Faction The Room Where It Happens | GA Senate

Senator of Cortella
"Had I suspicions that this circus was, in fact, inevitable, I would have taken the same actions. Momentary discomfort -- for myself or for Natasi Fortan -- is insignificant compared to the interests of the people we seek to represent her."

"Of course, none of us would deliberately seek to make anyone uncomfortable," he lied without any shame at all.

"But you had no suspicion at all that bringing Natasi Fortan here would distract from your diplomatic mission?" he asked ever-so-sweetly.

Renata raised an eyebrow, having the good grace to look mildly perplexed. "Certainly not, Senator. The Supreme Leader had multiple constructive interactions with the former Chancellor before and after the Csilla crisis. To my understanding those meetings were perfectly cordial and, though the diplomatic efforts resulted in nothing, it was not because the First Order and the Galactic Alliance were working at cross-purposes. If I am not much mistaken the Supreme Leader and the Supreme Chancellor were sympatico -- on the same side of things."

She paused a moment and laced her fingers together on the desk. "Perhaps there's something I'm missing as to what has changed between now and then. Other than the fact that those meetings were not being broadcast, but -- surely that would have nothing to do with this."

Of course it had everything to do with his questions. He couldn't have avoided basic political points scoring even if he had wanted to.

Raigryn Vayd did not want to. He enjoyed the games.

"So you did not consider it?" he asked rhetorically.

"Well then, no one questions from myself. I hope that the visit can go ahead, perhaps there will be a significant boost to the economy of Aegis. Perhaps a new trade agreement, or maybe a few of my colleagues will move their holiday homes there."

Raigryn sat back with an air of finality. The final comment had been a double edged sword. A slight on the relatively insignificant system's economy, as well as a reference to some of his political opponents having the scale of their second homes appear in a recent media scandal.

Fortunately they hadn't found his second home yet.

Nor his third home.

The press were lazy. There were even three illegitimate children they had yet to track down.

Admittedly Natasi is a talented politician. Given her extensive history that shouldn’t be surprising the more he thought of it. Rens stayed quiet as the former Grand Moff went on, claiming that her application wasn’t offensive to First Order sympathizers. Needless to say he wasn’t comforted by that. Said elements may even be pleased with her becoming part of the senate.

It’s only speculation. Whatever the truth she is politically crafty and charismatic. A potential poison to our Alliance if she still holds authoritarian ideals.

Keeping those thoughts to himself Rens refused to take part in the verbal duel between the so-called Republic’s Prime Minster and Varyd. No his attention remained on Fortan.

“You speak of benefits that the Alliance would gain with your world’s membership Ms. Fortan. Yet what does the Renascent Republic want in return from our Federation?”

She answered his question well; it was perhaps a bit too long to be repeated in full by most news networks, but there were useful snippets and it was certainly far more digestible to the common man than the complex documentation exchanged between the Alliance bureaucracy and the government of the Renascent Republic.

"A reasonable and well-considered system, Prime Minister." Perhaps he was laying it on a bit too thickly.

No matter, it was not as if the system itself was terribly controversial, possibly with the exception of its Supreme Leader. Hell, it was a fair bit more democratic than the planet he represented - he had been selected by elected representatives, for example, but they had only been able to choose between three candidates presented by the Board.

Things took a turn after that. First, the Chancellor declared that the proposed visit would occur promptly, not in the unspecified future. After that, the political environment slowly but steadily turned more frigid.

To further complicate matters, Cadence seemed to be agitated by the appearance of a man bearing a lightsaber.

<It's an unacceptable risk. // Security is especially tight thanks to the Chancellor, you know. // Her people would prioritise her security in a crisis. // Indeed, but I cannot exactly bring a Praetorian. // Correct, but I have something capable yet discreet in the works - for now I'm assigning you an armed escort for the trip. // Alright. You know best.>

Distracted as he was by the internal conversation, he did not see any openings to regain control of the narrative.

Natasi fixed Senator Ahim with her diplomatic look, eyebrows furrowing in concentration.

"I hope my previous comments did not give the impression that the Renascent Republic is, in this moment, able to contribute in a significant way to the Galactic Alliance. As the Galaxy's only remaining superpower, it would be foolish for me -- arrogant, even -- to suggest that our colony, however prosperous, is in a position to make a sea change in the Alliance's economic, military, or diplomatic efforts. As Senator Vayd so helpfully pointed out, from an economic standpoint -- for the time being anyway -- it is the Renascent Republic that stands to gain from our membership in the Alliance more than the Alliance itself would."

Natasi offered a shallow bob of her brunette coif toward Raigryn Vayd Raigryn Vayd , eyes flickering to his briefly before turning back to Rens Ahim Rens Ahim . "The Renascent Republic is blessed with a number of natural resources that we are keen to be thoughtful stewards of, and which we are fully willing to offer in trade, regardless of our membership. More than that, some of the best and brightest from the second iteration of the First Order -- scientists, engineers, urban planners, agricultural specialists, et cetera -- would be at the disposal of the Alliance. And, of course -- complete transparency. The Alliance will not need to wonder what a former First Order colony is getting up to on its border. It would need only to ask."

She paused, shifting in her seat, pressing her knees and legs together in a duchess slant beneath the table. "As for what the Renascent Republic gets out of the deal -- well, the protection of a powerful overarching government, for another. A broad market for the goods and services we have to offer, and a broad base of settlers that might be interested in exploring and settling Aegis, Eos, and Elea. And -- I hope you don't mind my frankness in saying that I am aware that this sounds quite saccharine. It may help you all to understand something about this about the people recruited for this colony is that there is a kind of hunger inherent in them, to serve something bigger than themselves. Right now, that's growing a colony, settling a system, building a nation together. But there are no limits to the service these people are eager to offer."
