His thumb rubbed along her shoulder blade as the kiss deepened, when they parted he also rested his forehead on hers. His breathing deep and slow. A soft laugh escaped him after she spoke.

“You make it sound like we have a contract.”

He spoke with a hint of jest in his voice. The feeling of her hand on the side of his neck caused his head to tilt slightly in that direction, his eyes closed as he enjoyed the touch.

“I suppose the moment only ends if we allow it.”

His voice was but a whisper in her ear, a soft breath breezing over her neck.

“It is a memory I will treasure always. A moment that will never leave me.”

A smile came to his lips.

“Dinner is safe in the ice box. I’m sure it can wait a moment-”

Before he could finish his sentence, their lips met again. A deeper slower burn of touch and warmth that refused to part. The moment only drew him closer to her. His hand dropped to her lower back to support her as his other wrapped around beneath her arm and across her shoulderblades.

Not only a physical wrap around her to hold her close, but a way for him to hold on to her that much more as they shared this moment with each other.

Seren melted into the embrace with a grace that surprised even her, all the guarded distance she so often carried set quietly aside in favor of something far simpler and far more honest. One hand remained at the side of his neck, fingers threading lightly into the hair there, while the other rested over his heart as though she wished to feel every steady beat he offered her.

She returned the kiss with no trace of hesitation now, only warmth and certainty, meeting the deeper tenderness of it with one equally profound. The world beyond them seemed to recede into little more than distant waves and fading light, reduced to background while the space between them became everything.

When at last she drew back, it was only enough to breathe.

Her eyes opened slowly, glowing amber softened by affection as they searched his face from only inches away. A faint smile curved at her lips, one that belonged to no one else.

"Then let us be irresponsible for one more moment," she murmured, the dry warmth in her tone made gentler by how openly fond she sounded.

Her fingertips traced lightly along his jaw before settling once more at the side of his neck, lingering there with quiet familiarity.

"You speak of treasuring memories, but I think this moment has already become something I will never forget."

The confession came softly, carried on the same honesty that had overtaken them both.

She shifted closer still, fitting naturally within the shelter of his arms, her head resting briefly against his shoulder as if testing how easily she belonged there.

"And I find," she added in a quieter voice near his ear, "that I am in no hurry to let it end."

She lifted her gaze to him again, tenderness plain and unhidden now.

"Though if we continue much longer," she said, a playful glint returning to her eyes, "I may begin to suspect you are using romance to avoid cooking."

Then she kissed him once more, slower this time, affectionate and unhurried, before allowing her forehead to rest against his again as the sunset deepened around them.

A quiet hum left his throat as they pulled away for quick words. His hand now on her waist after she spoke of being irresponsible.

“Ah but my Lady Seren, that is what I do best.”

A quiet chuckle left him after she mentioned the memory staying with her. He could not have agreed more with that. If he could stay right here, he would.

Another slow gentle kiss met hers followed by a smile.

“Well, I suppose I better start dinner then hm?”

Without warning his arm dropped below, scooping her up into his arms cradling her to his chest. He used the force to carry the ice box to him. Then he walked to the spot he had seen before.

The firepit laid there, dark and waiting for them both before he gently set her down beside it.

He then stood up straight, looking at the branches then, one by one, started pulling some weaker ones down. Ones he knew would burn well and not contribute to the tree.

“We could use the cloak as something to sit on if you wish.”

Seren let out the faintest sound of surprise when he lifted her, more breath than voice, though the warmth that followed in her expression made clear she did not object in the slightest. One arm settled naturally around his shoulders while the other rested lightly against his chest, her glowing amber eyes studying him with quiet fondness as he carried her from the dock.

"You are alarmingly confident when you decide to be," she murmured, the words touched with gentle amusement.

When he set her down beside the firepit, she remained where she was for a moment, watching him straighten and begin gathering branches with that same purposeful ease he seemed to bring to everything. The sunset caught along his shoulders while the last light lingered over the beach, and for a few quiet seconds, she simply appreciated the sight of him.

At the mention of the cloak, her gaze dropped to the fabric still around her shoulders before lifting again.

"We could," she said thoughtfully, "though I am fairly certain there are chairs on the ship we could bring out."

A small pause followed, then the faintest smile curved at her lips.

"Aren't there?"

She drew the cloak a little closer around herself against the cooling air, then tilted her head toward him with quiet mischief beginning to surface.

"Unless this is part of your wilderness aesthetic, and I am expected to dine dramatically beside the flames while seated on borrowed fabric."

The dry warmth in her tone made it clear she would tolerate either option, though teasing him had become far easier than it once was.

Then, softer now, with affection left wholly unhidden:

"Though if you wished to keep me close, you could simply say so."

A small laugh of amusement left him after she had spoken, his eyes finding hers with a hint of mischief as well. He had seen several holodramas that would somewhat depict a similar scene that was unfolding before him, then his answer came.

“Well, we do have chairs, but they aren't the most comfortable in the galaxy. In fact they are quite horrible. Barely able to hold the average sized person.”

A horrible little excuse for him to sit with her on the sand and hold her close.

“Besides, I know I can keep you warmer than that cloak will.”

At her suggestion to just tell her he wanted to stay close, a soft smile tugged his lips before he knelt down in front of the pit, placing sticks in a specific pyramid shape and slightly elevated from the ground.

“I always want to keep you close, if I can be honest.”

His voice was soft and quiet, though it carried to her effortlessly.

He finished setting up the sticks then slowly lowered his fingers to the bottom, a snap of his fingers generated sparks that instantly lit the base of the sticks. A small flame started. Calm, slow and elegant. Nothing like his rampaging flames would do. This was something controlled and contained. Something that reflected how he felt at the current moment.

“Obviously that can't always be the case, but I will never deny being close with you. Especially in our private moments.”

He watched the flames slowly lick up the sticks then started to add some slightly bigger ones to build the fire up.

After he had placed the sticks where he wanted he stood up and walked back around stopping just behind her. He lowered himself facing her back, sitting down gently wrapping his arms around her waist.

“But a more direct answer to your question.”

He whispered in her ear.

“I would love it, if we remained close tonight.”

Seren watched him build the fire with the same attentive calm she seemed to bring to everything, her glowing amber eyes following the careful placement of each stick, the measured spark, the restrained rise of flame. There was something quietly revealing in the contrast, the man capable of violence and force choosing gentleness, choosing control.

It did not escape her.

When he spoke of wanting to keep her close, the warmth that touched her expression returned without resistance. By now, it seemed less like an exception and more like something he had simply drawn out of her.

She settled the cloak across the sand without ceremony, smoothing part of it beside her before sitting with composed grace near the growing fire. The gesture itself was answer enough, but when he came behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, she leaned back into him as naturally as though she had always belonged there.

One of her hands came to rest over his forearm, fingers lightly tracing the line of it before stilling. "Then I believe we have solved the matter of seating," she murmured, dry warmth threaded through the softness of her tone.

Her head turned slightly, enough that her temple brushed near his. "Your argument was transparent," she added. "The chairs were never truly under consideration." There was no reproach in it, only affection.

She looked out toward the fire as it strengthened, then back to the horizon where the last of the light was surrendering to evening.

"As for your request…" brief pause followed, her fingers tightening faintly over his arm. "I acquiesce." The formal word was delivered with deliberate composure, then softened by the small smile that followed.

"Though in truth, I had already decided to remain here." She settled more comfortably against him, allowing her weight to rest there without hesitation. "So yes," she said quietly, "we may sit on the cloak, remain close, and pretend this was your victory."

A small chuckle escaped him.

“In truth, the chairs are practically decoration at this point. I need to replace them.”

The feeling of her touch on his arm caused a small shiver up his back. His head gently rested on hers as she spoke to him.

A small smirk appeared on his lips.

“I think this is as much your victory as it is mine.”

A warm smile as he looked at her, then a small frown.

“This is a problem.”

He paused for a moment.

“I just got comfortable and I still have to cook.”

A small sigh left him as he watched the flames.

“Though, I am sure we have some time before the coals are ready to enjoy the company.”

Seren remained settled against him, her posture relaxing with a rare, quiet ease that would have seemed entirely uncharacteristic to anyone who did not know her well. Her hand rested lightly over his arm, a steady anchor as the fire before them continued to build in soft, rhythmic breaths. At his complaint, the faintest hint of amusement returned to her expression, her tone carrying a dry yet unmistakable warmth.

"A difficult predicament," she murmured softly, her voice trailing over the space between them. "Choosing between comfort and responsibility is rarely a simple task."

Her gaze lingered on the dancing flames for a moment longer before lifting as though she were considering something far beyond the immediate glow of the hearth. There was a subtle shift in her demeanor. It was not a withdrawal into distance, but a move toward something more deliberate and grounded.

"We will have to remedy that, then," she said, her voice quiet but ringing with a sudden, gentle certainty. She allowed a brief pause to follow, letting the weight of the silence settle between them before she added, "We shall find chairs that are proper for a king."

The title was given without hesitation or performative drama; she spoke the words as if they were a simple, undeniable observation rather than a grand revelation. It was only after the statement hung in the air that her gaze flicked toward him, searching his face to measure the effect of her words. She didn't offer a retreat or a correction, allowing the gravity of the acknowledgment to stand. Instead, a faint softening reached the edges of her expression, her eyes warming as she watched him.

"…It seems only appropriate," she added, her voice dropping to a low, tender murmur.

The word rolled off her tongue and put into the closest space between them.

King

It echoed in his head. The sound of it caused his his breath to hold and his chest to tighten slightly.

All this time he had been working to retake his Father's throne, but hearing the title firsthand, it was surprising.

His fingers lightly trailed over her hand and he finally took a small breath. A tremor within his lungs could be heard very faintly if one were close enough to hear it, Seren would.

It took him a moment to snap out of his stupor, but when he did he gave her a soft smile and gently kissed her head. When he spoke, it was almost like a hushed whisper. His vocal chords refusing to work as the phrase came out.

“What is a King without his Queen?”

A deep breath finally escaped him when she looked at him. Their eyes locked on one another's. So many times he had looked into her gaze, and every time he would be stunned with her beauty.

“Do you know what the phrase Ki Hadzuska W'ana means?”

He waited for a moment for her to answer, waiting with patience.

Seren felt the shift in him the moment the word left her lips, a reaction so subtle it might have escaped anyone else, but to her, it was as resonant as a bell in the stillness. She felt the sudden catch in his breath and the faint, almost imperceptible tremor that followed, mirrored by the way his fingers began to trace the back of her hand with a newfound, aching care. Rather than pulling away, she leaned into the contact, her own hand settling more deliberately beneath his to act as a steadying anchor for the vulnerability she sensed rising within him.

When he finally spoke, answering her with that quiet, unexpected turn of phrase, a rare and genuine softness touched her features, melting the usual sharp edges of her composure.

"…Then I suppose a king would remain incomplete," she murmured, her voice a gentle silk that carried the weight of a promise, "until the moment he finally chose wisely."

There was no mockery in her tone and no defensive deflection to guard her own heart; there was only a quiet, profound acknowledgment of the space they now shared. As he posed his question, her gaze held his with an intensity that made the rest of the room fall away, yet she did not answer him immediately. Instead, her glowing amber eyes searched the landscape of his face, looking past the syllables of the language to the man himself, weighing the reverence and the history carried in the phrase he had spoken until it felt like a physical presence between them.

Only when the silence had reached its fullest point did she finally speak.

"…It is High Sith," she said softly, the recognition bringing a flicker of light to her eyes. "I recognize the cadence of the old tongue, the way the weight of it anchors the air."

A brief, reflective pause followed as she allowed the admission to sit between them without a shred of embarrassment.

"But I do not know the literal translation," she confessed, her fingers tightening slightly around his in a gesture of shared trust. "I only understand enough to know that it mattered deeply to you. The true meaning is… evident, I think, even without a map for the words. It is written in the way you speak it."

She did not blink, remaining entirely present and unflinching as she maintained their connection, her thumb brushing slowly over the pulse point of his wrist.

"But I would hear the truth of it from you," she added, her voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur that invited him to share the burden of the memory. "Tell me what it means to your heart, not just history."

Her hand settled more beneath his, giving him some foundation to hold onto. His fingers gently wrapped around hers while he listened to her speak.

“Wisdom comes to a King after experience.”

His gaze remained locked to hers as the firelight danced over her face.

“I don't know if I am worthy of such a title yet, but regardless of if that is the case, that is the title I have.”

He still had so much to learn about being a King, but something within him, a gut instinct, would tell him what he was supposed to do. Ruling was in his blood.

When she noted it was High Sith that he spoke he gave her a slow nod. The feeling of her touch over his wrist eased him further as she spoke.

“My Shadow Star.”

His voice matched her volume, sharing the quiet intimate moment.

“My people would use the stars to guide them at night during expeditions, keeping them from getting lost.”

He shifted his body just a bit as he spoke, looking up at the stars.

“Since the first moment I had met you, you have been a guiding light while I was stuck in a forest.”

He looked at her, searching her face as he shared its meaning.

“There are times when the branches are too thick to look into the sky, but when it clears, I see that star guiding me, pointing me into the direction of someone I should be.”

His voice fell silent for a moment as his hand gently grazed her cheek.

“For that, I am eternally grateful.”

The fire beside them continued its soft light as soft popping sounds from burning wood sounded off into the night, the waves cascading along the shoreline following its own language as the sound of the planet seemed to ease him into the moment even further.

Seren did not interrupt him, nor did she look away while he spoke, her glowing amber eyes holding his with a depth of attention that went beyond simply listening, as though she were absorbing not only the meaning of his words but the sincerity behind them. The firelight moved across her features, softening the sharper edges of her usual composure into something far more open, far more present in the moment they were sharing.

When he finished, she remained quiet for a breath longer, not because she lacked a response, but because she understood the weight of what he had given her and chose not to rush past it.

Her hand lifted slowly, settling over his, resting near her cheek, keeping it there with a quiet steadiness that grounded both of them.

"…Then I will take care not to lead you astray," she said softly, her voice carrying warmth without losing its measured clarity. "Guidance implies trust, and trust is not something I accept lightly, nor something I would ever treat carelessly."

Her gaze did not waver as she spoke, nor did she retreat from the meaning of her own words.

"If I am to be your star, then I will not simply point toward what is easy or what is desired," she continued, her tone steady, thoughtful, "but toward what is right, even when that path is less certain."

Her thumb brushed lightly across his hand, a small gesture that carried more reassurance than emphasis.

"That is the only kind of guidance that holds value."

She shifted closer, closing the last of the space between them until her forehead rested briefly against his, the contact quiet and unforced, her presence no longer held at a distance.

"As for worth, titles are not proven in stillness or inherited expectation," she said more quietly now, her voice lowering into something more intimate, "they are proven through the choices made when it would be easier to do otherwise."

When she drew back just enough to meet his eyes again, there was a softness there that had not been present before.

"From what I have seen, you are already walking that path, whether you fully recognize it yet or not."

Her hand remained in his, her grip gentle but certain.

"And if there are moments when you lose sight of it, when the way forward feels uncertain or obscured," she added, her voice quiet but unwavering, "then I will be there when the sky clears, not as something distant, but as someone who has chosen to stand beside you."

The faintest trace of warmth returned to her expression, not fleeting this time, but settled.

"You will not have to find your way alone."

Her hand gently laid over his while it rested on her cheek, his eyes closing for a moment as he took a deep breath, as if trying to release tension held within his very bones. A tension he had always held within himself after growing in independence, now letting go in an open acceptance for her guidance.

“That kind of trust, is the most dangerous kind.”

His voice was but just a whisper as he spoke, his thumb gently rubbing on her cheek bone. When she rested her forehead on his he opened himself up to the affection and intimacy that ran through his vulnerability.

“You have not led me astray yet, lovely.”

His voice grew silent, as if caught in his throat, as she spoke of his path into a title he was learning to be worthy of, though he still had so much further to go, it was a breath of relief to see someone notice the effort he had been putting in, and even help him maintain his steady course.

His gaze locked with hers after she had finished speaking, bringing forth into existence that she would remain at his side, even show him the way even after the skies cleared. His hand trembled beneath hers, not from fear or nervousness, but from a relief that seemed to unbind weight within his body he had not noticed he kept.

He drew closer to her, as his voice came to her in an intimate whisper.

“My guiding light…”

His lips gently touched hers, remaining there for but a moment before he released, letting out a few breaths, going back in for a deeper kiss with a renewed hunger.

As he did he would slowly lean her back, tipping her head back as he trailed down her neck.

Seren did not resist when he drew her closer, her body yielding to his with a quiet certainty that came not from impulse, but from trust. Her hand remained over his, steadying the faint tremor there, while the other rose to rest at the side of his neck, fingers threading lightly into his hair as she held him near.

When he whispered to her, something in her expression softened further, her glowing amber eyes half-lidded as she took in the closeness, the weight of the moment, the way he seemed to settle into her rather than simply reach for her.

"…And you are no longer lost," she murmured softly in return, her voice warm and unguarded, meant only for him.

She met his kiss without hesitation, the touch gentle at first, then deepening with a quiet, answering intensity that matched his own without overwhelming it. There was nothing rushed in her response, only a steady presence, a willingness to meet him where he was rather than be carried by the moment entirely.

As he leaned her back, her hand slid from his to rest against his chest again, feeling the rhythm there, grounding herself even as she allowed the closeness to deepen. A soft breath escaped her as his lips brushed along her neck, her fingers tightening slightly against him, not in protest, but in acknowledgment of the closeness they had allowed.

"Varin…"

His name came quietly, not as a warning, but as something more intimate, a reminder of presence, of awareness, of choice.

Her hand lifted again, gently guiding his face back toward hers, not pulling away, but drawing the moment back to something they both shared equally. Her gaze met his, steady and open, the warmth there unmistakable.

"Stay with me," she said softly.

Then she kissed him again, slower this time, deliberate and close, her touch lingering as though she intended to keep him anchored there with her rather than let the moment slip too far beyond what they had chosen together.

Varin felt her touch, heard her voice. Then when their eyes met everything around them seemed to cease. The fire light only highlighting the curves and edges of her body, the warmth casting itself over them. Everything else, the waves, the soft breeze, even the night sky, became nothing more than an afterthought.

When she guided his attention back to her, he did not fight. He maintained his focus on her and only her. She only gave him one request. A request he would always follow for her.

He met her kiss with the same pace and passion that she offered, his hand resting on the back of her neck allowing his thumb to gently massage where her shoulder met with her neck.

When they pulled away a soft breath left him as he closed his eyes. Speaking through his breathing his voice came to her in but a whisper.

“Of course I will.”

A small smile lifted the corners of his mouth, then his hand gently took hers, another soft press of his lips over her hand gifted from him to her in their moment. When the moon showed through the clouds it shun its light over her face, highlighting the gold in her gaze as the firelight seemed to highlight the warm brown within his eye.

“I’m not going anywhere…”

His voice paused before he spoke his next words. The weight of what he was about to say dawning on him, not a hesitance, but a recognition of an oath he planned to swear.

“...I promise…”

Seren did not look away as he spoke, her glowing amber eyes holding his with a quiet, unwavering steadiness as though she were weighing not just the words he offered, but the intention behind them, the quiet gravity of a promise he clearly did not give lightly. The firelight and moonlight softened her expression, but they did not diminish the clarity within it, nor the calm certainty that had begun to replace her earlier restraint.

When his lips brushed over her hand again, her fingers closed gently around his in return, not to stop him, but to answer the gesture with the same deliberate care he had shown her, her touch grounding rather than fleeting.

"…Then I will believe you," she said softly, her voice carrying no hesitation, only a quiet acceptance that settled between them with surprising ease.

Her hand lifted slowly, turning just enough for her fingers to trace along his jaw, following the line of it with a familiarity that had come far more quickly than she would have once allowed, before her palm came to rest against his cheek. She leaned closer as she did so, not with urgency, but with a calm certainty that matched the promise he had just given.

"And I will hold you to it," she added, her tone warm, touched with the faintest hint of dry softness that belonged only to him, the words carrying no challenge, only a promise in return.

Her thumb brushed lightly across his cheek before she closed the remaining distance between them, her lips meeting his again in a kiss that was slower now, softer, but no less certain, lingering not out of urgency but out of presence, as though she were choosing to remain within the moment rather than be carried forward by it.

When she drew back, it was only enough to rest her forehead against his once more, her breath steady as it mingled with his, her voice lowering into something quieter, more intimate, meant only for him to hear.

"You do not need to promise me forever tonight," she murmured gently, the words grounded in a quiet wisdom rather than restraint, "it is enough that you are here, and that you choose to stay."

Her hand remained at his cheek, her touch steady, warm, and entirely present as her gaze met his again.

"…I am here as well, and I am not going anywhere."

He tilted his head downward as her hand placed over his cheek. A quiet slow breath leaving him before she spoke, there was a small shiver to it that seemed to catch the tail end of the exhale.

Then his eyes opened to meet hers. The glowing amber within her eyes that reflected the very being that he was to her. There was a comfort in it. A soothing warmth within his chest that he actually belonged somewhere, a puzzle piece that seemed to slot in perfectly.

A soft smile curved his lips after she spoke, holding him to a promise he did not offer often, an oath that he swore to keep and that she swore to always remember.

His lips met hers, soft, slow and gentle. One that held the warmth and closeness that they shared together during their stay on the coast. When they parted he rested his forehead to hers as well, his breathing slow and deep. Listening as she told him he did not need to promise forever, not tonight. His hand gently picked up, cupping over hers that rested on his cheek.

“There’s nowhere I would rather be, than right here with you.”

His voice was softer than usual. A tone that threaded his words together in a way that seemed to not only be a voice of emotion, but one of sincerity. His eyes closed once more as he held her close, the waves pushing against the shore in their own dance as the breeze breathed around them.

The sound of a soft clunk within the firepit drew his attention as the fire had finally set to hotter coals.

“I believe it is time for responsibility.”

He spoke with a small smile before gently kissing her head and slowly he stood up, grabbing the small ice box where the fillets waited to be cooked. He pulled out a small heavy metal plate, placing it elevated over the coals, waiting for it to heat up.

“As much as I would like to avoid the responsible thing to.”

A small chuckle left him before he looked up at the stars above them. A beautiful night.

Seren did not move when he spoke, not at first, as though she were allowing the words to settle fully rather than letting them pass too quickly into the night. Her hand remained over his, her thumb brushing lightly against his skin in a quiet, absent motion that spoke more of presence than intention.

His answer did not surprise her.

But it did reach her.

There was a subtle shift in her expression, something softer than before, something that did not try to hide behind composure this time. She leaned into him just slightly as he held her, accepting the closeness without reservation, the steady rhythm of his breathing grounding her in a way that felt… unexpectedly natural.

"…Then I am glad you chose to be here," she said quietly, her voice low and warm, carrying a sincerity that needed no embellishment.

For a moment longer, she allowed herself to remain there, the sound of the waves and the faint crackle of the fire blending into something almost distant, as though the world beyond them had softened at the edges. When he shifted, when the quiet clunk of the fire drew his attention, and he spoke of responsibility, she did not resist the change.

Instead, she followed it.

Her hand lingered against his for a moment longer before slipping free as he stood, her gaze lifting to track his movement as he moved toward the fire. She adjusted slightly on the cloak, drawing it closer around her shoulders as she settled where he had left her, still within the warmth of both the fire and his presence.

"Responsibility does have unfortunate timing," she observed, the faintest trace of dry humor returning to her tone as she watched him set the plate over the coals.

Her eyes lifted briefly to the stars he had looked toward, then returned to him, steady and thoughtful.

"Though I suspect you would be less satisfied if you ignored it entirely," she continued, her voice calm, her gaze lingering on him rather than the fire.

She drew one knee slightly closer, resting her arm lightly against it, posture relaxed in a way that had become more natural around him.

"…And I would prefer not to lose dinner after everything we have already invested in it," she added, the warmth in her tone unmistakable now.

A small pause followed as the fire crackled between them.

"So I will remain exactly where you left me," she said softly, a faint, almost playful warmth touching the words, "and ensure you do not abandon your responsibilities entirely."

Her gaze held his.

"…Even if I suspect you would prefer to."

Her comment on responsibilities unfortunately timing drew a small quiet laugh from him, he could tell when the pan was read, laying the slabs of meat onto the heated surface.

The loud hiss of cooking meat filled the air before he lifted the plate just a bit to keep it from cooking too fast.

“I don't think you are wrong about that.”

He smirked.

“I am a pretty food driven person.”

He gently flipped the fillets to the other side as she spoke, his posture also taking a more relaxed position as he knelt on one knee keeping an eye on the food that cooked.

“We both almost drowned getting this. We'll, one of us us almost drowned and you beared the process.”

His gaze flicked over to her, the soft light from the fire pit had dulled down a bit more, but he could still see her clearly through the light of the moon and the soft dim orange glow.

“Well, that is a double edged sword. On one side I am quite enjoying the view before me, and on the other, the view is very tempting to just make this quicker.”

A flick of his wrist on the pan caused the meat to shift a bit so he could get a better look at it, making sure it did not burn.

“Though, I am sure that if I give you a subpar dinner after such an eventful trip, you would have me trophies over a fireplace, or maybe a rug.”

Seren watched him as he cooked, her glowing amber eyes following the practiced ease of his movements while the scent of the meat and the sound of the fire settled warmly into the evening around them. There was something quietly mesmerizing about it, not simply the act itself, but the calm focus he gave to even small things, the same care he seemed to carry into everything that mattered to him.

At his comment about being food-driven, the faintest smile returned to her lips.

"I had noticed," she replied softly, the dry warmth in her voice made gentler by affection rather than teasing alone.

Her gaze lingered on him as he spoke of the water, of nearly drowning, and the absurdity of the effort they had gone through simply to secure dinner. The memory might have sounded dramatic if recounted by someone else, but here, beneath the stars with the aftermath reduced to warmth and firelight, it instead felt strangely precious.

"For the record," she said calmly, though the warmth in her eyes deepened, "I believe you handled drowning remarkably well for someone who only recently learned which direction was up."

The humor lingered gently between them before softening again as he looked toward her.

She understood what he meant before he even finished saying it.

The way his attention rested on her now no longer made her self-conscious; instead, it settled over her with a quiet intimacy she had stopped trying to resist hours ago. She drew the cloak a little closer around herself against the cool night air, though her gaze never left him.

"Then I suppose it is fortunate you possess at least some discipline," she murmured, her tone low and smooth. "Otherwise we might never actually eat."

The fire crackled softly between them as she tilted her head slightly, studying him with that same open fondness that had become increasingly impossible for her to hide.

"Though I should clarify something," she continued, the faintest smile touching her lips again. "If this meal turns out poorly, I would not turn you into a rug."

A brief pause followed. "That would seem unnecessarily cruel after all the effort you put into catching it."

The amusement in her eyes sharpened slightly then, subtle but unmistakable. "At worst, I would simply remind you of it repeatedly for the remainder of your life."

Then, softer now, her voice carrying something far warmer beneath the humor: "But I do not think you need to worry. I suspect anything shared like this would taste good to me tonight."
