Seasonal The Midnight Carnival from the Netherworld

Nobody saw the carnival arrive. One moment, there was nothing. An empty field, an abandoned military installation, a quiet settlement, or perhaps a stretch of land on the outskirts of a bustling city. An ordinary place that was unremarkable in every conceivable way.

And then, without warning, there it was. A sprawling collection of brightly colored tents, elaborate attractions, and winding pathways illuminated by thousands of tiny lights. A towering Ferris wheel turned slowly against the night sky, while the distant silhouettes of carousels and other rides moved to the rhythm of music that seemed to come from everywhere at once.

The air was filled with the scent of freshly baked pastries, candied fruit, and something faintly unfamiliar that no visitor could quite identify. Laughter drifted between the tents, mingling with the cheerful cries of barkers and the enchanting melodies of musicians whose instruments seemed to belong to another age.

It was beautiful. Impossible, perhaps, but undeniably beautiful.

And at the entrance stood a man dressed in an immaculate burgundy and black coat, it's intricate gold embroidery catching the light. His dark hair was perfectly arranged beneath a feathered top hat, and a welcoming smile rested upon his handsome features. He stood beside an ornate entrance arch, one gloved hand resting upon the handle of an elegant walking cane.

As the first visitors approached, he inclined his head in greeting. "Welcome, one and all! Come in, come in! There's no need to be shy. The evening is young, and we have something quite extraordinary in store for you." His smile widened as it reached his eyes. "Perhaps you'd care to test your luck? Consult our fortune-tellers? Discover what lies beyond the veil of your own reflection?" He gestured towards the carnival grounds, where the lights shimmered and the music swelled. "Or perhaps you simply wish to enjoy an evening away from the ordinary. Whatever brings you here, I can assure you that you are most welcome."

For a moment, his eyes lingered upon the gathering crowd, taking in each new arrival with an interest that was difficult to interpret. "Lucien Vale," he introduced himself with a slight bow. "The Ringmaster, at your service." He straightened, adjusting one of his gloves. "Now, before you venture too far, I should mention that the Carnival does have a few traditions. Nothing terribly complicated, I can assure you. We simply ask that our guests treat the attractions and their inhabitants with respect, and that any agreements made during their visit be honored." His expression remained warm. "After all, a bargain is only as good as the word of those who make it."

Somewhere behind him, a bell chimed. For the briefest instant, the music faltered. A young woman standing beside one of the ticket booths glanced at the polished glass of a nearby display case. She frowned, then leaned closer. Her reflection was missing. She blinked. The glass showed only the lights behind her. When she turned to call for an attendant, he was already watching her. Smiling.

Across the grounds, a fortune-teller drew the curtains of her tent closed. Inside the Hall of Mirrors, a figure that looked remarkably like one of the newly arrived visitors turned it's head in perfect synchrony with someone who had not yet moved. And somewhere beyond the cheerful music, behind a canvas curtain marked The House of Lost Souls, a familiar voice whispered the name of someone who had been dead for years.

The Carnival continued as though nothing had happened. The lights shone brighter. The music played on. And Lucien Vale stood at the entrance, welcoming his guests with the same impeccable courtesy as before. "Enjoy your evening, my friends." He tipped his hat. "You never know what you might discover."

And somewhere beyond the carnival grounds, something in the darkness begins to laugh.

Objective 1 - The Hall of Mirrors: Characters encounter alternate versions of themselves. Perhaps one is a version who made a different decision, became a different person, or committed an act they would never ordinarily consider.

Objective 2 - The House of Lost Souls: Characters encounter someone from their past. It could be a dead friend, a former lover, a parent, a former master, or even an enemy. Is the person real? Are they an illusion? Or simply something pretending to be them?

Objective 3 - The Fortune Teller: A mysterious figure offers to reveal one truth about a character's future. It could be your own, or someone elses.

Objective 4 - The Freak Show: Visitors discover that the performers are not necessarily willing participants. Some appear to be ordinary people. Others are things that should not exist.

Objective 5 - BYOO: Bring in your own story!

Words of Warning: Everyone who tries to leave before their bargain with the Carnival and Lucien Vale is complete discovers that the Carnival has no exit. Or that the exit leads somewhere entirely different from where they had entered.
