to shoot someone with this thing, you're just going to make them tasty. Considering the customer, Rusty wasn't prepared to rule that out as a potential use, but he figures she's probably just going to try to intimidate people she can't legally point guns at.
DESCRIPTION
Have you ever looked at a customer and wondered exactly what they were smoking, and whether or not they would share? That's about how Rusty felt when this order came in.

In looks and functionality, it resembles a standard assault rifle. There are a few key differences. For starters, the chamber, barrel, and receiver are internally lined with culinary grade stainless steel. Secondly, the bore is much wider than it would be on a standard rifle. At .90 caliber, it looks more like a cannon than anything if you're looking down the wrong end. Very scary stuff. To keep the barrel light enough to be useful while still making it thick enough to look realistic, it's made of lightweight alusteel. Trying to fire an actual lethal projectile of that bore would result in the sort of catastrophic failure that ends up in medical textbooks.

The secret to making a perfect sandwich at range lies in the projectile. Each projectile is hand loaded with the sandwich spread of choice. It can accept most non-crunchy nut butters, from peanut to almond to hazelnut, as well as jellies and preserves, so long as they're seedless and contain no chunks of fruit. The inside of the chamber is lined with a culinary grade nonstick coating, but chunks will foul up the ejection mechanism.

The loaded cartridges resemble a standard slugthrower cartridge from the outside. Rather than gunpowder, they contain a measure of compressed gas. When the firing pin is struck, the gas propels the projectile down the barrel, much like a normal bullet, but without the fouling residues.

A very simple rangefinder built into the rifle measures the distance to the target bread when the trigger is pulled, and programs the arming distance into the projectile. Once it reaches the preprogrammed distance, a secondary charge of gas ejects the spread into a circular splotch about 9 cm across, or just wide enough to cover a piece of standard sliced bread. The gas also splits the cartridge in two, and sends the halves flying harmlessly on either side of the bread. After about ten feet, the heavy, slow projectile doesn't have enough momentum to function properly, and disarms itself to prevent accidental discharge. It may then be refilled with gas and, after a good rinse, loaded back into the magazine.

To toast the bread, a specially tuned industrial laser was included. It's a relatively simple affair, just a solid state etching laser that can be programmed to either toast the whole surface of the bread, or etch emblems into it. It looks something like a lightsaber, but its girth is simply a result of fitting in the appropriate hardware.
