STANDARD FEATURES

While obviously based off an outdated, borderline ancient design, the Roughneck’s systems, sensors and security countermeasures have all been updated accordingly to bring it in line with the present standard for vessels of the same class.

ADVANCED SYSTEMS

Baffler
Cap Drain Module
Chrysalis Life Support System
Countermeasures Module
Decoy System
Defencive Decoy Module
Encrypted Holotransciever
Force Cage
Multi-Transponder Code
Mynock Hypernav System
Isotope-5 Reactor
Retractable Armament Foils
Scrambler
Sensor Jammer
SLAM Drive
Smuggling Compartments
Thrust Trace Dampner
Tractor Shroud

STRENGTHS

Built for Scrapping: Roughneck has a myriad of weapon systems, being fully loaded with heavy laser cannons, solar ionisation cannons and a nose-mounted Hushaby rotary cannon turret.

SLAM Drive: When engaged, the SLAM drive increases the vessels speed immensely (Extreme).

Stealth: The Roughneck is equipped with a baffler, scrambler, thrust trace dampners and a coating of Nightshadow to obscure its presence when the situation warrants it.

WEAKNESSES

High Maintenance: Due to the wide variety of systems, subsystems and features installed throughout the ship, many of which from various different and often conflicting sources, the Roughneck requires a great deal of regular and constant maintenance to keep everything in working order.

SLAM Drive: As powerful as the SLAM Drive might appear, the strain it places upon the ship dramatically reduces its maneuverability (Low) and runs the risk of overloading the engines when used for extended periods of time. As such, it should be considered more as a hidden card than a primary feature, being only revealed in times of great need.

Stealth: The stealth features of the Roughneck could be considered situational at best, requiring the vessel to keep a relatively low profile and low speed while operating if it wishes to remain obscured. Speed can be increased for short jaunts, but those thrust trace dampners quickly become overloaded at anything above cruising velocities.

DESCRIPTION

Originally marketed sometime during the waxing years of the Old Republic, the D12-Mantis was seen by many as Kuat Drive Yard’s blatant attempt to recapture the former acclaim it had received for it’s D5 predecessor. Unfortunately, while its upgrades and new design features were met with positive reception from critics, the vessel itself failed to make an impact on the public at large. After a series of several disappointing years of failing to meet sales projections, the line was ultimately mothballed, becoming nothing more than a passing footnote in the annals of the company’s otherwise illustrious history.

That is, until it was recently resurrected by Stellarwind R&L. Liberally ‘borrowing’ the designs from the KDY archive, SR&L set about modernising the D12 for the current era, retrofitting and, in some instances, completely redesigning the vessel from the ground up. The Roughneck was the only prototype produced during this phase, although officially it was decommissioned following the initial flight tests. Unofficially… Well, you hire scoundrels and outlaw techs, you’ve got to expect that a few things will go missing sooner or later.

Spec wise, the heart and soul of the vessel is the powerful Isotope-5 reactor. This little beauty was an experimental number originally marked for a much larger vessel, so is a little out of place in a patrol vessel, easily meeting and exceeding the power requirements. This has an unfortunate knock on effect of raising the maintenance demands, which was part of why the line wasn’t pursued much further, making Roughneck quite literally a labour of love for any prospective owner.

That same power output allows it to host a wide number of additional features, however. A powerful, one of a kind SLAM drive was installed to give the vessel a little extra oomph when in a pinch for example, allowing it to temporarily redline the engines far above and beyond the normal safety limits. Ideal for sudden quick getaways, but dangerous to run for any longer than a few minutes.

A variety of armaments also take advantage of the increased power available, with the Roughneck clearly being built to pack a solid punch for its class, although clearly favouring versatility over raw force. Judging from the stealth packages also included in the vessel’s loadout, it seems to be largely orientated to sucker punches and ambush tactics. Hit the enemy fast, run away even faster.
