DESCRIPTION
Founded with the aim of advancing sentient life within the galaxy, the Progredior Research Institute prides itself on pushing a wide range of scientific boundaries in order to further its agenda. With that in mind it has delved heavily into a variety of fields over the last eight decades, with research conducted in Genetic Engineering, Cybernetics, Nanotechnology and even Artificial Intelligence.
Due to the Institute’s somewhat flexible approach to the medical, ethical and legal constraints normally placed upon these fields, it has garnered a somewhat dubious reputation within the Galactic scene. Seeing it's fortunate fluctuate wildly due to sanctions, court cases and boycotts.
Each successive Director of the Institute remains resolute, however. Fully committed to the belief that the next stage in galactic evolution should be one brought about through painstaking research and design, rather than the all too fickle whims of fate.
Terminus: Current headquarters. The Progredior Research Institute operates numerous clinics, laboratories and think tanks across the planet, both legal and extralegal. Provides a full court press of services for discerning clients and compensated volunteers.
Anoat: While listed in the directory as a waste and reclamation installation, spearheading the Institute’s commitment to galactic environmental sustainability no less, Anoat actually serves as an unofficial warehouse and containment facility. Housing numerous projects (and occasionally patients) that, for a variety of reasons, have seen themselves temporarily shelved or otherwise abandoned entirely.
Bespin: The administrative hub and de facto tax haven. Maintains a corporate office on Cloud City as well as a discrete clinic on a nearby re-purposed gas platform.
Coruscant: The former headquarters of the Institute, PRI’s presence on Coruscant has been significantly reduced due to a string of unfortunate legal misunderstandings surrounding the exact nature of its work. Rather than spend valuable resources disputing these wholly egregious and outlandish claims, the Director officially closed the doors to the planet’s primary clinics, opting to relocate to comparatively lax legal climate of Terminus. Unofficially, there are rumors that several branch facilities continue to operate in the lower levels of Coruscant, providing its valuable services to the populace in a backroom, off the books manner.
Polis Massa: While primarily home to the Institute's nanotechnology research initiatives, Progredior also operates a cutting edge medical facility for select clients visiting the planetoid, specializing in cases that would otherwise prove difficult or even impossible for conventional medical intervention.
Shuxl: Maintains a small space bound laboratory within the otherwise barren system, taking advantage of the lack of technological infrastructure (or any infrastructure for that matter) to pioneer research into Artificial Intelligence without the risk of contamination.
Thyferra: Following the Sith Empire’s ravagement of the planet, the Progredior Research Institute invested heavily in the restoration local infrastructure, particularly those related to the production of bacta. It has since become the main hub for the Institute’s research and advancement into genetic engineering, biosculpting and medical services.
RATIONALE
The Progredior Research Institute was founded by Doctor Teil Da Charden during the waning years of 8th Century ABY. In the following eighty two years, it has seen fit to subsequently elect eleven directors to helm the continued furtherment of Da Charden’s dream. The current twelfth director is the latest installment in that fashion, having been nominated by the board of trustees on the basis of his work into symbionts. The fact that this work has since been denounced by the Coruscanti Medical Association, resulting in the relocation of PRI’s Headquarters, doesn’t seem to have been an issue. If anything, the controversy seems to have served as an unofficial seal of approval.
